If you never read the original YGO manga (you should) you wouldn't know about the massively different trajectory for the first villain of the DM anime Playlist - • Yu-Gi-Oh Did you Know?... #Short
I'm stuck between the two honestly. His death was insane and a fitting end for the madman who tried to rip everything away from Kaiba and Yugi, but on the other hand he's so iconic, it's always a huge treat when he shows up again, and it's interesting to see him use his wealth and knowledge for good after seeing all the cruelty he did
One could argue it was that love he had that turned him mad and his death was a mercy in hindsight. That’s not what I’M saying, I actually prefer his fate in the anime. I’m just pointing out a possible argument.
@@metal_gear_rayquaza8914 That was what I was saying but upon rewatching some of his scenes in GX I have changed my mind. Poetic karma be darned he's way too fun of a character
I think it's actually super tragic if he dies, because all he wanted to do was bring his wife back from the grave, but he got overwhelmed with the possibilities of what he could do with his millennium eye, and for driven a little mad with power
Yep. Bakura is kinda alright I guess but he is definitely the weakest antagonist out of most of the original series. Guys like pegasus, Kaiba and Merik are just have so much more Charisma than him. It would suck to have Peagasus wastes by an inferior character.
Funniest thing about Keith dying is that he was brought back in Yugioh R and got clowned on by Jounouchi with Keith playing one of the Wicked Gods and losing because his deck isn't meant to support summoning a Wicked God. That duel is one of the funniest yugioh duels that happens in any yugioh manga imo.
As much as I like the manga for being darker and this is a pretty dark moment, I think I prefer how the anime kept him alive. As creator of duel monsters, the anime team saw he could be a useful character for down the line in the story and in the filler and movie they made good use of him. I don’t like killing off or removing a character when they could still have some value left to the story and I think the manga probably killed him too early.
To be honest Pegasus was absent in the anime, we didn’t see him until Walking the Dragons and even than he had almost no screen time. Yes he had a bigger role in the movie, but counting only the TV show, he was absent from most anime.
@@SmashBros2009 By the time it was out GX was already airing. Plus before Dark Side of Dimensions none of the anime followed the manga's story, so showing Pegasus dead would be confusing, while if he isn't dead Yako's motivation needs to be completely rewritten, which to be fair they've already done with Otogi/Duke. I think it just came out too late to be adapted.
I really want them to go ham and adapt all the mangas because they are destinct enough(Yes, even the original manga. The Duel monsters-anime changed a lot of stuff) and it would just be cool to see. Sadly, the chances of that happening are basically 0.
It would be interesting to see it start from Season 0 too. Duel monsters is a cool and fun game, but it gets dull when that is literally the only thing people do in that universe. Hardly a mention of deciding what cards to side in/out either.
@@alexanderrobins7497 Honestly, I still really wonder how the Toei anime would have progressed if it hadn't been cancelled. Because even tho the broad strokes were the same, almost all of the concrete mainstory-details were either completely made up or altered.(aka. even the DM anime with half of it being filler was more in-bounds in some regards) Heck, I personally often think about what my own spin on the series in a remake would be. It can really be fun to brainstorm.
Fun fact, Pegasus in English makes groaning noises as he's carried down but in Japanese he's dead silent. So I'm sure he was meant to remain dead as he doesn't make another appearance in the show until season 4 as you said.
@@dnmstarsi wish that some english dub uncesored companies like viz media need to take all the rights to yu gi oh and keep it uncesored but some cast of english actors would be from the funimation cast(r.i.p funimation)
@@ninjasolarteam Yeah but then again, I personally appreciate the dumb censorship and I mean the ones that poorly cover up stuff like death so much and badly that it becomes funny. Still prefer the uncut versions but just saying, thanks for everything and nothing, "made kid friendly anime dubs".
I always thought he was just unconscious and the blood came because Bakura removed his eye, and I have the manga. I think having Pegasus alive is a better choice, imo, but hey, at least he can meet his beloved Cecilia in the after life.
@@bigdoubleu117 Not everyone read it because it was always seen as sorta the weird spinoff/filler manga released after the mainmanga. That is also why the localization changes and translation errors are more obscure for it.
I think the anime keeping him alive was what made it more interesting for me. It was always hype when he name drops duel monsters characters in yu gi oh GX
This is one of those moments brought up in just about every explanation on why the manga and anime are different continuities. It’s kind of funny to think about this from a timeline perspective.
Pegasus actually partially redeemed himself in later seasons of the anime. And, even though he was a villain, Pegasus kept his word and freed the 3 souls he captured. He also did actually pay out the $3,000,000 prize he said he would.
I did know about it, but I’ve always rejected that reality. I have always felt keeping him alive did a better job of portraying what Millennium Items do to people who possess them, especially since Atem changes for the better over time it makes it feel like a Bakura thing almost to those who haven’t finished the series. Keeping Pegasus alive and showing who he is without the Item corrupting his brain reminds you of the stakes at play.
@@Ramona122003 , this is true, but Ishizu is a reincarnation of someone who was trained to use a Millennium Item, and even if she wasn't she was still trained to use one in the present day. Marik and Pegasus are two great examples of what grief and trauma can do to someone who comes into contact with an Item, and the many ways it can warp your personality. In the manga, at least, Shadi's ruthlessness is explained. Season 0, which you can actually find here on RU-vid, is actually pretty faithful to the original introduction in the Manga. Much like the Ishtars, Shadi's role is to protect the Millennium Items but also to guide/protect the souls of Pharaohs and to judge the souls of those who wish to disturb them. He's complicated, but it's a lot harder for the audience to gauge the effects of the items from him.
@@DindellaTheDefender Marik's issues started long before he touched Millennium Rod given that he created a split personality year prior. All the rod did was enable him further. Also, Ishizu went through similar BS and still was good with her Millennium Item. Shadi is ruthless, cold, and murders people in the manga (granted the people he did kill were jerks), but he's firmly on the side of good, especially if you considered DSOD. Overall, Pegasus is the only one you can point in being corrupted by a Millennium Item. Which works since the Millennium Eye was corrupted by the Thief King to brainwash Aknadin.
Gotta love the Paradox event in duel links explaining this out. Paradox tries to kill pegasus and he's like "But...I'm already dead." And he goes "excuse me-?" "Well you see you're from the anime, I'm from the manga, this is a different timeline and if you kill me nothing happens well because I've already died". And it just breaks his mind in the most Dr strange multiverse way possible.
Very hard to decide, him dying in such a gruesome way is a devastating, yet fitting end to his character. Given all the chaos he caused in his attempts to gather all the Millenium Items to revive his lost loved one. Not only that, but it adds more evil to Yami Bakura's character, ripping the Millenium Eye from Pegasus' head and killing him. On the other hand, Pegasus is such an incredible character, whenever we see him again, it's always such a joy. I especially loved watching him in GX, as he redeems himself a bit by befriending Jaden and being a positive influence when he makes his rare appearances. He's such a symbolic character for Yugioh, I understand wanting him to live. It's tough, but I'm glad we have an anime alternative where he lived. Let him die in the manga and those who enjoy the gruesomeness of it and read it there, those who want it a little more light hearted can enjoy it in the anime, so in a sense they chose both options.
Sad to say I did know this, but I’m glad that the anime decided that it was better to keep him alive. He was a fun character and it was great to see him return for Yugioh GX
Damn, seeing him being hauled off like that in the anime made it looked like he *was* dead, only when he was referenced early on in S4 was I actually relieved that it was not so (only in the anime)
If I remember correctly, Kazuki kept Pegasus' death in the manga ambiguous for a long time by just not mentioning him. It wasn't until Yu-Gi-Oh! R where not only Pegasus' death was confirmed, but so was Bandit Keith's. By the way... did Bandit Keith stay dead in that? He was revived as a test run for the project meant to revive Pegasus. I just remember that Joey defeated him and destroyed The Wicked Eraser.
In the manga I recall in Battle City when Joey/Jonouchi duelled Espa Roba, Espa mentioned Pegasus being dead and said he could contact him in the afterlife through ESP (which we learn shortly after he doesn’t have ESP). So he was confirmed dead way earlier than Yugioh R
I could go either way on Pegasus being kept alive or not. I think that it could have been sort of interesting for world building if he died and there was an in-universe explanation on KaibaCorp taking over marketing and R&D for Duel Monsters as a bit of trivia for why the game's rules and artistic direction sort of shifted from the early days, but really that would just be a "huh neat" thing and Pegasus has some good appearances in anime-exclusive stuff (mostly just his GX cameo episode).
@@nicolasrey8773 R&D is research and development which while in the context of a card game would normally only deal with things like play testing in the Yugioh world would likely also involve research into the supernatural properties the card game holds or the tech related to the game. KaibaCorp does have a partnership with Industrial Illusions - sending cards into space, for instance, was something that directly happened. Same goes with how KaibaCorp developed the Solid Vision technology and duel disks. On top of KaibaCorp having the rights to use Industrial Illusions' IP in Kaibaland. Also the research on Momentum and subsequent development of D-Wheels. The work on the AR technology to make D-Gazers and Solid Vision with Mass. That sorta thing.
Nope actually zexal is a split path of the timeline that happens if the zero reverse accident never happens apparently in cannon zero reverse is the reason that synchros exzist at all so its more curious how xyz and synchro are side by side in arc v which has been confirmed to be part of the 5ds timeline
Yes. Ikr. I wish the manga got a proper adaptation some day. No censorship[. Stay 100% true to the manga. Yugioh will be a horror anime like it should be. (Or at least a Thriller.)
@@arima9607 "Season zero" as most yugioh anime fans call it is actually the watered down version of the og 1st Yugioh manga that it is based on. Yugioh Duelist, known as Yugioh Duel monsters in the anime, is actually the sequel. That is why I've always wished the manga got a proper adaptation some day.
I like that they kept his character going because he used his wealth and power for good he was the one that actually found which adds to the Shepherd in GX rainbow dragon and made it into a card and sent it to the alternate dimension so Jesse Anderson could use it so they could get home
I knew about the brutal way he lost his Millennium Eye in the Manga compared to the Anime (especially cuz the dub edited it out lmao), but I didn't know he actually died. Guess that expains how Waking The Dragons was an Anime-original work as it featured Pegasus as a decently important character.
Ok I don't get how Pegasus died from getting his millennium eye ripped out, because when he first got it, it was shoved into his eye socket and he survived, so how did getting it ripped out kill him
I knew this fact though I only learned that Pegasus was still alive because of the pyramid of light movie. I only had the first few episodes on VHS and saw parts of the first two seasons including the finale of season one and was never able to catch the series again until GX where I saw a few episodes.
Fun fact - Yugioh Duel links actually makes reference to this fact during the Paradox event where Pegasus told Paradox that he (Pegasus) should be dead, but he’s not. It’s a neat little interaction
@@sean1oo1 it is canon. Its from the original scipts but sadly no time to bring it up in the main manga also the author wasvthe asist of kazuki takahashi
@@sabener6255 that doesn’t make it canon lmao. I get what you’re referring to. But it’s got no actual plot relevance to the manga itself, just ideas takahashi never utilized in the main work. Its very common with mangaka. It’s a spin off. But still a fun read regardless 🤷🏽♂️
@@sean1oo1 If filler arcs are canon to the anime, as confirmed by virtual world in Kaibaland from season 1 of DM being in GX, then the spinoff manga is canon to the manga. Transcend game also isn't relevant to Dark Side of Dimensions, even contradicting it in some ways, but you won't call that noncanon, will you?
@@genyakozlov1316 Most people don't consider filler arcs canon to the anime, so not the best example. At best, it's a different timeline out the manga. And yes, a lot of people don't consider Transcend game canon to DSOD because of the contradicting.
I prefer the Manga version. I feel being killed was a fitting ending for his backstory of being a guy who trapped in the past and wanted to make a hologram copy of his wife. And in the anime he pretty much just got reduced to a shadow of his former self. He went from such a charming character to just a comedic relief or a plot device to create a plot convenient cards like Legend of Heart, Blue Eyes Shining Dragon, and Rainbow Dragon, which can be easily replaced.
Pegasus being alive was def the way to go for future plot. But dayuummm.. I had no idea Pegasus was murdered, and got his millennium eye ripped right out of his skull. That's so metal.
They made a reference to this in duel links during the end of the paradox raid boss event where yugi and atem discussed something happened to pegasus after their duel with him..
Bandit got killed by pegasus and pegasus got killed by yami evil bakura, it was plot all along since yami bakura needed melinium eyes, it must be taken by force to take one of pegasus left eyes
I personally like the theory that the rare hunters for some reason decided to just "silence him" after he ran away. Because he just never shows up again after that point.
@@lpfan4491 Marik may have killed all the rare hunters he controlled. After all in the manga he said Arcana/Pandora was gonna kill himself after he wakes up, and those twists he made Hunter do may have been fatal. That certainly makes his redemption even harder to swallow.
@@genyakozlov1316 I genuinely think the anime did him better, though still not perfect. He still did screwed up stuff, but at least he didn't actively force people to commit yesn't. From the perspective of the manga, I actively would have wanted Yami to just bring Yami Marik to 0 LP right away(Assuming the Shadow game was the same).
I really love the idea of Pegasus coming back in later seasons because after the first season you think that’s all you’re gonna see of him but then later on he pops up out of nowhere kind of gives you a spook of what the fuck? I thought we got rid of you!
Pegasus living and being used in GX was cool. I love how Jaden just pulls out Neos and Pegasus, the creator of the game, isn't even sure if Neos has been released yet. It shows he doesn't dictate the goings on with card releases and so on. It's a small thing but his character being redeemable is better than just having him lose twice and killing him off.
This is news to me and my friend I actually never knew this I talked something dark may have happened to him because the Japanese anime Hugo is darker than the English version and no I did not notice
Oh wait until you here what Pegasus did to Bandit Keith. He embedded a gun into his hand and used his powers to force Keith to shoot. Yeah... should I mention it was originally a horror manga?
True, but then you have to question how getting his millennium eye taken out can kill him, when his actual eye was already taken out by Shadi years beforehand. It creates a bit of a plot hole.
@@michaelfireheart8300 I like to think that was Zorc/Yami Bakura being unnecessarily extra and cruel when he was taking the millennium eye out. It would fit his character to kill someone who's already weak and vulnerable.
I was shocked to have seen his death in the manga when I first read the series back in early 2000s. I like the character and I'm actually cool with him having a better outcome in the anime. I've read that his fate has changed cause fans loved him which was awesome!
They actually addressed this in Duel Links when the character Paradox shows up in Duel Links it is revealed that his plan in the Yugioh movie Bonds Beyond Time where he planned to kill Pegasus (anime version) since he assumed if he killed him that Duel Monsters would fail and it would prevent the 5Ds events from occurring. However it was confirmed that the Duel Links characters of the original DM show are actually the manga versions and Pegasus already knows his fate that he is supposed to die basically telling Paradox his life long plan to end Duel Monsters wouldn't have worked anyways.
I love Yu-Gi-Oh so much for the fact that none of it's characters have died throughout the whole series. That makes the show so much more suitable for kids, unlike todays animes. I think we, late 90s - early 00s babies, are so blessed to have grown up watching shows like Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon and Shaman King.
I did NOT know that! Keeping him alive was a much better choice. You can’t have the Duel Monsters without their creator. Plus he is a very useful and iconic character for the series.
I knew about the difference and honestly, while I enjoy his character, Pegasus J. Crafword dying due to Yami Bakura does set him up as a better villain for later
He is actually a good character to have around and besides, if he wasn’t around we may or may not have seen him use more toon monsters like toon dark magician girl.
I much prefer keeping Pegasus around, he was a good character. That being said, his death is the only way for Yu-Gi-Oh! R to happen, and as much as I want an anime adaption for it, I don’t know how it could work.
@@Crimson_Dragon01 It would still be weird tho. DsoD conceptually is fine is because its ideas vaguely apply to anime watchers too and it could market itself as "the afterstory for the Yugioh manga". What would a Yugioh R-adaptation even do? "Yeah, so, this is set in the middle of the manga and only really makes sense with context from the manga and does not actually market itself well because it is the afterstory to a less important plotline." Kinda sounds silly. They need to adapt the entire manga for it to work.
Seeing as this was a change made by Studio Gallop rather than 4Kids, and how well it pays off later in the series, I’d say this is a more-than-acceptable change. It’s kinda like Toji in _Evangelion._ He dies in the manga, but in the anime he survives at the literal cost of an arm and a leg.
Keeping him alive was a good decision. He's an icon and a specimen to behold with his personality. I knew about his death in the manga, but his age was what shocked me more. All those grey hairs were strands of wisdom.
Seeing him being carried down the stairs in the series and hearing about how the Manga was much darker than the show, it's not surprising. Not to mention that his eye is yanked from his skull.
Yami Bakura was just a straight up menace, the black air force energy of Yu-Gi-Oh! for sure. Read the manga through recently, such a classic, upset about the censorship though because the story's more meaningful with it I feel. The afterword had me cryin', rest in power Takahashi.
I liked him alive. Another thing you forgot to mention was he was in Yu-Gi-Oh the first movie which I thought his role was very well important as well as all the other important stuff that he was in after he lost the millennium my I think it was a good decision to keep them alive.
I actually thought he died in the anime (I didn't read the manga), surprised that they kept him alive for season 4. I glad they did because at least Pegasus have a chance to redeem himself.
I think his death could be dramatic, but him dying simply from having the item pulled out of his socket didn't make much sense, considering he already lost his eye for the millennium eye, so how could it kill him? We've seen multiple other millennium item holders either lose their items or give them up, yet they didn't die. If anything, the way his eye was merged with the millennium eye in the anime, would've made this make more sense, considering it would be Yami Bakura tearing out his actual eye viciously.
Definitely preferred for him to be alive. No sense in waisting that amount of flamboyance, and in all respect, he was still an honorable man at heart, releasing both of the Kaiba bros, and Yugi's grandpa, after losing the duel.
