Howdy folks! Uncle Mason here! This episode covers my best practices on building a comprehensive MIDI programmable rig in a small form factor. This rig is built around the Boss ES-5 switching system, with all the Overdrive, Distortion, and Compressor in the ES-5 Loops, and the MIDI Pedals (Strymon), out of the loops but controlled via the MIDI output on the ES-5. This maximizes the loops, spacing, and overall weight (24 lbs, 8 oz. total). and size (12" x 28"). Please ask questions and check out my favorite switchers listed above in the description box! XOXO ~Rig Doc

@user-wc1iq5xs9t 5 лет назад
Awesome breakdown of the build. Looks so clean, and space-efficient. Pardon my ignorance, but in using the midi output to control the strymons without having them in the loops, do you lose any options in terms of functionality? I imagine you can't change the order of the midi-controlled pedals then, in regards to each other or the rest of the board. What if you wanted to put a midi-controlled pedal at the start of the chain, and one at the end? You'd have to put at least one in a loop, right?
@justinoneil6971

Morgan Mandorla I’m building a rig very similar to this but with Source Audio pedals. I have the same question as I would like to put the modulation pedal before the drives (ES-5) sometimes, but after most of the time. Is there a way to use a 2 in/2 out switch to change the routing with a couple of foot presses? Seems like there would be a way to rig 4 jacks and a couple switches to make this work 3PDT maybe.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 лет назад
Morgan Mandorla correct you can’t change order of the effects, but you can wire the The Mobius in its pre-post mode and be able to switch it via MIDI so long as the connecting input and output cables for the audio are wired accordingly to the diagram provided by Strymon. However in this application, using those modulation effects before distortion wasn’t preferential. To be clear where are you in put the midi connection, has no bearing on where it would sit in the signal path, it is completely a relevant. The only thing that media is controlling are the program signals that are being sent to the Strymon pedals from the ES5 or whatever controller you choose. Using the three-way splitter that I wired up does not impact the functionality whatsoever, in fact it is preferential when you’re using dissimilar brands of midi devices, often when you wire midi devices in series that are from different brands they will not always send the midi messages to the following pedals and you end up with misfires. Beyond that, wiring the cable as a three-way splitter prevents you from needing any sort of midi splitter box, and moreover decreases the total number of midi connections needed to pass the signal from one pedal to the last, notice there’s only one connection per Strymon pedal, instead of two. The midi output from the boss switcher only needs to go into the input of each pedal. The midi out is only a pass through for most of these applications.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 лет назад
Justin O'Neil I don’t know if source audio has a similar internal matrix that allows for the effect to be pre or post. The Strymon FX do. This makes it much easier to achieve this goal without having to occupy loops in the switcher. If you don’t have this function in your device you’ll have to put it into one of the loops in order to have the functionality you require.

I’d be using al 5 loops in the ES-5 with my analog pedals and would want all of the Boss pedals to be controlled by the midi section of the ES-5... what with the wiring connection look like for me to control all of the midi Boss pedals with the midi on the ES-5?

The MIDI splitter cable works a treat with the es5, I’ve set up my rig with 3 way splitter cable, 2 connected to nova drive and collider and 3rd one returned back into es5 allowing me to use to groups in the es5 for different functions with an external boss fs7 . Cntr1 button to go group up and ctrl2 for bank function in first group, also if I group up to call up midi presets etc with the onboard buttons on the es5 (normal function disabled and instead set up for pmidi funtion) then hit ctrl1 it goes back to original preset. I’f I hit ctrl1 followed by ctrl2 it brings it up another group and same if I hit ctrl2 again it brings it up another group! Then here is where the MIDI return cable to es5 comes in, within any of the groups behond group 2 by pressing ctrl1 it sends midi from es5 back into itself calling up the original preset via pmidi ! Sounds a bit crazy but allows a tonne load of functionality etc calling up various midi presets etc.

Hi doc mason! really love the video 👍Btw i was wondering, if the es5 controls all the strymon bridges through midi, so would that mean that there’re none of those strymons need to connect as loops on es5? If so, can you please tell me how you set anthony’s pedal order, from guitar to all the pedals to the amp? Thanks so much, looking forward for your helpful reply 🙌🏻

Mason, thank you for the intelligent tutorials they are most helpful. Question: Has anyone approached you with a board update including the new Electroharmonics Super Switcher? Do you have any first hand knowledge of this new device? Other than some minor differences, it seems to me it will do most everything the RJM Mastermind PBC will do? As far as midi capabilities go primarily. Thanks if you can offer any insight that'd be excellent.

@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 лет назад
Alfredo Salmeron Hey Alfredo! Honestly the cable doesn’t matter, if you wanted to save yourself time and just solder it once, you could buy premade a molded midi cables from Amazon and just cut them to Lankes and then solder than once at the source. You may need to remove the rubber housing on the straight midi connector in order to fit all three cables, but it should totally fit. If you want to do starts fresh, I would just find the smallest diameter mic cable that you can, this will be perfectly fine you’re just matching up the center three pins on all of the connectors across-the-board.

Mason, have you ever dealt with a Saleh Quartz MIDI controller pedal? I'm looking at the newest Quartz V3 and pairing that with a simple loop switcher (like a Quartermaster 6,8 or 10). The Quartz has a lot of nice features in it and it is literally the size of a small pedal. I have Strymon DIG, DECO, Sunset which can TRS into the sides of the Quartz. Curious what your thoughts and/or experience are with it? Thanks in advance

Hi Uncle Doctor Mason. I run an ES8, Timeline and Bigsky and make extensive use of Nixie and the ES8 editor on my computers. I'm not seeing a way with your midi splitter cable to get the midi chains for these programs. Admittedly at the moment I need swap out midi cables because running the respective programs through the other's pedals doesn't play well (ES8 gives a "MIDI Buffer Full" if Nixie is open and Nixie will allow me to edit, but not write, patches if the chain goes through the ES8). Is there something you can think of to give a set-and-forget midi setup? Also, I like your dog. He (she?) is cute.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 4 года назад
The midi splitter should be easy for you to set up in this application, and will in fact improve any midi issues, or message misfires that could occur. If you need to have a return on the midi you will need to obviously add an additional cable, unless I am misunderstanding your application.

Hi Uncle Mason, instant subscriber! Very good content and tips. I have two questions for you: - if I would chose the position of the strymon's pedals in the chain (for example timeline before overdrive) i should put the Timeline, Mobius and Bigsky separately in the loops of the boss es-5 and also connect them via midi to select the presets? - Could you teach us the steps to build a splitted midi cable? Thanks again, you're awesome!

M4RK THE CUTFIXER see our Instagram profile - we do a short video on that midi cable. Strymon pedals that are time based - delay and reverb - should go after your drives. Mobius I like to use in pre/post mode so you can have effects before or after overdrives.

Thank you and what about interfaces that include 2 amps with both effects loops and midi to control my amps. Again I value your opinion.
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 лет назад
Braxal They are both great! It just depends on how many loops you need. The boss can carry in a loops, two of which are stereo. RJM has seven loops but is quite a bit smaller. Quality wise the RJM is the best. Value wise, the Boss is a great unit for the money.

Great video, as usual. Quick question, why don't you go from one Strymon to another through Midi out of the first and so on ? Is it a problem with that way ? Thank you, Doctor :)
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 лет назад
There’s a section in the video where is briefly explain, but the main reason is that some of the midi pedals are not compatible and do not consistently send the midi message to the subsequent pedals following it. Obviously if you stay within the same brand this is less of an issue, but sometimes when you combine different brands the meeting message can get scrambled. I always found it is a good practice, instead of using a splitter like most people would, is create the splitter directly out of the output cable, it saves you on the total number of connections needed. This way you only have to have a midi connector on the input of each midi device. In this particular circumstance only four midi connectors instead of six.

All that is in the description with links. For the spacers under the handles, they're just aluminum spacers that you can get at Ace or Home Depot or any hardware store. Depending now how long the spacer is, you may need longer screws than what would ordinarily come with your handle. The handles are also just standards wire pulls for cabinets that you can get at most hardware stores in different widths.

The MusicomLab switchers seems to more common in Europe than in the US. I don't know why they're so overlooked since they are comparable to the Boss ES both in terms of price and functions. The MusicomLab is arguably better in certain regards.

Michael Tronson They are great! If you look in my description box I put them as one of my top five switchers. The main difference for me is more dependent on software than anything else. Just a quick observation leading to a question. During the test of the Strymon bridge, It looks as though the output of the Big Sky is using a Neutrik silent plug. The instructions that came with my cable that has one of those is to never use it on anything but the output of a guitar. Is that precaution overblown?
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 лет назад
Joel Pheister hmmm...it should only be used on an output, that’s for certain, otherwise no benefit of the silent component. They may be saying that because on some styles of jack, it may keep the silent mechanism engaged, therefore not passing any signal, but that would just be a single digit percent sort of condition. Or if the plug pulled out of a jack it would go silent where a normal plug might still pass (some) signal. I’ve never had an issue and for testing is great so I don’t have to hear an open connection. I wouldn’t dissuade you from using it on any output.

Thanks for getting back with me Mason. I wanted to know if i understand this correctly...you don’t have to plug the strymons into the loops because you can switch the presets through midi? Are they just put in the signal chain after the boss switcher?
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 5 лет назад
Kyle Benjamin Correct! This is a really easy way to maximize the effectiveness in size of a Pedalboard that includes a looper. Midi can control all of the program and patch changes of the Strymon pedals even though they are not dedicated to any on/off loop in the switcher. This way you can get away with a smaller switcher, and save overall space, and not sacrifice any functionality. I especially like to do this if you want to switch all of your modulation, delay, and reverb FX between the effects loop in the front of the amp. Typically if you’ve wired the pedals in series in a loop or you can’t very easily achieve the four cable method without sacrificing a loop.

@travlehman
@travlehman 5 лет назад
This means the audio is always going through the Strymons, but they are only turned on when MIDI turns them on. With a non-midi pedal, the only way to "remote control" it is to remove it from the signal path when you want it turned off but MIDI pedals can be toggled on and off by the switcher on a preset basis.

Those are in line after the ES-5 switcher. Basically midi pedals can exist I outside the loops because the midi can change the pedal presets and doesn’t need to be hardwired into a loop like and analog distortion would need to. Hey Mason, I'm considering purchasing a boss RV-500 reverb and DD-500 delay oppose to the strymon equivalents; however, my only concern is that it says that they are "9v AC and takes PSA adapters only." Is this true? I'm also gonna route my ODs, Boost, and my compressor to a Boss ES-5 and that says it take AC as well? The DD-500 draws 250 mA and the RV-500 draws 225 mA. I am planning on getting the Truetone 1 spot pro cs12 to power all my pedals. Do you thing I would be ok to make an exception and daisy chain the two boss pedals together to the 9V AC 800 mA plug on the 1 Spot CS12? I saw one of your recent videos on the "Working Man's Guitar Rig" and you plugged a Boss dd-7 strait into a 9v DC and it worked fine. So I was wondering if I can use those for AC power? (I have 2 overdrives, a compressor, and a boost that are all analog that I'm gonna run into the ES-5 like I said earlier. I'm wanting to run the DD-500, RV-500, Earthquaker Afterneath which is 9v DC as a second Reverb, and a Walrus Julia Chorus which is also 9v DC) Just want some of the confusion cleared up so I can get the pedals and add them to my rig. For the love of god do NOT, DO NOT, try to run your Boss stuff on AC power. They all run on DC power, it actually says so above the power jacks on the 500-series pedals. I don't know why Boss ever mentions AC power in their manuals, it's PSA adapter that runs on AC not the pedal itself.
@VertexEffectsInc

Adam, you can run these off of any standard 9VDC power supply that provides 280mA or more. I think the ES-5 is around 250mA when I checked and the ES-8 around 300mA. I've powered these off of all of my approved power supplies, i.e. Truetone, Strymon, etc. with zero issue.

The GigRig system is modular and therefore very adaptable to your power needs. If you have a small pedal setup, just buy the necessary modules and you're good to go. If you move to a bigger/more complicated pedalboard, expand the GigRig system along with it. People argue that this system is expensive but that's not always the case. When planning my board, I considered going for two Strymon Zuma since just one wasn't sufficient. This would have been more expensive and much heavier and space consuming than the GigRig that I ultimately settled on. I had to buy a few additional modules for pedals like the Timeline, but one could argue that if I went with another power supply, I still wouldn't have had all the outputs that I needed (4 pedals running on 18v, one on 12v, one with an "odd" polarity etc). In terms of the power itself, the Generator delivers this in spades but it's not like it does anything spectacular to it, more than if you went with another high quality power supply. It's clean and isolated.
