Thanks Dennis. I just did one of these last week for a friend of mine. He had a broken gear side plate. The new one didn’t have the oiler access port. I’m assuming they deleted that on later years. It came out pretty good but the chrome bars and seat were badly pitted. It’s a good working reel though and it’s getting a “Second Chance”. Thanks again.
Yes - that reel was in production for over 40 years and it had a variety of changes in the color and design of the side plates. The good this is that they are all interchangeable. Fish on! Dennis
Those reel parts are no longer available. Best to check Ebay for a used spool is you are rebuilding a reel. Note that the spool from a 285 and the LongBeacj 60 will also fit the model 85 reel Dennis
I couldn't see the big spring under the brass plate you slipped in. The spring goes with the lever that you didn't take off. I have that same reel and need to know how it goes on so I can finally finish assembling the reel. Thanks
Carl - I am thinking you are referring to the anti-reverse dog spring. Watch this video. The reel is different, but the process is the same - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1Jy1xiPz6dA.html Dennis
Hi Dennis 👋 I picked up a peen #85 , stripped and cleaned, assembled then took it out for test. I usually fly fish so using a fly rod , cast and had the drum brake wrong, birds nest. Long story short, after I removed the nest of nylon, I found the drum has a high spot. As the line is pulled out the drum is smooth, then tightens slightly then frees up again. I've taken the reel apart and found nothing to indicate a high spot or rubbing. Checked for any little bits of nylon that may have gotten inside, however I've not taken apart the brass gearing plate inside yet. After the first strip down the drum ran free. Do you have any ideas about this. I'm hesitant to strip the "gearbox" however I'm a retired auto mechanic so if thats needed I will. Thanks for your informative and to the point videos on reels. I know here in NZ they are greatly appreciated by fishermen as we tend to fix things rather than replace in NZ.
That reel is over 30 years old at a minimum. I suspect you have a warped spool (drum). That cannot be made true. You would need to replace it. = Thanks for asking and for watching - Dennis
