I used HEAVY distortion on a mandolin through a Marshall with quad box. It sounded awesome - demonic and angelic at the same time. The high harmonics just seemed to ring through on top of all the fuzz.
Never You Mind is a spellbindingly beautiful track, well done Single Kid Lisa. EDIT: Also, that Water From The Sky improv was ace too - The Morning Glory Meteorologists nailed it!
Best end to a video ever!!!!! All of JHS videos have been so well done, but this was special and I so appreciated this as the gift it was. Thank you both!
I would love to see a 'just try stuff' episode where you guys create something like this with just budget/affordable pedals (which is totally doable, Behringer Reverb Machine, Joyo Vision, EHX Satisfaction fuzz, NU>X CORE series, TCE Nether etc etc)
It probably would not sound much less in terms of quality. With Budget pedals, you’re getting a close enough if not identical sound from the pedals they’re cloning, but the compromise for price is the component quality. They are more likely to die on you at an inconvenient time if you use them to gig.
Pedals on acoustic is soo underrated. This was amazing!! More acoustic in the future. Rocking with electric is great, and tons of fun. But it’s nice to switch the vibe up sometimes
i come back to video often. Its my favorite vid this channel has put out and thats saying something. Ive played acoustic for 20 years and have just gotten into electric over the last two. this is a staunch reminder that acoustic is always first in my heart
Remember when we used to spend countless hours in the studio just to produce something that sounded ALMOST as good as this track? It's AMAZING how sound technology has advanced.
It was the comment, "'Should I go to a minor now?" that got me. That was worth the watch...but it was topped by, "Water from the sky..." I never knew what rain was until then. I never knew what sadness was until the minor was played. Well played.
Really really really nice tune, very inspiring! The distorted guitar sounded like horns, it had a GodspeedYou!BlackEmperor cosmic noise vibe, but more positive
Fantastic! I've only used delay, reverb, tremolo, and chorus on acoustic before. You folks have shown there is a whole world left to explore. The song and your production are killer! Thanks.
I play lots of solo acoustic shows (well, a lot to ME anyway, could always be more) and I use lots of FX and a looper to try and set myself apart from all the other dudes out there doing the solo acoustic thing. The Duellist actually works super well for distortion and overdrive on acoustic.
Boy am I glad that you made this video. 20 minutes ago I thought that the bass guitar counted as an electric guitar and I had no idea what rain was. Thanks JHS!!
I compared 5 brands, 18 guitars, 3 shops......Bought a Taylor 414ce-R (cost a fortune) Plays & Sounds like a Dream. Enjoyed this guys. oNe LoVe from NYC
Wow. Just wow. You guys are just so gifted… Sign me up to the Single Kid Lisa fanclub! But for the love of god, *watch out* for all these guitars falling out of the sky in KC! We can’t afford to lose the creative force- NICK LOUX MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS!
I use the Color Box v2 with my Taylor 314 as a preamp. I removed the expression pickup system in the guitar because it died and replaced it with K&K piezo pickups, the Color Box v2 works really well with the piezo pickups. The great thing about the Color Box v2 is that it can serve as a mic pre and as a fuzz box.
My last show i didn't have my electric so I had to use my acoustic electric. It was wild especially with the big muff. It actually handled really well.
The bass immediately made my brain hear an early 90's Billy Corgan dropping some lush vocals over this.. Great track.. Aside from a great track, the two of your sensibilities are fantastically chemistry-laden. Kudos fellas, beautiful track.
Great episode boys! Yep primarily I’m a guitarist and for so long usually have started most songs when writing or recording with the guitar being the first instrument I start the writing process on, but recently I’ve pushed myself to start a song process either with a keys/synth part sometimes now I’ll start with Drum grooves/patterns and percussion and build from that an see what develops and comes out, it’s been great and I’ve written various new songs in various genres and feel and is great being creative from different angles and using guitar pedals on vocals, drums, synths and creating what you want instead of what a piece of gear is specifically designed to be used with, if something got an Input and an Output then there’s no reason you can’t really put anything into the signal process and just change the normality up and break any rules, there are no rules really so just do as you feel, nothing really is wrong!! It’s just people usually or expect many things to be used in certain or specific ways cos it’s what they’re used to!! F*** all that be creative and do whatever you want, the results can be fantastic and teach yourself so many new things along the way giving you so much more experiences and knowledge using things in different ways! Great show and great idea format! Love it as always!! Thanks Steve in Manchester, England.
It’s always great to go outside the box or your comfort zone and try something different. That’s when you write your best stuff. You guys created a gorgeous song and I’d buy an album of this in a heartbeat. Shameless plug: I decided to do something just like this on my last album called Acoustic Spaces. Except, I took one acoustic with many guitar sounds (an Acoustasonic) and used various pedals to create an all acoustic album of mellow folkish soundscapes. Not so shameless plug: every penny that comes from my music goes to my nephews college savings accounts.
"anything in the room? wait! is this legal?" my brain wanting to re-write your scripts. not that was needed because i still want every piece of gear in this episode and then BOOM! this epic ending! 😂
I´ve used same outboard gear for about 14years. I´ll replace when they break. JOBS A GOOD UN FISHMAN PRO II Preamp + 1987 BOSS CH2B (25€ in a junk shop) + GE7 EQ. I added a TC BODYREZ a couple years ago. No idea what that does but it sounds great. My workhorse is a 300€ Gretch Rancher Jnr with added Fishman Matrix piezo.
As always, JHS took things way farther (further?) than I usually do. Thanks for making me want to be more adventurous! I love using light overdrive to spice up the thin, dry sound of DI acoustic guitar. And you can't go wrong with a little (or a lot) of compression.
I use a TC Electronic Bodyres, that one knob really sweetens the tone on any acoustic (adjust to tase) and the Clover *Shameless plug* is my “DI box” since it’s got the XLR out. Sometime’s I’ll run a Catalinbread Echorec too, just to give more spatiality to it.
Okay, maybe I'm a little off topic, but I urgently need a rundown of that drum setup! The sound is just AWESOME!... don't know if it's the drum heads or whatever... just great sound! btw... nice jam at the end channeling Travis Meeks.
No reason why not! I use compressor > Zoom G3 multiFX > chorus > analog delay > tape delay > reverb on my gig pedalboard, and my Martin (usually) sounds pretty decent!
SINGLE KID LISA! So good, they're kidding around in the presentation but it's a really nice tune. Great approach and wonderfully executed! Too talented.
Not an effect pedal per se, but I will say the Radial Tonebone PZ-Pre Acoustic Preamp is an amazing pedal. Gives you lots of options for using effects loops, etc... Sounds good as the only thing between a piezo or mic'd guitar and a PA or FRFR.
I would be curious to see some kind of a breakdown of JHS' influence on the marketplace & the sales of particular pedals they feature. For example: I needed to go out and get a 'silver horse' & 'golden horse' (I needed both to be sure) KLON clone after the video where the 'golden horse' was mistaken for (and sonically super similar) to the original KLON. Not hating btw, you beautiful jerks have turned me into a tone junkie and I am enjoying it. Thanks for the passion and the flutter I get in my heart whenever I see the BILT guitar. Its gorgeous.
I remember putting an acoustic with a Dean Markley soundhole pickup through 70s Big Muff Pi and Memory Man many years ago, but haven’t done that since. I gotta update my acoustic pedalboard now.
For my 12 and 6 string acoustics I only use 1 pedal a mini sonic stomp into a small mixer then that goes into the P A. The P A has basic reverb, chorus,, and echo effects built in which I add very little. Also all my guitars are through 1 of my AKG wireless bug systems. I tried just a cable once and found I needed way more volume and did not get as natural of a sound. I guess the bug system boosts the sound to where don't need as much volume on the guitar which keeps the electric tone down. Accidentally discover but sure helps the sound considering I use guitars that didn't cost over $150. El cheapo. Amazing sound out of these acoustic/ electrics. I'm trying to sound as acoustic as possible.
Such a missed opportunity by Taylor not sending you guys a GS Mini bass. I did a cover of Please Do Not Go by The Violent Femmes on my page with it and it sounds huge, especially considering how tiny it is. I brought it down to SXSW this year and we jammed it in the van, super compact, killer sound.
