I wish we can still buy these. So simply and superbly made!

Yes they are (were) well made and simple. Penn has been in and out of light and ultralight tackle, but this one was a keeper. Thanks for the note - Dennis

Greetings to you, Dennis, this machine is very similar to the Dam Kwik 330, and I still have the opinion that the seventies and eighties of the last century are the era of the renaissance of the hunting machine

Hello Dennis - very nice looking fishing reel , having the gold with the black gives it a nice touch, yes your so right about taking pictures while taking a fishing reel apart like in this case the bail screws were put together in the wrong holes, the inside looked very clean - good video .

So much of reel repair is about cleaning and maintaining your reel; until Dennis gets it and figures out how somebody else messed it up!!! Keep up the great work but I think everyone wants to know now, which current fast food restaurant is your parts tray???? It has changed over the years of your videos!!!
@2ndChanceTackle

And it will change again Scott! Actually it is a takeout tray from the local supermarket. One of those grab and go modern TV type dinners! Hope all is well - Dennis

Nice Penn Z series ultralight spinning reel! A used one is now selling for over $80.00 USED! Twice what they sold for brand new! 5 years ago they were being sold for a reasonable price! But now everyone thinks all older reels are like gold! Nice video I enjoy watching them for the take down knowledge and listening to your voice tone & cadence it's almost hypnotic because I'll catch myself going into a rim sleep and then waking up to you, still knocking down a reel! TMI thanks Byrne

These are available on Ebay all the time, but they do command a pretty penny. The greenie and Z series are identical inside, so it really just depends what color you prefer or just which one you can get ahold of. I scored a Penn 716 greenie off Ebay last year for $80 and considered that a decent deal on it, the 716z is available far more often in much better condition and NOS spools are available regularly too. I really like these reels, they're precise and smooth with the highest quality long lasting materials you'll find in a reel. No plastic or pot metal inside, just brass steel and aluminum with the only plastic being the knob and drag adjuster. I had a little trouble with mine because I took pictures and put everything back in how it came, but somebody before me had put some things into the reel incorrectly. I bought a new cover plate screw because it was replaced with something wrong, and it turned out the cover plate screw had been swapped with that crosswind arm screw in the main gear and neither were missing. That was also part of why it wasn't reeling smoothly.

Interesting. It is amazing how easy it is to reinstall a part in the wrong place. I see it a lot - Thanks for sharing - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle even more interesting to think that something as minor as getting 2 screws mixed up can have such a significant impact on the performance of the reel.

One of my favorites. What a tough little guy. I used them to catch crappie on Kentucky lake and Mahi Mahi offshore of Anna Maria island Florida. They have such great drags and hold a good amount of line. The Spinfisher series would cripple some companies because people don’t need to purchase a new reel very often. The ss or 3rd gen series is almost indestructible

You are so right about planned obsolesce - A friend of mine just replaced a gas water heater he had for almost 30 years. The repair person said he would be lucky to get 7 years out of the new one!

You were a huge help with my 302 Thanks I'm redoing my 716z and I think I could use a new spring that returns the bail any chance you know where I can get one? Or kind of recondition the one I have? thanks
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Год назад
You should be able to get that spring through Mysticparts.com They are a Penn Parts distributor. Before you go for a replacement spring, make sure the bail wire is not bent or misshapen. Those springs don't lose tension, unless they break. If it is tripping but not snapping back, flood the bail arm assembly with a penetrating oil to free it up. That usually works
@martinsmythe3414
@martinsmythe3414 Год назад
@@2ndChanceTackle I noticed that the spring in mine seems to be less robust than the one in your reel? but I will try your suggestion
@martinsmythe3414
@martinsmythe3414 Год назад
@@2ndChanceTackle I found that the pin on the spring that goes in the hole on the bail wire wasn't at 90 degrees to the spring more like 45 kept coming out. I bent it to 90 and now it seems to be staying in the hole. Reel is now working nice again. One issue when I tighten the bail wire screw on the opposite side from the spring the bail wire will not return. I thought the colar on the screw was supposed to prevent that? any suggestions Thanks

I was lucky to pick up a pretty well used but not abused 716z recently on eBay for a very fair price. They are so expensive when in good shape. The side medallion is missing, any chance you have another medallion for one of these? Looking forward to comparing this to my Mitchell 304, they seem comparable, perfect for small lakes or streams.

@jonhammes6209 Год назад
@@stevecarrero4120 the 420ss uses the same gearbox as the 716 with the exception of a silent anti-reverse. From the rotor outward it's a different reel though. The 4200ss is a graphite bodied reel and is nowhere as tough as the 420ss and 716. For a comparable reel to the 716 but more affordable, look at the Shakespeare Royal Maroon 2052. They are very close in build quality and durability

@@jonhammes6209 And yes, thanks for the additional information. I really appreciate it. I have a 4200ss and have been using it for bass fishing since 1994. Really have never had any problems with it. Although based on it size I would never think of using it in the salt. It works as designed, light rods and typical fresh water lakes,ponds and NJ size bass and pan fish. Thanks again 👍

I know this reel and it is out of my price range. I have four reels from this series - 3 are much larger and one is smaller. I’ve been trying to get a 710Z or 712Z rather than this one. You know, Dennis, I was working on a vintage Daiwa 7850HRL reel and I tried every trick and method I knew and I could not budge that pinion and bearing in that reel. You never have a problem. It is infuriating! LOL This is a great reel and I definitely wish I had one. Great video Dennis. - Chris
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Год назад
I never said I never have that problem. I think there are a few videos where I let the sleeping dog lie if the bearing is OK or if replacement arts are unavailable. There are some reels where the bearing rim jams with rust from the case and it is almost impossible to remove - Sometimes it's not worth the effort Thanks Chris

@2ndChanceTackle

Yes, but who cares. Go ahead and paint it and then take it fishing. The reel isn't worth much if it have bad or worn paint, so do what you like and give it a 2nd Chance

@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 8 месяцев назад
The 714Z and 716Z are considered the the Ultra-lite reels with he 720-722 also considered freshwater reels. The 720-722 have a different body style and design and appear larger than the 714-716 even though the line capacity is similar - Thanks for asking - Dennis
