"You expect Frank Sinatra to sing this sort of music, these sorts of harmony changes. But it’s a Prokofiev Violin Concerto." - violinist Pekka Kuusisto on Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto
Pekka Kuusisto takes a very personal look at Prokofiev's light-filled First Violin Concerto, which he performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy in May 2018.

My high-school girlfriend, who was a violinist, played me an LP of this piece about 60 years ago. It is one of the most romantic works I've ever heard. I love the way Kuusisto plays the opening melody, so quietly; maybe the best start of this piece I've ever heard.

This has got to be one of the most insightful and enjoyable videos I've ever seen! I loved it!! The Prokofiev #1 is indeed a "perfect" violin concerto. It's one of my favorites. I'm especially attached to Nathan Milstein's interpretation. I wish more great violinists would perform it. It seems Prokofiev #2 gets much more air time (yes, the 2nd movement is unbelievably beautiful). Thank you Mr. Kuusisto for sharing your thoughts on this great masterpiece.

Fantastic violinist! I love all of his concerto/musical analogies and the way he can convey exactly what is in his mind. Wow... I so wish I could experience this concert live

Gosh, I love Pekka. He's a wonderful violinist who has a great love for the music he plays, but also references Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys...awesome! And loved the car crashes on EuroSport LOL!

This piece is so emotional as so many Prokoviev pieces. The soloist produces a beautiful sound with every bow stroke. I can only hope to play at this level of emotional intensity.

What an incredible artist!! I find amazing that he has a full undertsanding of the harmony behind the melodic lines that he is playing 🙏

Believe it or not but, I listen to this concerto every single day. It wakes me in the morning and it plays me to sleep every single night and I listen to it all day long in the car driving about. It would be an understatement to say that I adore it!. With reference to Oistrach, I would imagine that Prokofiev gave him a degree of artistic licence as it was written very much for him. Personally I would not choose his interpretation.

I'm curious which recording(s) you listen to so often. My favorite is the old Szigeti/Beecham recording, which was the first I even encountered, but the dated sound makes it less enjoyable in the car.

This sort of video is marvellous. Fantastic to hear such in-depth perspective from soloists and conductors. Just a shame I missed the concert!

An amazing piece performed by an amazing soloist and orchestra! Could someone elaborate further on his peculiar bow hold? It has always intrigued me since I have not seen a grip so high up the bow.
