Pele Rises is a film series focusing on Kilauea Volcano's ongoing refilling of Halema'uma'u crater following the historic 2018 collapse. Chapter Three moves through a couple different phases of the June 7th, 2023 Kilauea eruption. The usual lava lake patterns were suddenly interrupted by a spectacular fountain event and unexpected early end.
The eruption began similarly to the previous few. The first fountain burst in Halema'uma'u Crater quickly grew to a massive lava lake covering over 370 acres of surface area. After around 8 days of waning activity, a slowly erupting side wall vent suddenly progressed into the main feature. After several days of incredible action with lava fountaining and falling hundreds of feet, the eruption suddenly stopped. It was one of the shortest in Kilauea's very active recent history, lasting just 12 days. The following eruption of Sept. 10th, 2023 was even shorter, lasting just 6 days.
