Sometimes just knowing a few pencil drawing techniques can save you years on learning how to draw. Artist Bobby Chiu shares his techniques to create the pencil drawings he's been doing in Paris for his Alice through the Looking Glass gallery show. (this Thursday May 26, 2016 at 18:30-21:30). You also get to see a video of Bobby drawing from scratch with commentary. We hope you enjoy!

Woo-hoo! Another Bobby video! Yo, I never see anyone actually take the time to explain this simple yet effective technique. Sometimes we take for granted techniques like these. Nice to see a pro actually break down the use and and the purpose.

I am currently studying Art&Design for my school and I am best at dry mediums. I prefer pencil and mechanical pencils so I find this video very useful for me! I normally draw structures and vehicles so when I do shading; this helps me a bit. Now all that is left is that I want to draw cracks and unevenness of a concrete surface at both long and short distance. Could you make a video about that?

Thanks for the video, Bobby! Actually I started using the overhand position because I have minor hand tremors and discovered I have more control and better line quality. In fact I quit drawing for about 15 years due to the frustration, but started up around 2010 again. Also i found if I rotate the pencil frequently I maintain the point longer.

Nice. I'm not exactly from a art school , but during my 17s .. Art was part of a subject. And I score very well in pencil drawing.. but I really sux in coloring or projects like modeling and stuffs lol. The school don't really teach really good art anyway. Kudos to pencil drawing. I always hold the pencil and draw horizontally and never vertical.that paper trick a good idea lol. I always smudge my work.

I feel inspired by your method of using the rough to get the completion by laying out then committing - Always had a hard time dealing with this since i crash and burn attempting to go over the line with a darker pencil thus ruining the initial flow since im lv 1 clean up artist. You know, I've seen a lot of videos on how to hold the pencil, but they never go in depth of which textures you can use while drawing so this was super helpful! Interesting video. I think it really depends on which material you use. For charcoal I think this might be best. (I would even intuitively hold it like that). With pens I think it would be really difficult. With a lot of experience on ballpoint pens I doubt it would improve results there...

hey bobby, i started a drawing class in my city and we draw on easels which i find extreeemely hard. do you draw with your elbow and shoulder? and if so do you use both at the same time or one at a time because i have zero control when using both
@Beanie84

Great video! Holding my pencil differently not only affects my lines, but the way I think. Sometimes ideas flow faster or I "see" little opportunities withing a drawing to make it more interesting. I'm still stuck in "writing" mode when drawing because holding the pencil similar to conte feels unnatural. Thanks for the reminder to switch it up!

i try to base how harsh my lines are on how far away from the tip of the pencil/pen i'm holding it. closer you get a more precise, solid line but further away its just soft and not really indicating any real detail or final lines.

I'm gonna try to use this way of holding the pencil. I always draw holding my pencil as a pen, and from the wrist. But this way of holding the pen seems to force you to draw from the shoulder, which I heard is better. It will be uncomfortable, but I'm gonna try it for sure.

Nice tutorial and advices, I always questioned about the quality, weight and tonal values of lines. Sir what's the hold and sharpening to master loose sketching. I always leave a solid sharp scratch marks on the paper. I don't know if the problem is the quality of the pencil or me doing, even if I always sketch lightly 😁 👍🍩 ☕ 🎱 😃
