Eurasian Penduline Tits (Remiz pendulinus) are uncommon songbirds that occur in Europe, Asia and parts of the Middle East. Although related to “true tits”, they are in a separate family of their own. They feed mostly on small insects and spiders, but will occasionally also eat small seeds. They have a soft and “thin” call that not everybody will be able to pick up.
The most characteristic feature of Penduline Tits is their nest. They build and weave nests hanging from low branches of Willows and Birches, often above water. The nest is a free hanging structure, made of grasses, leaves and sometimes hair and wool, with one entrance only. Both male and female Penduline Tits build the nest together, which takes about 20 days to complete before the female can start breeding.
