In this video, Bradford and Brian discuss the resurgence of pedals and pedalboards (at least in the Praise and Worship space that we engage in the most).
Were pedals ever really out? What caused people to move to all-in-one modeling units, and what is causing people to come back to pedalboards?
Table of contents:
00:00 - Welcome
00:16 - When did digital solutions really start to take over amps?
02:35 - The market seemed to move to amp-less solutions (specifically all-in-one)
03:31 - Helix allowed people to build complex signal paths (and moved people away from pedals)l
06:10 - Many very capable all-in-one units have come on to the market
07:06 - 'Amp in a box' pedals are encouraging people to go back to pedalboards
09:52 - UA Amp pedals
13:06 - We are seeing more and more people building
13:26 - People have so many options now
13:44 - TONEX ONE!
16:11 - Pedal builders are putting new tech into old school pedals
18:41 - Pedals are getting more complex (and sounding better)
20:50 - Do real pedals REALLY sound better than digital emulations?
21:17 - The main thing is to play the gear that inspires you and makes you happy
21:55 - What's missing from pedals?
25:15 - Conclusion

Earlier this year, I acquired a QC and gave away my pedals to my other guitar player in our Worship group. I also sold some of them. I don't see myself going back to pedals anytime soon. QC is absolutely amazing for what it does. It's everything I've always wanted as a live and recording guitar player.

This video is so relatable. I was tired of the inconsistencies of my tube amp and never being able to turn up my amp as loud as it needed to get the tubes all warmed up and saturated. Switched to the Helix almost when it first came out and then got the Kemper and honestly my tones sounded better than they ever did through a tube amp. Largely in part because of being able to buy some of y'alls early presets for each units! Appreciate all you two do!

I didn’t realize pedals ever left…. But they have gotten too expensive. You can buy a Helix for the price of 3-4 pedals. Just not feasible anymore if you wanna get the boutique stuff.

Completely agree, and great video fellas! One topic that I think was missed, is the recent surge in content on how to put together pedalboards. For me personally, years ago, I would study Brian Onillions Instagram posts and early videos, and that gave me the confidence and resources I needed to build my own pedalboard. More recently, there’s been a lot more of that content available, and I am still learning tons from people like Grant at Goodwood. Plus, the availability of supplies, boards, connectors, cable, etc is making board builds (both simple and complex) more doable for the masses. It’s gonna be fun seeing where things go next, and I agree, this is one of the best times ever to be a guitarist.

I started playing electric guitar in church when I was 15 (now 26) Was a tube amp snob for awhile and the iridium was my gateway drug into giving modeling a chance haha. I use a ToneX at the end of my spaceship rig. I’ve never been happier with the tone, consistency and inspiration it gives me. It’s seriously the best time be a guitarist 🎉

Very much the same story for me too! I started playing at my church when I was 15, but I’m turning 38! I strayed initially with modelling using Boss GT-6 and that was pretty cool, but then went with tube amps for many years - swore off modelling. Simplifier actually was my ‘gateway drug’ for an amp-less rig, was impressed but not in love… BUT, ToneX came around and that has completely changed my perspective. I hate the term ‘game changer’ but for me ToneX has been. It’s just like running my amps live, but better, more consistent, no live issues with mics, valves failing, etc. And the feel and response to pedals is dead on right.

Sold that last year to build my first board and loved the process. I feel like I missed out on the golden amp age because all the older dudes are telling me about playing live with amps but all I know is amp sims. I do however want to own an amp one day. Cheers 🤙🏼

I actually went modeler because I wanted to get out of the pedal game, because it was such a black hole for me after a while. I think at this point, I am so used to the ease of control that modelers give, as well as speedy options, that going back to pedals would be pretty hard and disruptive for me. Just went from helix to fm9 turbo, and Brian, I gotta say, you were totally right about the effects. The reverbs are amazing. (helix is still awesome, I just wanted to change it up after 8 years on the platform).

I guess I moved the other way. I went from the Headrush pedalboard to the Strymon Iridium, to the ACS1, and now I'm using an HX Stomp. It lets me run a much smaller pedalboard. I keep my drive pedals in front of the HX Stomp, which handles my modulation, amps, cabs, and acts as a MIDI controller for my time-based effects that I have in the effects loop, so I still get my dialed in delays and reverbs. I think right now is a sweet spot of mixing pedals and amp simulators. They play so well together at this point.

I've gone from an HX Stomp based board, to an Iridium based board, and finally a Tonex based board. Every time I would go back to hear my old school analog pedalboard rig, the tones were so much better to my ears. The Tonex tones especially would just disappear in a live mix. They sounded great alone, but had no punch. I have gone back to my analog drive pedals (Tumnus>JHS Morning Glory and a EQD Plumes>Revv G3) all in front of an IR loader with Ownhammer IRs, and I'm getting some of the best tones I've ever had! If it ain't broke...

Went from Helix LT to a Quad Cortex last year, with that decided to go hybrid and put some specific pedal I really like in the effects loops to put in the chain if I want it. Recently built a pedalboard for church playing. Been using the kemper primarily. I’ve noticed a sound difference between using the kemper’s fx vs. real pedals. I do love the convenience of what the kemper provides, but at the same time, there’s nothing like having individual pedals that I know I like and am used to playing on. Literally feel like I get more presence from the pedals.

I've been playing in church since 1968. Of course, for a long time it was only acoustic. Electric guitar started in the mid-90s and then it was guitar to a couple pedals to a solid state amp. I like lesser expensive pedals and SS amps. I've never touched the expensive Helix, Strymon, etc. But someday I might need to cross over to the dark side and replace my amps with amp(s) in a pedal(s). (I really like dry/wet. I say it that way because the dry amp is straight in.)

Most people seem to think "what all-in-one unit would I need to replace my pedalboard" but I flip the question and ask "what pedalboard would I need to replace my ~$400 Pod Go". And the answer is, at minimum: at least 4 different effects, some amp+cab sim (tonex one could work well), some eqs and wah/volume, but most importantly a huge midi switcher with loop reordering to glue it all. Plus a beefy power supply and few dozens of cables. There is no way in world that $400 could buy half of this. It's a matter of cost and convenience.

It's so tough, because MAN I love pedals, everything about them. The tactile nature of them, the knobs, the artwork, you name it. But I'm an all-in-one Quad Cortex user these days and have been for about 3 years, and the flexibility it provides is just so hard to replicate with pedals - particularly when it comes to signal routing. I'm someone who prefers wet effects AFTER the amp, and that's just harder to pull off with a pedals rig. Mainly just being able to quickly move a delay before or after the amp. If I'm going for the galloping U2 thing, it's nice to run the delay in front of the amp for that. Otherwise, I want delays after the amp. With the QC, I can just do that on the fly. With a pedalboard... I can't exactly bend down and move my delay pedal on my board before and after the amp sim in between songs lol. Because digital solutions have gotten so good, the sonic choice is made irrelevant - a Quad Cortex Z Wreck capture sounds pretty much identical to a mic'd Z Wreck (minus the air being moved). So it's not a matter of sound at that point, it's a matter of ergonomics. And for that... it's just hard to beat something like a Quad Cortex.

If most are thinking running 2 ToneX One for stereo here, it's quite a bit more expensive than getting a Boss IR-2 or a used Walrus ACS1. Also, cable jacks are on the side so while 1 unit is compact, 2 units will definitely be larger than the 2 ToneX One pedals (if portability is what one is looking for). I get it ToneX is has captures (amps and pedals) with a world of possibility from what is loaded online, while the other ones are models and IR and more limited to the manufacturer, but if your goal is having stereo amps in a box for portability and you use less than a couple amp models, I think those are still great options that is not obsolete. Also, I'm thinking instead of releasing a new ToneX Dual for 2 amps in the future, perhaps they're just going to update the large ToneX to accommodate to happen? We'll have to wait and see!

I use to have a pedal board for acoustic and a separate backup pedal board. And the same for my electric setup but I had dual amps for both. I eventually settled on 2 blues jr(Humboldt editions) and my back-up rig had 2 pro jr. In total the cheapest rig was the acoustic back up which was about $750 in pedals and Di. The main one was about 2k. My main pedal board for electric had just over $7K worth of pedals and the price of both blues jr brought the rig to about $8.5k and that was before things like patch cables and power supply, the pedalboard itself which brought everything up significantly. I was getting married and needed money so I sold everything but my blues jr and main electric board. I got almost $10K from selling everything else on Reverb and Craigslist. I used the money to buy a helix and the rest on my deposit for an apartment and furniture, and of course the wedding. Now I had more random gear. A peavey bass amp, a supro Neptune, a bad cat cougar, fishman acoustic amp, and a pair of EV evolve 15s. I eventually sold all of it and now have a single Michael Landau Deville for the occasional moment I get to use my amp on stage. A full analog board with a Hx effects. And the helix. The helix is my midi controller for tracks, my acoustic rig, bass rig, electric rig, and occasional keyboard rig. Yes I run reverbs and delays on my keyboard sound. The helix basically replaced 4 rigs and added versatility for when I MD worship services. For even the new price of just under $2K it is harder to sound better and even harder to get this much power. Even all the new stuff the Quad cortex, the fractal, the keeper, the fender tone pro… all of them are compared first to the helix and then everything else. So I think it’s funny how everyone else will claim to the best but still be compared to the helix. Do the do something’s better for sure. Is the form factor better on some absolutely. But the helix floor is a great all in one unit that can also double as the heart of a bigger pedalboard(if you need more) It’s the best acoustic rig of all if you asked me. My only wish is that the created a helix core. Essentially the power of the full size helix in a slightly smaller package where it has the same amount of switch’s or at least 8 like the HX effects but no expression pedal, that would be perfection.

I love pedals! But I am fully digital since more than 9 years now, currently running the FM9. The problem with pedals is like you said: they are expensive. A full blown pedal board + midi switcher running into a ToneX is like 2x the price of the FM9. Does it sound better? Maybe. But what I found, it is easy to become addicted to buying pedals. Basically every month some sick boutique brand is releasing the newest stuff and you WANT it. That is the main reason why I went full digital. One exception for me is Fuzz! A good fuzz sound is only possible with an analog pedal everything else can be digital. Besides that, I think from time to time if it was the right decision but then I remember that I have basically everything I could wish in the FM9.

The thing new pedals and modelers need is a DIGITAL interface!, 20 years ago there were many units that came with SPDIF connector so no A/D/A conversions needed between them, nowadays no single pedal have this important interface that could reduce latency and improve signal integrity, when you run any modeler and 5 pedals (typical pedalboard) you're doing over 12 A/D/A conversions before the signal gets to FOH or your monitor amp, that adds a LOT of latency and signal degradation, I wish all manufacturers incorporate back a digital IN/OUT protocol so the only 2 A/D conversions needed would be between the guitar and pedals and from pedals into amp, actually with a DANTE connector you could go straight to FOH without an analog conversion after the pedals

You mention strapping an 1176 to your board. Where would you think it belongs in the signal chain? Guitarists usually throw pedal style compression at the beginning of the chain, but sound engineers would throw it last as they are working with already recorded guitar sounds.
@worshiptutorials
@worshiptutorials 3 месяца назад
First. Unless you can fork out for two of them to go stereo compression at the end. 😎 Using compression at the end of the chain requires you to approach it differently as well.

I gave up the fight, in your words, with a BOSS ME-80. It was fine enough. Once I got a Helix in 2020, though, I think I was converted forever. Glitz was life-changing. Also, I'm moving mostly full time to acoustic guitar at church and what I'm finding is there is almost NO discussion about gear like this in the acoustic realm, for obvious reasons. I'm keeping my Helix relevant by using your acoustic patch for Helix and adding an IR. I might have to find something else to blow--err, invest--money on. LOLOLOL

With upgraded IRs (for the ones that allow it), all of these amp in a box pedals sound equally as good as a mic’d amp. Personally, I think they all sound better than the helix stuff. Im tempted by the tonex one because for the price of my iridium and a cheap pedal I don’t need, I could do the “real” two amp sound.

Do you have a Tonex pedal pack with just pedals?
@Blandified

At this point in time, does it still make sense to get a Fractal FM9 if I’m chasing raw amp tones and big CCM/P&W tones? Sounds like Tonex is the ultimate end goal

I have a Boss GX100. It is absolutely phenomenal. Especially for $600. You would spend $2000 in individual pedals to do what it does.

Me too. I really like it. Ive got 2 banks (8 total presets) ranging from clean and ambient to overdriven lead and rhythm stuff. Recently got a tube amp and have been having fun with that. I still use the gx100 in the fx loop for my wet fx like reverb and delays. With compression and OD pedals up front it sounds GREAT
@ogmakefirefiregood
@ogmakefirefiregood 2 месяца назад
@elliotmcconnell5449 I copy the same preset across an entire bank. That way, there is no gap when I change between programs. Then each one has a different gain stage or several effects activated. It's kind of like scenes on a Helix or QC.

@elliotmcconnell5449 I'm with you there, I have an Eventide H90 I'm going to incorporate into my rig. Mostly for the reverbs. That will free up some dsp. So... time for new patches!

I love pedals, always have. I need more tones than one single amp can usually provide. I might be able to get by with a 4 channel amp, but that's pricey. I'm hoping Line 6 releases something like the HX One but with only the amps. People are loving the Tonex One, but I prefer amp models over profiles.

I got rid of a lot of totally great old school pedals in the late 80s. For a roland gp 16 rack mount, which is a great unit. It still works. In the last 6 years i have gone back to buying pedals. There are a lot of good ones out there and a lot of junk out there. Oh but i wish i had those vintage pedals i Got rid of

What everyone gave up was the search for tone. No Helix for me. It is simply an old outdated system. I use a Mesa Mark V into the sound system with a very small pedal board. Analogman King of tone, with a cloudburst plus Keeley Halo. The Kiss principle. Always keep it simple if you want to enjoy playing. What happened to liking the sound of a guitar?
@iburley_

Honestly as somebody who up until this point has only owned a small practice combo amp and has only used built in overdrive and reverb, I am unbelievably confused on where exactly I should go from here. I tried putting together a wish list for a pedal board using one of the "amp in a box" pedals and even keeping it pretty simple (board, power, tuner, three drives, amp in a box, reverb) and it came out to almost exactly the price of a quad cortex. Makes it slightly difficult as somebody who owns none of it and is starting at zero to go for the more complex solution rather than the all-in-one.

Get an all in one and learn it really well. You'll find what you like and then you can get the analog equivalent. The hx stomp would be a great place to get started.

I would’ve stayed with the helix, but I got hit with the need for a repair and just to get it looked at was about $100. I couldn’t bypass anything on the unit because the whole unit was affected. So that sour me on the all in one, even though it was my favorite set up. So I chose to go back to pedals and use a single emulator for my amp and so that I wouldn’t have to run into a prohibitively expensive repair again.
