As "weird" as this movie is, it's as conventional a movie screenplay as you can get. Reubens admits he didnt know how to write a movie.. so he got a book on screenplay writing and followed the outline of the story structure verbatim. As in "on this page, the inciting incident happens... on this page, theres a chase".. etc.

It's even more funny if you grew up in the 1960s, because he really celebrated all the 1960s movie and television cliches. Like that scene in the Hollywood studio where they were making that beach movie with retro 1964 bathing suits, music and dancing -- they made about ten beach movies just like that around 1964 and '65 starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. Likewise with the Godzilla movies. And other cliches, like, "They don't teach you these things in school; these things you just have to learn by experience" (that the Alamo has no basement?) and the Texas battle cry from the Mexican-American War: "Remember the Alamo!" (where Davy Crockett and Frank Bowie made their last stand).

This is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time! So glad to finally see a reaction to this on RU-vid. It’s crazy when you think about the character of Pee-wee being liked by all ages, there’s just something about him that cracks me up. He was a regular guest on Letterman in the 80s and those appearances are hilarious too (also on RU-vid). Cassandra Peterson was a member of the same comedy troupe as Paul Reubens (the Groundlings), where he created this character!

I LOVE Pee Wee's Big Adventure so much! It's one of my ALL-TIME favorites growing up as a toddler. It's also a family favorite. It's one of my Dad's favorites, my mom's seen it plenty of times, I grew up watching the film with my older brother, and my Grandma loves Pee Wee! Here's some really cool fun facts: Paul Reubens (aka Pee Wee Herman) was originally writing a script for Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Except the script didn't focus on a bike. It was going to be a remake of Disney's "POLLYANNA". When he showed up to Warner Bros Studios to continue working on his script, he noticed that most of the staff and crew had a bicycle to help them get around the backlot. When he requested a bike for his own, he decided to change the script and have the bicycle be the main focus for the story. The bike in the movie, by the way, is a 1947 Schwinn racer. :)👍🚲

I think I love this movie more today than I did as a kid. There's just SO MUCH that sticks with you! Yes, there really was a Mr. T cereal back in the day. It was Capn Crunch in the shape of "T's" but you had to be a tough guy like Mr. T to eat it and be able to handle the damage it did cutting up your mouth. When this movie was out, all the kids started calling the song Tequila, "The Pee Wee Herman". Adults would try to correct us.... "That song's been around for a while, it's actually called Tequila." We were always like "Yeah, yeah, we know...but it's the Pee Wee Herman." The actor who played "Agent" P.W. Herman is James Brolin...Josh Brolin's father. And remember... Tell'em Large Marge sent ya!!!

I had the same experience--love it more as an adult. The movie within a movie at the end is hilarious, PeeWee as an actor trying to shuffle into the middle of the frame and the way they dubbed his voice LOL My favorite part might be toward the beginning where he's walking down a dark street in the wrong part of town and hisses at some potential mugger. Comedy gold.

Paul developed the Pee-Wee character as part of the Groundlings comedy troupe which included Phil Hartman. Pee-Wee's playhouse was originally a groundlings stage production called "The Pee-Wee Herman Show," created by Paul and Phil. Phil played the salty Captain Carl. The stage production was decidedly adult theme in nature. You can see it on RU-vid. Even toned-down for children's tv, Pee-Wee's Playhouse still had some of that adolescent humor running through it.

I just want to thank you for reacting to this movie. People seem to always miss reacting to this movie. I was obsessed with Pee Wee Herman as a kid in the 80's as many were. But he was also very hip and adults liked him too. Young people aren't accustomed to these types of comedic stylings. But Tim Burton as a director puts this movie over the top. I knew the first 15 minutes or so you were just going to think it was annoying. But this is actually a great movie and entertains the whole way through. And yes ai would definitely pick up Pee Wee if I drove past him.

Pee Wee Herman started as a parody of Children's TV show hosts from the 50's, most notably Pinkie Lee. It became an L.A. stage show which was more adult than the movies and TV show that followed. He also did stand-up as Pee Wee. He's essentially a cross between a kiddie show host and a hyperactive child.

I think it was just The Pee-Wee Herman Show, featuring Phil Hartman as Captain Carl (It's here on YT). The Pee-Wee's Playhouse is ok as long as you realize it's subverting expectations. The most adult of those is the Pee Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special. Kids can watch it but it's also a bit dark and has the most extra guest stars.
