It discusses the difference in the two reels and shows how to clean, lube and reassemble the reel and its level wind feature. For additional information on how to reset the anti reverse dog, view my video on the Penn Long Beach series. The 210 is used in this video and the anti reverse dog is different on the 209.
I have been servicing reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experience here. If you enjoy the video, please "like" it. If you want to see more, please subscribe to my channel. Comments". Questions? I reply to all. Thank you - Dennis

Dennis. No kidding I was once long ago a manufacturing engineer on the NASA spacesuit. I knew a lot of “ace” assemblers in the space lab. You remind me of the best of the best of them. You are so good at what you do and you have done it so much that you are now super intuitive. When people first learn things (like me with reels) you have to think about it. You don’t. It’s autonomic memory for you. I really enjoy your videos. Thanks man. Your a brother from another mother.

I've had 4 209's, 2 210's, and 2 309 GT's since 2002. They all work well fishing for salmon on Lake Michigan. I watched your video to take apart the 209's and 210's. Thanks for saving me a lot of time and headache.

I've got a Penn 85 Seaboy and after watching almost all your videos I decided to pick up a 209 and 210 really cheap on ebay. You're very talented and knowledgeable on this subject. There's no doubt that you enjoy what you're doing and it's fantastic that you're sharing your expertise with us. I'm inexperienced with these types of reels, being from the southern US, and look forward to using them on some big cats. Thanks Dennis for all you do.

I just acquired a Shakespeare Service 1944 model GE. I was able to determine it was made in 1946. This seems like a very solidly built and well made reel. Penn reels seem to have many similarities to the old Shakespeares. Is there any way you can do a video on one of these?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 6 лет назад
I don't have one, but I have a few older Shakespeare reels. I will check with what I have and do a video on the oldest one. Technology did not change much in those years and there is a good chance they will be similar. Thanks for asking - Dennis

I'm sorry, but I just discovered your channel and I've watched several of your Penn "maintenance" videos so far from beginning to end (Penn #9, 109, 209, 210, 309, 65, 85, 285, etc.), and I am utterly ASTOUNDED at how many crucial parts you literally add ZERO grease or oil to! It's staggering! Not only that, but these are all reels you said have not been serviced for a long time, have sat around, or were bought in flea markets or antique shops, etc. With that said, in nearly all of the videos I have watched so far, you never cleaned or even greased the main and pinion gears whatsoever prior to re-assembly!!! Amongst other very key parts! 😮 Your videos are a good reference point for how different models of reels are assembled, but in all due respect - and please know I take no pleasure in saying this - but in complete honesty: I wouldn't let you touch any of my reels for service with a 10 foot pole. How you re-assemble a reel without cleaning or greasing the drive gears as a BARE minimum is COMPLETELY beyond me. Wow...just wow. *shakes head

Thanks. Picked up a bucket of 209s tonight for rigging lead core. The video allowed me to go through the ones with a weak clicker and bound up retrieves. One clicker was all but worn off, I flipped it around so what’s left is functioning as a pretty good sounding click, but I’ll order a replacement.

That sounds like a nice trick for the worn clicker that will allow it to work a little longer. Thanks for sharing - Dennis

what about a 109 that has a two screw side plate. can't figure it out looks good but every time I put it together the free spool won't work. no release to cast out line.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 6 лет назад
I don't recall the free spool set up. I know it is not the traditional set up you would see in the Penn 9 that has the jack, yoke and release springs. I haven't worked on one of those in a very long time. You may want to get the schematic and check that you have reassembled the reel correctly. You go to Pennparts.com for the schematic and you can call them with questions. They are very good about helping.

I purchased a 210 awhile back, but it doesn't have anti-reverse. When the reel is engaged it spins clockwise and counterclockwise. Is something potentially broken inside the reel causing it to not stop?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 2 года назад
Yes - you likely have a broken or worn anti-reverse dog or spring or both. Those parts should still be available through Mysticparts.com You can follow the video on how to take the reel apart and replace the worn parts on reassembly. Thanks for asking. I hope this helps Dennis
@endurocatfish
@endurocatfish 5 лет назад
What would cause one of these (209) to not reel in under a load regardless of drag adjustment?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 лет назад
The normal cause would be worn or broken drags. It is hard to say without taking the reel apart. A secondary cause could be a broken piece of line trapped inside the reel. If you have the drag tightened all the way down and can pull the line out by hand, then it is usually the worn drags. Lastly- are you using braid? If you are, and it has not been backed with mono for the first several yards, then it could be the braid slipping around the spool, which will cause the same problem.

Hi Dennis I have a question if you have a reel with a level wind and you want to take it off is that hard to do that hard to do thanks for your time and help 😊
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 3 года назад
They are a lot easier to take off than to put on. If you do decide to remove it, take the idler gear or worm drive gear off as well. That will reduce the friction and speed up the spool for casting better - Dennis

Hey buddy, I have a question about the 209. I would like to remove the clicker from when I reel, it's not the switched clicker its the more quieter one. Is this possible?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 лет назад
I believe the clicker you are referring to is the anti-reverse dog, which sits on a toothed gear and clicks each time it moves to the next slot. It is not possible to eliminate this click without removing the anti reverse dog. If you do that, the reel will operate as a direct drive and the handle will spin backwards when the fish pulls your line. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Yes - the procedures are the same. The #9 is just a smaller version. The drags, bridge assembly and other parts are smaller, but the process is the same. The #9 reel is sturdy and dependable. Good luck with the overhaul. If you run into a snag, send a note and I will see if I can help - Dennis

I use a 209 for bottom (rock) fishing. Man is it slow reeling back and unpleasant with the small handle. Was going to add a larger handle but the money for the handle can be spent in buying a more modern reel for not much more.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 6 лет назад
Yes - the 209 uses the Penn Long Beach gears, which is approximately 2.7:1, so it is very slow on the retrieve. If you get the 210, which I showed in this video, you get the higher retrieve as it uses the JigMaster gears. The 309 also uses the JigMaster setup, so both are better off with either than the 209. I personally fit the Daiwa Sealine, but that is not a level wind reel. Many of the comparable "modern" reels from Shimano, Daiwa and Okuma feature gears as high as 6.2:1 in the conventional level wind reel. I generally don't like them that high as you can rip the hook from the fish with the high speed retrieve.

Do you have any info on the Gamefisher TR/24 reel? It looks like a Penn copy.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 6 лет назад
The Gamefisher tr/24 is a reel that was made in Japan for Sears. The original Gamefisher branding was by Garcia, so it is also possible that they contracted for this reel to be manufactured for Sears under that name. It may also have been made by Daiwa. Several of the Sears reels, like the King Neptune were Daiwa products. The reels are generally reliable, but parts tend to be difficult to find. Any private label reels were made in Japan in the 80's and 90's by various manufacturers including Ryobi, Daiwa, Olympic, Compac and others. - Dennis

James - Chances are that there is dirt or dried grease on the worm gear or in the pawl assembly. If it has been sitting for some time, then that would be my first thought. Try spraying the worm gear with WD40 or another penetrating oil. Then remove the pawl cap and do the same to the pawl. Let it sit for a while and then try cranking to see if it resolved the problem. If it works properly, then just put a drop of reel oil on the pawl and close it up. If it still sticks then let me know and we can try something else - Dennis

Why does the line pile up higher on right side of spool?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 9 месяцев назад
The cause is usually a dirty or worn pawl or grit in the worm track. You can start by removing the pawl and cleaning the top. Check the points to make sure they are even - If one is broken or worn more, you will need to replace it. Parts are available through mystic parts.com - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 лет назад
14-99 is the dog spring and is comparable. 15-99 I the dog for the Long Beach. 15-209 is the dog for the 209. I believe the 209 dog is shorter than the one for the Long Beach reel and not compatible or interchangeable. as a reminder, if you have a worn anti reverse dog, check the gear sleeve to make sure that the teeth are not worn. If you are replacing the anti-reverse dog, you may need to replace the gear sleeve as well. - Thank you for asking. Parts are available at mystic parts.com and they can confirm that these are different anti-reverse dogs.

I got 209 worm gear not working how do I get it working
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 лет назад
There are 3 main causes for the worm gear not working. The first is a broken pawl. The second is a broken transition gear, which is plastic and located inside the bearing side plate and the third is a broken worm gear. To check, turn the reel upside down. so that you can see the exposed part of the worm gear. Crank the reel. Is the worm gear turning? If it is not, remove the bearing side plate. That is the one without the handle. Check the plastic gear. Are the teeth missing or chipped? It they are missing, it will not turn the worm gear. If they are chipped, the worm gear may turn, but not move the line guide. If the plastic gear is OK, but the line guide is not moving, remove the pawl. The pawl is located in the screw cap under the line guide. The top of the pawl should look like the letter "Y". If one of the forces is broken. it will not operate properly and will need to be replaced. Finally, if the gear and the pawl are OK, then you need to check the worm gear to make sure it is not damages and that the track are not scarred or out of alignment. If they are, then you will need to replace the worm gear. Parts are available from Mysticparts.com. They are a distributor for Penn Parts. Let me know if these suggestions help. Thanks for asking - Dennis

The difference is that the 210 has ball bearings on both side plates. The 209 has the bushings. As a result, the 210 is smoother and casts easier. The is the only difference. It's like the Jigmaster 500 and 505. FYI Dennis

Show a 209 not an easier version that you claim drops right in. How do you not have a 209?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 лет назад
Sven - The reason I do not have a 209 is that I do videos of the reels that come into my shop for repair and I have not had a 209 to work on in a while. I have that on my list of to do items and will do the 209 when one comes in for servicing. The 210 has a bridge mounted anti reverse dog, somewhat similar to the Penn Jugmaster. That enables you to service the drags and "drop in" the bridge for reinstall. You are correct, the 209 does not have that feature and you must rotate the bridge to complete the anti-reverse dog installation. If you want to re-check the video, you can see the bridge mounted anti-reverse dog around the 8:00 mark. I appreciate you watching the video and taking the time to comment. Stay tuned. I am sure I will get a 209 sooner or later. I do have a 309 that I am waiting on parts in order to do a repair. I will post that one in the next week or two, as soon as the parts arrive - Dennis
