Just 3.5 hours south of Lima lie the Islas Ballestas off the coast of Peru. All boats leave from the little coastal town, Paracas. It's often done as a day trip from Lima.
It's a protected area full of wildlife. It's nicknamed the "Poor Man's Galapagos" since it's significantly cheaper than a trip to the Galapagos in Ecuador.
If you're a nature and wildlife lover, add this to your Peru travel itinerary.
We combined this experience with a desert sand dune excursion in Huacachina (Ica, Peru). I do not recommend trying to do this on your own. At the marina in Paracas, it was insanely crowded and chaotic. I was glad we didn't have to deal with buying tickets. Also we didn't have to wait too long for our boat.
Our $40 per person full day tour included:
- Transport to and from Lima and everywhere in between
- Speedboat tour of the Islas Ballestas
- Pisco tasting (pisco is a strong, fermented alcohol made from grapes, similar to grappa)
- Dune buggy tour of the dunes surrounding Huacachina
- Sand boarding in the dunes
Not included:
- Food: snacks, lunch, dinner
- Water, drinks
- Souvenirs
- Tips for your full-day guides
