This is very helpful. I just have a question. My toddler just learned to say milk so he wants milk all the time. He's eating his meals well. But on some days it well exceeds 24 oz. Is that okay. How can I limit his milk intake
Full time daddy here with a question , my boy just turned 1 and is currently on formula still but will be weaning very soon… my question is how much solids should I be giving him for each meal on top of the milk? Like let’s say he gets 4/5 oz of milk for breakfast, then gets his actual breakfast about an hour later, how nuch food is to much or to little ?
Hi I hope you got your questions answered I am in the same situation. But what I do is fix him finger food and let him pick through what he wants to eat sometimes he don’t eat much so I give him pea protein toddler formula to make sure he’s getting his nutrients
They usually let u know when they had enough food or u start to see there belly poking lol As long as there getting a balanced meal it’s usually pretty simple
Give as much as they want to eat . Never force. If they start refusing, take a pause n offer. Do this for 3-4 times if they still refuse u know they r done
Ripple for kids has 8 grams protein, 8 grams of fat, and 8 grams of carbs. For those parents looking for another plant based alternative. Appreciate all the info.
Helpful, thank you. I did not realize that I needed to transition my daughter to milk at all. It helps a lot to hear you say it may not be necessary if she is getting enough from food.
I absolutely love and recommend pea milk. My 2 toddlers loved it. I use one formulated for kids wich has DHA in it. I find it both at my local Target and Wholefoods. It's Ripple kids milk
Hi, My daughter is 11 months now. Am thinking to add cow milk in her diet morning around 50ml (to make her taste) and am gonna continue exclusive breastfeeding til I can. Let me know whether this decision is good or not. Thanks in advance
Some people don't! Some people decide to continue to breastfeed or offer plant-based alternatives. It's a personal choice, but cow's milk is a great source of fat/protein/calcium for toddlers.
You mentioned if toddler is eating a well balanced diet to not force the milk . My 1 year is barely starting to take to purees and doesn't take to table foods . What is the recommendation then for how much cow's milk / toddler formula ?
Great question! Focus on meals and still offer the milk. Remember, you can't force it down but simply offer on a schedule and they decide if and how much. Of course, for any other nutritional advice, speak to Peds as they may guide you based on baby's weight
Ripple Kids Pea Milk has both 8g of protein as well as fat so it’s a great alternative to full fat cows milk. I believe it’s a Canadian brand but it’s readily available in the US! We get it from target :)
Thank you doctor Mona honestly those powdered milk is really not good like Similac it has so much garbage in it I rather plant based I can make them myself fresh and I rather give my son real cocoa powder
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
My problem is my baby doesnt like to eat that much and ive been scared to take her formula away considering she might not get enough nutrients. Tried giving her milk cold turkey and she threw it up twice
But mixing formula with cows milk will not cause any allergies and any digestion issue, and will child be able to develop taste for cow milk by mixing because it will be then different taste🤔
@@shipralpriyank2608 I’m not sure about this because my daughter drank breast milk not formula so I mixed breast milk with cow milk. She is now 3 and has no allergies, had no digestive issues during the transition or after, and loves cow milk still. So that’s as best as I can answer your question from my experience.
I mentioned in the episode, but no. BF is perfectly fine and cow's milk or plant based alternative would be if you 1. weaned of BM or 2. wanted to start incorporating it out of choice. Otherwise, can BF as long as you want and introduce other sources of calcium like cheese and yogurt
All because we named nut milks “milk” doesn’t mean they can replace the nutritional value of “real milks”. Nothing in nature milks nuts to sustain a baby except hippy parents. If you want a nice strong healthy baby use human, cow or goat milk.
Hey! I just found your channel. I find this information so import to know specially us mothers. I enjoy the way you get the message out and the topics you cover. Thank youuu! XoXo
We drink 1% at my house because whole milk and 2% kind of upset my stomach. Is it not ok to start my 1 year old on 1%? Or do i need to buy whole milk and try that first? Thank you!
Thank you for this. I’m gonna talk to our pediatrician, but I didn’t feel comfortable transitioning to whole cows milks. This gives me additional options to discuss at our next appointment.
Hi. This was very helpful and detailed video. I relieved to hear that its okay if DS doesnt drink milk at all. I am from Canada. Could you tell me which brands have whole milk because I only found 3.25% milk here. Please reply. Thank you.
My son 13 months old not ready to leave his formula he doesn’t like whole milk i am keep trying and he throw up what should i do how can i mix whole milk with powder formula ? Please help
I feel so emotional about weening my toddler (13 months) off breast milk because of the attachment, and secondly... I was vegan for 7 years. I don't restrict food or drink for my son he eats everything, and I eat eggs and plant-based drinks. I am nervous 😓
This is bad advice. If youre going to make the switch to milk from breqst feeding. Do not go to pasteurized milk. Its just as bad as formula for babies. Raw milk at a slow pace is the most nutritional food for babies besides red meat you can give to your baby. My son started at 6 months with raw milk. 8 months with red meat. Never had an issue. Healthy as can be. He ate raw milk ice cream with raw yolk eggs, which 100 x better than any baby food. The only fruits he ate were bananas and watermelon. No formula crap. Nothing pasteurized. Do your research. There are a lot of great recipes. Don't listen to govt doctors that want to keep us sick.
Formula does not harm babies and is a great option for many. Raw or unpasteurized milk (or raw eggs) can contain bacteria, parasites and viruses and is NOT a safe option for babies. I agree it's important to do your own research and clear things with a trusted healthcare professional however most of what you recommended is not evidenced based.
@@pedsdoctalktv9960 Of course its evidence based you choose not to pay attention. If youre indicating there is no evidence that raw milk is a super food for humans at any age than you are giving misinformation. Either you choose not to do the correct research or you are paid by big corporations to keep people sick. There are tons of research on how seed oils in baby formula can cause health issues. Heating milk kills good bacteria with enzymes that is excellent for the gut. People that have lactose issues and get stomach pain is because the milk is heated. Govt keeps sending out the message of bad bacteria and scaring everyone. You really need to do better research. Good luck!
My daughter is 12 months. She has been on breastmilk since she was born. Now I wanted to wean her and give her formula which I tried and she doesn't want to take it. She eats yoghurt. I will try her on cow's milk. Thanks Doc. Atleast now I understand that milk is a just supplement especially if baby is eating well and that I don't have to force the milk...
Hi , my baby is 18 months old but she Dont like to drink whole milk at all...she breastfeeds only but now i dont have much supply and i want her to drink whole milk ..in early morning when she wakes up she gets hungry and ask for feed but very little milk comes ..don't know what to do
Doctor my child is 6 yrs old but no solid food intake.only he drinks cows milk..i tried everything.but no...it dowsnt work..help me pls.your good advise is highly appreciated.what vitamins do i need to add on his molk specially iron.thank you
Milk can be a meal replacement if you don't care about your health 😂 I use milk to make the hunger pain stop and often avoid eating real food. I don't recommend
Hello doc, great recommendations. Thanks for sharing knowledge. My baby is a year old. He’s always been on formula milk since birth. He always got distracted while drinking milk so we started giving him milk while he asleep. It worked before because he was taking more naps but now he only takes one nap during the day. Now when we try giving him milk while awake he cries and refuses the bottle. He’s not drinking enough milk during the day. We are substituting with milk in cereals or other ways. Do you have any recommendations?
Same happen with me but my bby was just 4 month old that one, i also asked lots of doctor what should i need , but still date I didn't get answer and any substitute ☹️☹️
Hi how can we give plant based milk to my 3 year old we have to add water in it or not and how we can warm the plant based milk .and which one is good soy oat or almond plz let me know Thnx
My 13months is not drinking. Even if its only 125ml or drank but a little and spit. but when i changed formula she drinks 200ml…..so should i do 50 50? Half formula half freshmilk? and how many hours to feed the baby if she drinks milk and eat food?
If your toddler doesn't like whole milk you can mix half formula/half whole milk and slowly increase volume of milk to ease the transition until fully whole milk. And there's no certain amount of time to space milk from meals, ideally you'll transition to a schedule where they drink milk with meals and water in between!
Hi there doc. I watched a bunch of your videos I luv ya. I’ve been doing a splash of unsweetened soy with breast milk to my 11 month old to start slowly transitioning. Just watched a jill castle vid and it scared me cause she was saying that soy can’t compete with the fat level of cows whole milk and the micronutrients like phosphorous etc. My baby is on the slim side so I’m esp sensitive to the fat issue. Looks like this Silk brand soy has about ¾ protein and fat as the whole milk and comparable vit a, d, and calcium. Any thoughts ? We don’t drink cows milk and it does seem unnatural to me it always upset my stomach a little so that’s why I was doing soy. But maybe I should do a little of each ? I appreciate you so much ✌🏼 PS. She eats solids really well and I’m a chef I make all her food she has an amazing diet I promise. Like beats, edamame, sweet potato, Brocolli, fruit, beans, meat, etc. Nothing processed.
Whole milk does have more fat than soy milk but you have to look at the whole picture, if a child has an otherwise healthy diet and is gaining well that slight difference in fat intake likely doesn’t matter! As far as cow milk alternatives soy milk and pea milk are the closest to whole milk. I’d recommend discussing with your child’s clinicians if you have other concerns about their growth or the best choice for them. Best of luck!
You're right, most formula is made of protein in cows milk, whey and casein, and is specially formulated to be safe and healthy for infants. it is often created to be similar to breastmilk in it's nutrient makeup but isn't made up of breastmilk. hope that helps!
Hi doc,my baby is turning 16 Month and I still give her 240ml Toddler formula before her nap and sleep,if she wakes up middle of the night, she will have e a bottle as well,is that okay for a 16 Months old?
Most otherwise healthy babies are ready to drop all middle of the night feeds by this age which can help promote dental health as well. I encourage dropping bottles by 18 months at the latest for the reasons discussed in the video. Best of luck!!
This video covers tips on how to introduce milk around 12 months of age if ready to wean breastfeeding or if formula feeding. This video is helpful if looking for ways to wean from the bottle/introduce a cup. Hope that helps! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5vWfUBKJMpo.html
It’s often easiest to start with a daytime feed. So if you usually breastfeed after lunch, offer milk in a cup with lunch. Give options when you can (which cup do you want to use? Etc) and hold boundaries. If they get frustrated they want to breastfeed remind them of the next time they’ll breastfeed but continue to calmly offer milk. Once they do well with that feed continue with other feeds you want to transition. For some toddlers it take a while to slowly transition them, some catch on more quickly but if you calmly, consistently offer milk they’ll begin to learn the new schedule
Our babe (10mo) has cmpa but lately seems not to react to snacks containing traces of milk. I still have some low aha goat milk formula as well as soy formula (both organic, swiss) I think I'll soon start giving those and see how She does. The pediatrician said Just try in the morning and observe. I like the idea of supplementing One bottle per day for when my milk is low or She Is too tired and didn't eat her meal. She now occasionally has diluted cashews/oat milk, maye 1dl per day. I Just add hot water to the cold beverage before a nap if I have no breatmilk.
This is great! Thank you for explaining it all so well! My 13 month daughter is allergic to dairy and we do soy/oat milk during day and I still nurse her during night. Does the concept of getting nutrition (calcium, protein) from other milk-based products like cheese and yogurt apply to non-dairy as well?
Whole milk is best due to the high fat content for their developing brains. If you were totally out you could give a small amount of 2% in a pinch until able to get whole milk but I wouldn’t recommend that long term
Thank you Dr! My son is 15mts old and I just started the transition. I thought we could go cold turkey but poor baby was frustrated and irritable on the 2nd day so I made him some formula no more than 3x a day (
Glad it's going well! Some babies have no trouble making a quick switch, but some need more of a gradual transition. Glad you found what works well for your little one!
It’s not one of my preferred cow milk alternatives for toddlers due to its overall low amount of calories, fat and protein compared to other options like pea milk
You can keep it in a bottle or if they are already drinking well from a sippy cup, switch to giving milk out of the sippy cup too. Some babies do fine switching from formula to cows milk and bottle to sippy cup at the same time. For others it's more of a gradual transition and they do better making one transition before the other. Either option Is ok!
We tried a 10% whole milk - 90% formula to start weaning our grandson from the formula with no success. He is one year old and we're thinking going cold turkey will be our only option.
My child id almost three and she wants milk during her nap, when she goes to bed at night ad when she wakes up! And I am having a lot of trouble weaning her from her bottle.. it's a comfort thing..what do I do?
I’m so glad you found it helpful! So many parents stress about the change but hopefully the video helps ease any worry and makes it a smooth transition!!
You don’t have to switch exactly at 12 months but I don’t typically recommend continuing formula much past that. But should be fine to finish the formula you have and then switch!
My son is 13m old and he drinks 4-5oz liquid at a time. A friend recommended morning bottle and evening bottle and water at meals and snacks. Hes not really interested in yogurt sometimes cheese. I give 2oz water after each meal and snack time (he sometimes doesnt want snacks) sometimes with some prune Puree. Hes been constipated the last month ½ since fully starting solids and switch to lactose free whole milk. He was on medical dairy broken formula from bad skin and weight issues younger. Since the prune and fiber foods dont help enough hes back on miralax 1/4 cap to 8oz but he only does 4oz at a time so i eyeball 1/8 to 2 waters. Hes been going through the sleep regression as well and maybe now going back to regular 2 naps and night sleep. We offer his cup but he drinks with head down me holding it. Just switched him off a bottle to a sippy cup while hes learning to use a straw to get off sippy when he does. Hes 17lbs and doing weight checks more than usual baby visits. Last two nights he has kinda of barely ate his dinner and expected his milk bottle before bed (i brush and paci for bed not give it to him in crib). Is there a better way to do the milk and is he doing enough or should i change it? Dr said 16oz in 24oz is max so idk if thats what he has to do since aap says on google or if the 10oz is good. He loves bread pancakes and pasta (try to sneak fruits or veggies in it) etc and has been eating more food but still very painful pooping and tummy pain
There is no minimum amount of milk that a toddler HAS to take. It all depends on their overall diet, if they are eating diverse foods with good protein/fat/calcium intake many toddlers don't need to drink milk. I'd discuss with your child's clinician how to manage the constipation. Often children don't eat as well if they're constipated/uncomfortable. Check out this podcast for more info on toddler constipation: pedsdoctalk.com/podcast/how-to-approach-toddler-constipation/ Poor guy! Good luck!!
@pedsdoctalktv9960 thank you, talked with his dr and he's not gaining maybe loosing again so he's on more milk intake and pediasure now and stick with mialax and I do water only at snack time now 6-8oz. It's been 2 days and having weekly or so weight checks now. Thank you for your reply but I'll just stick to his dr recommendations since he's in a unique situation rn lol tha k you!
@@feliciasuris2381 Yes I think that makes total sense. They know your baby best 🙂Feeding challenges can be stressful to navigate but it sounds like you're doing an awesome job seeking out answers from your clinician. I wish you and your child the best ❤
Hi! Can I give my 13 month old oat milk and cows milk as well (oat milk 2x and cow’s milk 1x a day) Or does it have to be one or the other? I feel like it would be easier on her digestive system. Thank you in advance!
