In both of these sacraments, we see again the delicacy of the Lord's design.
For he has provided the bestowal of grace unto the constellation and fortification of each human heart. By these many signs and instruments of Christ's incarnate presence in the world, the reign of the Kingdom of God is made living and effective in potent fashion.

Patriarch Gennadius Scholarius, whom your Church considers a Saint, said the same thing about Aquinas. According to him Aquinas is a very good source except for filioque and essence-energies distinction. Indeed, Gennadius called him the *best* interpreter and synthesizer of christian Dogma on the matters agreed by East and West.

I'm a cradle Catholic and have practiced the faith all my life (now near retirement). I have been well catechized and taught the faith in CCD classes for many years. But viewing your videos including this one on the sacraments of healing is taking my knowledge of the Catholic faith to new heights. God Bless you, Father, and everyone at the Thomistic Institute!

I just want to run to my Lord Jesus and weep at his feet. I feel so unworthy yet loved. I feel so broken yet somehow Jesus is holding this broken sinner together. Thank you so much for being Christ's witness in this video.

I was an atheist for the first 26 years of my life. Last year in RCIA I thought often, "I hope I never have to make use of confession. That sounds scary." But now all I can say is praise God for giving us the sacrament of penance. I don't think we'll ever fully understand, even in eternity, just how much we are loved. Many thanks to everyone at The Thomistic Institute; you'll be in my prayers.

Please do yourself a favour and read Hebrews 9 and 10 and know that God dwells in us by his spirit. Also Romans 1 and 2 it is by grace we have been saved athrough faith and not of yourself it's a gift for God not of works. How long have you been a believer?

Sorry One more thing, is we have to go through Purgatory to have pur sins removed that means Jesus failed and his blood wasn't good enough. Have you ever read the Holy Bible that teaches us that by the blood of Jesus we are justified and he cast our sins into the sea of Forgetfulness As far as the East is from the West he removes our sins. And 1 John 1:9 say is we sin confess them onto God and he will forgive us and leads us into all Righteousness. I can't stress enough how important it is to read the Holy Bible.

At 1:57 it's said that the matter is every mortal sin confessed since the last confession, but one can include an earlier confessed sin and that would be still matter. For example, in a general confession it's expected to confess earlier sins.
@thomism1016
@thomism1016 Год назад
In addition to the mortal and venial sins brought to confession, the matter also includes one’s CONTRITION, a vital element of the sacrament

At last a mention of the temporal punishment due to sins! I am correct that this is the first video in which this has come up? I thought the Church had forgotten about this. Incidentally, although the Latin "et" is correct in the background, on the subtitles it is incorrectly rendered "at."

Great video! I believe it is, but to be clear, is sin still absolved if forgotten during the confession.
@dannyallen2894
@dannyallen2894 3 года назад
The way I have had it explained to me is that if you remember a sin that you forgot in confession you should bring it up next time that you go to the sacrament.
@ThomisticInstitute
@ThomisticInstitute 3 года назад
While one must confess all mortal sins in species and number, if someone intends to confess a sin that he unintentionally forgets about during the course of confessing his sins, that's not a reason to think he wasn't absolved. Still, one should confess it in a subsequent confession.
@ThomisticInstitute
@ThomisticInstitute 3 года назад
PS: To put this another way, the sacramental absolution works to forgive sins if the penitent confesses all the sins he can remember. You have to intend to confess all your sins. But if you get in the confessional and then forget something, and do the best you can, it is forgiven - and you should mention it at your next opportunity to confess. Sometimes it happens that someone will remember a sin that, for example, he committed many years ago. ("I just remembered the terrible thing I did to my brother when I was 10 years old -- I never confessed that!") In that case, as long as in your previous confessions you had intended to confess all your sins, but simply didn't recall that one, the sacramental absolution did forgive that forgotten sin. And so you should mention it the next time you confess.

Serious question here. If I hate listening to a certain kind of music that my wife likes and I do not complain or otherwise seem bothered by it does that count as a penance?
@FlowLai
@FlowLai 3 года назад
I'm confused here. I thought the term is "Reconciliation" which seems like what you're describing. The 'penance' is a separate act that the penitent might be asked to accomplish, but its completion has no relationship with the absolution provided in the sacrament of Reconciliation. Am I missing something here? Is the term 'penance' you use in the video the same as "Reconciliation?"
@dannyallen2894
@dannyallen2894 3 года назад
The sacrament of confession can also be called sacrament of penance in general, while the penance itself falls under what he called satisfaction. So penance as meaning "the sacrament of confession" is confession considered in itself, while the act of penance specifically is the prescribed penance given by the priest to make satisfaction and effect the atonement "for the temporal punishment associated with sin" as was said in the video.
@ThomisticInstitute
@ThomisticInstitute 3 года назад
Both of the terms, although they can describe a different aspect of the sacrament, can be used to refer to the same sacrament (penance, confession, Reconciliation, etc.). If you're interested, paragraphs 1423-1424 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church give about five different names for the same sacrament and describe why those names fit: (www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p2s2c2a4.htm)

Does the prescribed penance executed after receiving absolution in confession remit all temporal punishment due for the sins committed or only partially?
@Joker22593
@Joker22593 3 года назад
It is not garunteed to remit all temporal punishment, but it may do so; that is up to God. Our uncertainty is why we are called to do regular penance of our own volition, traditionally on Fridays.
@carissstewart3211
@carissstewart3211 2 года назад
I don't think so. An indulgence is a remission of the temporal punishment due to sin, the guilt of which has been forgiven. That includes the temporal punishment due to confessed mortal sins. The indulgence can either be plenary or partial. In any case, I know I commit more venial sins than I can remember, so it's probably best to seek indulgences for those. You can also show charity to the souls in Purgatory by obtaining indulgences for them. (The way I see it, if my prayers help someone out of Purgatory, he or she will pray for me so I can avoid Hell.)

Is it to be precise in act or in instance? Does a half senile 91 year old kleptomaniac need to confess every theft, or only the act of stealing? And if this is such a special case that there are exeptions made, how is that decided? Would a 50 year old kleptomaniac with a perfect memory have to confess evey instanse?
@ThomisticInstitute
@ThomisticInstitute 3 года назад
For mortal sins, we're to confess them in species (what did we do) and number (how many times did we do it). Sometimes, "number" can mean frequency and duration if we're unable to determine the precise number of times. "Number" doesn't mean describing the circumstance of every instance, unless there's something about the circumstance that should be confessed (e.g., "I stole a chalice from a Church"). For our 50 y.o. kleptomaniac, then, he wouldn't need to confess that he stole from this, that, or the other place on MM/DD/YYYY and continue until he describes every theft, but only that he stole x number of times or has been stealing roughly x number of times a week for a certain period of time.
