I hope that changes. Sounds like a prison sentence for all those who really aren't happy in their marriage and even suffering greatly. I'm not saying the U.S. has it all figured out in the happiness arena - clearly not. But step one needs to be freedom to move out of a marriage without being judged harshly for it. It sounds like the ability to survive without a husband may be difficult and more of an obstacle too.

He didn't forget, of course 🙄. He answered according to the common meaning of the term, meaning that people usually refer to a woman. It's also possible to interpret the question "been married" as if the marriage has to be over.
