I had the chance to solo hike Pen Y Fan Horseshoe / Brecon Beacons Horseshoe for the first time and captured the views it has to offer. This incredible Pen Y Fan ridge walk hike is in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park, it is a circular 10 mile ridge walk that ascends four peaks, three of which are the highest peaks in South Wales. The trail I took starts you off at Neuadd Reservoir Carpark and follows a pretty steep climb up to the horseshoe ridge walk offering you hella views of the popular Brecon Beacons peaks. The trail I used only covers 3 peaks along the Pen Y Fan horseshoe ridge walk, but as an optional extra at the end, you can also go up Fan Y Big if you so desire.

This was a recreational training day during pre-parachute regiment selection for me in 2010 to keep up my fitness with 4 PARA .. 55 pounds of weight , boots , t shirt and denims with a smock and a litre of water in the bergan .. a 16km round trip with a climb of I think around 900 meters to the highest point pen y fan this was an absolute lick .. civilians take a 4-5 hour walk round this route ( we used to pass them 😂 ) and the pathways are well worn throughout , all us para reg lads did this in under 2 hours my personal time with my oppo Nick Mullins was 1 hour 52 mins soaking wet freezing our nads off .. very scenic extremely daunting with the constant changing weather conditions, undulating terrain proves a beast of a challenge .. fan y big to cribyn was my personal tough point heading up to pen y fan was easier don’t know why it was a steep climb .. maybe I warmed up .. good video .. cheers .. utrinique paratus #airbornefitness 👌👌

Wow one of the best video's I've watched on this area what a stunning place which you captured very well and what a stunning video. I was going to do this hike this year but decided to go to Scotland for a wild camp instead because the weather was better but I will still be doing this walk one day. I watched this before seeing how many subs you had and was thinking you must have thousands but was very shocked see you only have 102. I inch my videos was a professional as yours definitely a new sub from me😁👍
@oliverkillian
@oliverkillian Год назад
That is super kind of you to say, thank you! It was a good hike for sure and had lots of fun filming it, you'll have a great time when you go, though Scotland is not a bad trade up! I don't think I'm consistent enough for the high subs yet, one day when my job doesn't keep me so busy I may stick to a regular schedcule~ :P

Hey thanks for watching~ You'll enjoy the hike I'm sure, it's a pretty straight forward route so I don't think you need to worry about getting lost even if you don't know the area,. I hope you get great weather, be sure to take a good windproof and something warm just in case! It does get quite chilly on top of those summits when the wind picks up, even on sunny days like in this video :D

Thank you for this beautiful video, Oliver. As a family of 4 we’ll be glamping in the Brecons in a couple of weeks & this looks like a good hike to do. I wasn’t sure if it’s too strenuous, so enjoyed your video. I think we’ll give it a try 👍

I was about 14 years old at the top of Pen Y Fan and was approached by two middle-aged women whose golden retriever puppy had gone over the edge. I climbed down and traversed the face but it was in a bad way. It revived a bit after some water but couldn't walk and was too heavy for me to carry. I stayed with it for a couple of hours until it died. I built some stones over it. The women were very upset but it actually not only ruined my holiday but left me upset for weeks afterwards. The mountains are no place for your pet dogs, they can't appreciate the dangers even on a fine day.
@oliverkillian

What a horrible ordeal for all, sorry you had to go through that. I hope you are able to build fonder memories of the place.

Get yourself a pair of hiking poles. They help take some of the strain off your legs on the ascents and descents.

Awesome video you seriously missed a stunning opportunity with fan y big and "the diving board" i would say the most spectacular out of all 4 peaks. Its a regular exercise route i walk the roman road back allways seems to take its toll on my ankles on the way back.

Nice vid, a little correction, Corn Du or I have heard it called Corn DDU, whatever, you say Du to English! you should say sort of like Corn De, the Welsh U is pronounced more like an E but sometimes a little different, but e for now.
@oliverkillian
@oliverkillian 4 месяца назад
Haha yes I'm starting to pick up on that, takes a little brain training to stop myself saying the U sound as my eyes see it. Cheers!

I was using Alltrails and just followed the lil navigator, but it was a pretty straight forward trail anyway once you're on the ridge. It's a sheer drop all along one side so there's only one path to follow, unless you wanna roll down the hill :p
