Nice Vid Ali. I still remember the days spent learning to throw the Iron back in the early 90’s when I used to live in ocean beach point loma area. I was a carpet installer and carried around my jig rod with me every day to work. It was an 8ft stick with an old Penn jig master jr. I would stop by mission bay or San Diego Bay and throw that thing for hours. Like Ali says , Practice practice practice.

Perfect timing, I'm going out on a party boat first weekend in July and need to get my casting squared away before the trip. Thanks for the advice!

1 point to help anyone with birdnest, is to adjust the spool tension to the jig you are fishing, yes you will have to readjust as you changes jigs but it won't more than 30 sec. 🙂

I still remember begging to cast my dad's baitcaster for the first time. I just thought it looked way cooler than a spinning reel and one I said lemme try ur reel. I was maybe 9 or 10 at the time but whether he explained the thumb pressure thing to me or not, in my mind i understood the mechanics. I don't know if you just tightened down the brake all the way or not but my very first time casting it it didn't go very far but I definitely didn't bird nest it my first cast lol ... I just understood that The spool cant turn fast than the line is going out. If u understand that, u'll automatically know how much pressure to apply by how hard u throw ur rod. Once u learn, it's 100% muscle memory. The only tip I have is make sure u wet ur spool or ur thumb before ur first cast if the day. I remember burning the hell outta my thumb cuz my spool didn't have a drop of water in it and it was my first cast 🤣 I was even using plastic line too lol

If your on a sport boat don't ever swing out your iron...Drop to your heel and swing over your head...Heel to head..Always watch your lure and what is happening on the deck...never take your eyes off your iron...

Can you use a 9ft rod like that for knife jigs as well? Good long fore grip looks like you could use on the rail as well.

You could but a shorter, jigging rod will be much less tiring to work.

I have an irrationally hard time casting with the jig all the way down to the handle. I’ve always cast with only like 24 to 36 inches of line out from the top and it’s a hard habit to break.

It's easier to control with a shorter lead, but you lose a lot of distance. Creep it longer as you get more comfortable.

What gear ratio do you like best for your 25n as a jig stick reel, the factory 6 to 1 or the 5.3 or 4.8?

6 to 1.

Short mono/floro top shot? I was under the assumption 100 yds 40lb mono on top

That's the old school way and it is easier to learn with. Most guys have converted to short top shots now. Longer casts for sure.
