Ahh Penn Central, the worlds most disorganized and disfunctional railroad. Still somehow lasted two years. Its amazing how it somehow survived that long.
Penn Central got stuck with the task of downsizing the system maps, downsizing the workforce, and downsizing the physical plant to reflect the new reality that railroads were going to lose customers to the trucks, they were going to lose customers to the Clean Air Act, and they’d be lucky to get their little toe in the door on TOFC. It should be no surprise to anyone that Penn Central’s railroad fell apart underneath them. America abused the bejeebers out of its railroads in two world wars and a police action and then left them high and dry as they fell apart. A grateful nation should have been ready to help rebuild the infrastructure it destroyed in the wars but instead they strangled the railroads further by building the Interstate Highway System. Penn Central was the player without a chair and a target on its back.
I just saw Conrail hopper cars with "NYC" reporting marks in the CSX yard in Riverdale, IL a couple of days ago. I was like "WTF?!! Conrail still exists on the East Coast, but why the heck are the NYC reporting marks still used, and they don't look 50 years old.
Actually, my friend, appearances can be deceiving, that photograph is manipulated because to date the T-1 class of locomotive was scrapped when the PRR still existed at that time.
Hey I uploaded this on my channel awhile ago because I got it as a discord meme and I uploaded it, I assume that I should take it down because it is your content
