In the historic center of Sintra, the Sintra National Palace stands out, but it is the colorful Palacio da Pena that you see on all the postcards. It is considered one of the most beautiful places in Portugal.
The Pena National Palace stands on top of a high hill in the Sintra mountains. On a clear day it can be seen from Lisbon.
The history of this magical place dates back to the 12th century, a time when a hermitage dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Pena was located here. The palace we know today was ordered to be built by King Ferdinand II of Portugal. The construction of the was completed in 1854. It was classified as a National Monument in 1910. Since 1995 the palace and Parque da Pena are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In 2007, Da Pena was listed as one of the seven wonders of Portugal for the magnificent landscapes and views it offers its visitors, as well as for its historical and artistic importance.
Day trips from Lisbon to Sintra are common, although at least two days are needed to explore all the historical attractions.
The most comfortable and economical way to get from Lisbon to Sintra is public transport.
From Lisbon, take the Sintra line to the Sintra train station. You can depart from the Oriente, Rossio, Entrecampos stations. From Sintra train station, take bus 434 to da Pena.
