Glad it's going to serve a good cause 🎉

Food for thought, if you were able to get into windows 11 with only doing a local account out of the box, they have a modified version of windows 11 running, which fine what ever, but there had been a string of mini PC coming with a version of Windows 11 that had malware/virus already loaded on it. TLDR, load a fresh version of windows regardless what came on it.

It identifies as an OEM version, so I'm not sure of its origin

@@apalrdsadventures hmmm, I feel to be safe you can poke around what other have found and see if you have the infected area. Or just save the windows key and do a fresh load with a tool like Rufus which will allow you to bypass all of the windows 11 stupidity.

@@NeverEnoughRally You can bypass all of the Windows 11, as far as I can tell, regardless of variant. Press Shift+F10 to bring up the command prompty and then type in "oobe\bypassnro" and hit enter, and it will reboot itself and then you won't need a Microsoft account. Easy peasy.

Looks like the price has jumped up considerably since your recording. The price for the 5700u version is now $339 with the 512gb NVME. I wish they sold this as a barebones so I could add my own RAM and storage. Or else have options from the amazon store to max it out on RAM. I haven't done the research yet but wonder if it'd support 2x32gb sodimms.

It's nice that the Type-C port can be used for a monitor output, but it would be worth to test if it can actually be used for a third monitor with the others connected to HDMI and DP at the same time. It's probably not supposed to, but it's worth testing. (UPD. The Amazon page says it does support three monitors, but still). Also would be nice to know if it's possible to unlock or increase the power cap in the BIOS or with some program and then test it for temperatures and noise. Testing the default SSD would be great too, so the folks could know what they're in for. In particular its temperature when the system is under thermal load and the speeds of a big long write operation of dozens of GB. Cheap noname SSDs tend to drop under 10MB/s, i'm curious if it's the case and what speed it drops to. But the manufacturer can change the SSD supplier at any moment so it might not be representative in the future, but the temperatures under load would be great regardless. And another small thing. I understand you intended to review it for server purposes and didn't check the sound, but some folks might use it as a tabletop computer with a 3.5 mm headset of sorts. Would be nice to know if it hums or buzzes in any way in general or when using some USB or network ports. These motherboards can be poorly manufactured and not isolated or grounded properly.

Hey there! I haven't watched your videos in a while. I noticed you've gained some weight. I hope everything is okay with your health. Your videos are still great and always so helpful!

someday all these mini pc will have dual 10g and dual usb5, its gonna be a while but it will happen; for the clustering that you are going to do - good content, do it you can ramp up incrementally

I'm looking for a ~$200 platform (new, not used) that pfSense could reasonably run on. If this were available in a non-Windows version for $200 would it suffice? I realize realtek is not the best for routing, but perhaps if the WiFi and each NIC have dedicated PCI lanes then, maybe? I also wonder what the throughput would be and the transfer speeds it can sustain between WiFi and either ethernet ports, and between the ethernet ports. For example, what total throughput can be achieved at the 2.5G port when routing between it and both the WiFi and 1G port, or is there some internal bottleneck.
@apalrdsadventures
@apalrdsadventures Месяц назад
Realtek's big issue is poor driver support in BSD, it's perfectly adequate hardware in Linux. WiFi drivers are also very lacking in BSD.

I run opnsense (+bunch of plugins) on firebat t8 pro 16gb/512 (~$100 on Ali) with no issues for a year now. CPU load is up to 5%, tons of mem, no problems with freeBSD compatibility, cheap but stable as hell, just reinstalled the OS for the case the preinstalled OS (Win11) could contain malware (it is China after all).
@mjmeans7983
@mjmeans7983 Месяц назад
Doubt China is resorting solely to malware (telemetry) in Windows. I'm more worried about UEFI and ASIC/PLCC based malware which is harder to detect. Or tiny chips implanted in factory molded RJ45 Ethernet cables (difficult to detect). It's only a matter of time (if it's not already possible) until malware can be implanted within an Ethernet cable conductor directly (which would be damn near impossible to detect). 24 AWG wire is much larger than the smallest circuits, so it is technically possible.
