I do not own the copyright this video Pee-Wee Herman Guest Host on Joan Rivers Show (Complete) Guest Stars: Suzanne Somers Frankie Avalon Rae Dawn Chong Howard Hewett
Plus he was an adult themed comic originally, look for the Showtime or HBO live show with Phil Hartman, and also Reubens worked with Cheech and Chong, whose daughter is a guest here also.
Rest in peace, Paul Reubens. Great monologue. When that pizza gets delivered and he starts talking to the delivery guy in gibberish Spanish and then asked Suzanne and Frankie if "they were having some, too?", I fell on the floor laughing.
@Fuck RU-vid it's actually the 35th anniversary of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure though, not the character. Pee-Wee Herman made his debut at Groundlings in 1977 and his first television special was on HBO in 1981. He also had a couple scenes in Cheech and Chong's Next Movie in 1980. Wasn't trying to criticize your comment. Just thought people might be interested to know just how long he's been doing the character.
@Fuck RU-vid lol. Sorry, wasn't trying to trigger you. You assume a lot. You seem to think anyone who gets directed by youtube to a Pee-Wee Herman video knows his whole career. When I found out he first introduced the character in 77 I thought that was kind of interesting and I was just trying to share some knowledge. Perhaps I did come off a little arrogant, but I honestly had the best intentions. Perhaps YOU are the one who needs to get over yourself?
Same. Having MC'ed (for very small audiences!), I'm super-impressed at how he maintains his ridiculous character while actually keeping the show running on time and connecting with the audience.
I just bought the complete series of Pee-Wee's playhouse. I watch it every sunday morning while I eat breakfast just like i used to when I was young and would watch it every saturday morning.... I appreciate it more now than I did when I was young. It always makes me feel better...Just saying, as you were.
Rob R. I love the show too! My favorite show as a kid. When it used to come on I’d jump up and turn the volume all the up, sing every word of the song and do the Pee Wee dance 🤣 One of my fondest memories from childhood. What country do you live in? cause Pee Wee used to come on Saturday mornings in the US. Loving Pee Wee’s Playhouse is universal!!! ❤️
@@rebeccahopkins9522 Yeah I guess it was saturdays. I was kinda guessing since it was so long ago. I loved Pee-wee and Land of the Lost when I was young. I had a crush on the girl on that show. Ah to be young again.
Norm is VERY highly rated in his field by his peers. In fact, he is accepted to be the greatest living comedic mind by a majority of his contemporaries. However! They are both very under appreciated in the mainstream.
Like everyone else said here, I totally appreciate him more now than i did as a kid. I wasn't planning to watch this whole episode, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I wish he had a talk show today.
I remember this from when I was a kid, thanks for posting! I never forgot Pee Wee's joke to Suzanne..."What's your favorite color?...Black and white...Those aren't colors!"
I ate some Skippy peanut butter, and it reminded me of Annette Funicello, and THAT reminded me of "Back to the Beach." SO I started watching it. I called my mom to say, "Hey, ma...! I'm watching Back to the Beach!" and she mentioned the Pee Wee Cameo I had totally forgotten about. Then she told me about this specific video on youtube, so here I am.
Pee wee’s playhouse was everything good about the 80’s and my childhood. I knew the song by heart and when it would come on Saturday mornings I would jump up, turn the sound all the way up, do the Pee Wee dance, and sing every word at the top of my lungs (much to my Dad’s chagrin who was in kitchen drinking his coffee-if you know the song then you understand 🤣). Yes the show was fun and wacky, with lots of kooky characters, but the humor was actually very advanced for a kids show; it didn’t talk down to kids like we were stupid. Filled with double entendres, lessons on how to be a good person, the “inside joke” angle with the secret word, lots of high level thinking, sophisticated humor concepts, and was wholly and completely inventive and original. It was just so great. If you didn’t live in that time and have it as a child, it’s hard to understand just how great it was. But it was Fantastic. Paul Reubens (Pee Wee) started as a stand up comic and his humor came from that perspective even though it was for kids. It still had an intelligence, wit and sarcasm to it that put it shoulders above other kids show and still does. I think that’s why his live Pee Wee shows all sell out and still go over so well with adults, besides the nostalgia aspect. It truly was One of a kind. There Will never be another Paul Reubens or a show like Pee Wee’s Playhouse. I still miss it, some 35 years later. The crap they spoon feed to kids these days can’t even come near it. Long live the king, Mr. Pee Wee Herman 👑
Something I recently learned (2023) was that the person who sang the Pee-Wee's Playhouse theme song was NOT Ellen Shaw, as listed in the credits. She was actually the assistant to the girl who REALLY sang the intro: Cyndi Lauper! Apparently, Cyndi was asked to sing the song, but her manager (or someone who thought he controlled her), didn't want Cyndi to be associated with such a silly song - thought it might hurt her record sales. Well, while that guy was in some meeting in another part of the studio, Cyndi recorded the song anyway. They used Cyndi's recording, but listed Ellen Shaw as the singer in the credits.
@@MENTY-B I know - I was blown away, too! Cyndi even sang an unexpectedly AWESOME, heartfelt rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, in her way, to open a Major League Baseball game in 2011. It's the best version I've ever heard. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_CsDr1E13M0.html
He’s such a great actor, he the show in character. The character we all love. I’m so glad as a person he embraced it. He’s Superman to us. Obviously most importantly hysterical. He is a comedian first.
Also I love how Suzanne laughed the hardest at the Playboy reference. SHE LAUGHED BECAUSE THAT WAS FUNNY!!! 31:38 Paul continuing to remain on top of it IN CHARACTER.
what a comedic genius - and he never never lets up for a SECOND!!! his delivery is absolutely unique as he effortlessly bounces between bits… an absolutely loveable, ageless character - we were so lucky - I think he really did know how much we loved him…
I can't believe I watched the entire thing, well, minus skipping over the singing parts. I never realized how special Paul was and his ability to interact with people as Pee Wee. I love his adult humor mixed in with his normal banter. He was edgy for adults and kid like enough for children to enjoy as well. I think that is where things fell apart for him, you cross the line into children's entertainment and you have to keep your nose clean, look at all the narrators for Thomas the Tank Engine, you can come from being controversial, but once you make the crossover, your personal life can't go back into being called into question. Pee Wee would have shined even more if he would have been a few decades younger and in todays culture, he could have been huge in a more burlesque adult manner, not needing to worry about his personal life and choices being called into question.
Paul clearly knew how whack it was for her to black up. Hopefully it didn't make the cut for her special. I googled Susanne Somers Patti LaBelle blackface and thankfully it turned up nothing.
I like how Paul was showing his fangs just to see who was willing to play ball. Only a couple caught on in the later stages though and realized they missed opportunities to swing the bat.
I watched this when it was on. The next day at school, I asked my friends, "Hey did you watch Joan Rivers last night?" They said, "Yeah, did you see Pee-Wee Herman?" and one kid did the Pee-Wee Herman dance! I loved the film, Back to the Beach, too. The dance was mentioned in the Baha Men song, Move It Like This.
Genius....multi-talented. Not a one trick pony. Here he is performing by-gones. As of now, noone has come close via persona , a la Jerry Lee Lewis. Come back, Paul.
I realize that in the early eighties I worked for a Boston Bank and wore an identical outfit including the two pointed Brest handkerchief....I now wish I had acted in the same way!
Rubens I think could have been a regular host if not had his own talk show - surprisingly good! Just professional enough to get the job done and say all the right things needed (breaking to commercial etc.) but also just childlike enough to offer something fresh to the genre! My guess is if you were to search the alternate universes, Paul Rubens as Pee-wee Herman (or whatever his name would be on that alternate planet or universe) would have had some sort of (quite successful) talk show!
At the 21:00 mark - I keep rewinding it to hear Pee Wee do the babbling when he imitates the Pizza guy! I miss those days when we could do that! Today people would be screaming racist and canceling him because they have no sense of humor.
Lol same for me smoke a bunch of hash Saturday morning , up early clean my house ,finish in time for Pee weeks Playhouse. You could be having the worst week ever but then Pee Wees Playhouse would make you forget all about it.
@@wylier Supposedly, Lauper used the name Ellen Shaw for the show's theme song vocal credit. That's the name that appears in the end credits of the show in the 1980's.
3 Batman references. Paul Reubens played The Penguins father in Batman returns, Michael Keaton (who appeared in a clip) played Batman in the film 2 years later to this and The Batcar on the desk. Wonder if the Batcar on the desk was a sly reference to Keaton becoming Batman 2 years later?
I dont think any casting was done for the Batman movie back in '87. You could see it as a prescient prediction of the future, maybe - and Tim Burton was the director for both "Batman' and "Pee-wees Big Adventure'.
I also saw him in Rodney Dangerfield's " Easy Money " movie . He played a friendly coke stone out guy Rodney & Joe Pesci ran into at a restaurant .He played it so perfect, I know I 've been that guy.
Dwayne_Mitchell thank you for posting all these amazing videos. They bring me much joy and laughter. I grew up watching Pee-Wee's Playhouse as a kid. It's crazy that he started the playhouse before I was even born(not the show).
The whole Halloween show tha night was fantastic. Firstly, Joan Rivers as Guest Host and guests for the whole show feature PeeWeee Herman, Phyiiiis Diller as Dr. Ruth and Elvira, Misstriss of the Dark. What a lineup and what a show.
I’ve been looking for this particular video for a long time. I was watching back in 1987 when it first aired and remember laughing uncontrollably when the PIZZA DELIVERY MAN 20:54 asks for payment and Peewee says, “excuse me?”, and then mimics him.
Great Hosting Job Pee Wee Darling ~ All Stars Are Angels & Go to the Sky One Day ~ Fabulous Group of Entertainers ~ All very Gracious 🙏🎭💐 Hollywood Needs to Name A Star After You Dearest Pee Wee 🤲💋😽🌌⭐
I think 🤔 Pee Wee was Black in his past life He loved R&B music 🎶 and knew so much about the artists I remember him... My older sister used to love this singer Howard Hewitt but I was only about 5 yrs old and she was a pre tween about 11
I love how overtly the b list celebs promoted their forgetible movies/tv shows. But I have to give the guests credit for going on live and the band was tight.
