Pedal Power Mulcher

My family team created a pedal powered mulcher for the Innovate or Die contest.
The bicycle cranks are connected to a cutting drum that cuts, grinds, and feeds the material in. In the back is a, free-wheeling, cutting drum provides the opposing cutting edge.
Its purpose: To turn yard waste into mulch for landscaping and reduce the size of organic materials to speed up the process of composting.
The Consumers Guide to Effective Environmental Choices by The Union of Concerned Scientists lists 7 High-Impact Activities to avoid due to their "especially high environmental impact".
Powerboats
Pesticides and Fertilizers
Gasoline-powered yard equipment
Fireplaces and wood stoves
Recreational off-road driving
Hazardous cleaners and paints
Products made from endangered or threatened species

15 years later and this is still the only thing on yt like it. As others have stated it does need to be upgraded in a few areas but over all a great idea. I want a bigger one to make mulch with for a chicken coop. One issue you solved was making it manual yet a one man operation cause if a hand crank design you'd need a person feeding the machine while another turned it. I want one that can eat like a 2in wide oak branch that's dried. Then we can talk 😂

Seems like a great first step! I'd love to see larger capacity (bigger blades and hole), chain drive with derailleur for variable speed/torque, and a flywheel to supplement cutting force. Maybe also a hopper and a higher drop, to increase capacity. Then you'd have a seriously marketable product. Wish I could do it: but I'm a writer, not an engineer.

Bloody brilliant people. Absolutely brilliant. I’m gonna try and make one. Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the great work. Legends!

This is great. Thank you very much for this. I don't like that the people are saying, do this do that, you should make it bigger. I admire that you started this. I'm going to make one myself. Thank you!

You need to make and market this sucker ASAP! imagine using gears for larger applications too! This is exciting!

This could be useful to break up small twigs as you show but also to break up old food eg. carrots potatoes for composting. But would require a better stand, hopper, larger capacity and gearing. Would definitely buy one then.

I love it! It seems like it could be easily adapted to work on a standard bike and then a switch added so you can go from pedaling the bike to pedaling the mulcher. That would be great for my area where I'm thinking about starting a business gathering other people's leaves and then composting them.

Congratulations. Fantastic idea. Would you upload a video with the actual parts before assembly?

Suggestions: (1) a flywheel, (2) a free-wheel sprocket.

Great idea. I would add a large fly wheel to increase the crunch power, improve on the feeder shoot and over all cleaning accessibility of the design. Than test it on sunflower, kale and tomato stalks etc. in other words the nasty stuff. I run a small family garden and would buy a working pedal chipper in an instant.

Is there something similar available in the market now?

That thing is direct-drive and geared too low to really chop up the big stuff...you need to incorporate the deraillier and bike chain too! Then you'd have a range of gears, and variable chopping power to service that guy in Riverside.

Where do you purchase the gears shown in the pedal powered shredder?

You really need to patent this! I love it! I would buy one if you would sell it! Or if you could sell the instructions on how to make one! Helping the environment, good for my garden, good for burning calories....I want one!!!! Please!

Good luck. Come on over to my house (Riverside, CA) and use that puny contraption. You better have something that cuts 4 inch and larger branches and a lot of them. Lance Armstrong would quickly tire after using your pedal powered mulcher.

Looks cool! I'd like to see one of these in a slightly bigger form, since i just compost them if they're as small as the ones you're using. At what diameter do the branches start to make the chipper seize up?

Numerous users have said they want to make one, or would buy one. Have you released the CAD model and designs yet? If not, why? Makes no sense given what you stated at the start of the video.

How'd you make the chipper blade? Do you have instructions? My wife'd love this but neither of us can weld.

Use a flywheel as htzland said, and dslunsfor1's problem about how big it can do, will be partially answered. Also, please make these plans public, I know where the great benefit of this will come. Rural biogas maceration for increased yields of domestic natural gas fuel.

all you need is 100,000 people doing it under one roof at the same time for 8 hours and you get a bag of mulch per minute
@nikolaiv1138

@Nick Name Exactly. For the average gardener, this would save the need for gas chippers, which would require maintenance and fuel, as well as electric chippers, which would eventually end up in a landfill. Additionally, this chipper is portable, lightweight, looks durable, and, as mentioned in the video, can be recycled. Absolutely awesome!

lol um, only problem i see here is that you can't really do any real yard work with this.. i mean, ok i can put one or two little tiny branches into a small hole and get a tiny pile of scraps... and on a larger scale, all your "efficiency" goes away because you'd have to convert your pedaling through gear boxes so you can actually turn the larger blades to chop bigger things, thus lowering the actual speed of the blades, and thus its effectiveness diminishes.
