Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his RU-vid videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

Rick, I usually put a drop of oil down the screw holes for the side plate screws when reassembling my reels. It’s a habit I started almost 5 years ago. Also I clean and oil the line rollers on my saltwater reels instead of using grease. I don’t want trap micro-sand in that roller with grease. These Fierce reels look quite solid but I can’t get past not having the AR override. I hope these reels serve you well on your boat! Great video as always. - Chris PS. Rick I unboxed that Ohmori Shakespeare 2260 Saltwater spinning reel and tool the old line off. The reel is in extraordinary great shape. It will make a superb surf reel someday when I can walk again.

Chris, the holes got oiled when I cleaned the case, it just didn’t get shown. As for the oil vs grease argument, I’ve been giving this some thought. Once micro sand gets into either oil or grease, I don’t think it’s ever coming back out on its own. I don’t think one is more likely to trap it than the other. Both are liquid and once a spec of sand touches the liquid I believe it going to get stuck to it. If this is true, then it only comes down to rolling resistance. The roller is so tiny I don’t think it creates enough resistance whether oiled or grease to make a difference. That said, I still switch back and forth between oil and grease on the rollers. So far I haven’t found any perceptible difference. I look forward to you being able to get back out there and use the Shakespeare 2260

Mike at the 33 minute and 33 second point in the video I install the axle shaft. At the top of the axle shaft is the clicker cog for the drag. On top of that is a drag washer. Dishwasher is used to set the level position of the spool. When the spool rides too high, you should remove the washer. When the spool rides too low, you should add washers. Yours may require removal of one or more washers. it’s also possible that your spool just isn’t fitting all the way down onto the axle shaft. Do you know the history of this real? Have you ever seen it operate correctly? It could be built up of incorrectly mated parts That said, it’s still more likely to just need an extra drag washer removed. I hope this helps

Short answer is yes. If you have watched my video and still can’t get it to work then I haven’t done a good enough job in my video. Send me an email to rick48cj2@yahoo.com and I’ll send you my address. Did you replace the bearings. It the center hub will not turn inside the bearing, then it will stick. Stuck bearings must be replaced.

@youngmartinsreels5314 No sir I haven't replaced any thing I did what you did in the video. I noticed it was a little tight then soaked in thinner then oil since tue It seemed to be free.

Grease looks alittle dry rick.

It was dry. The biggest problem I had though besides the saltwater intrusion was the dried up grease in the side bearing. Once I got that freed up it worked so much better.
