Awesome video. Gonna use this when I get home to break down this exact same reel I recently acquired and see what condition is in. Super information.

This is a good video. I finally was able to see exactly how the parts go together involving the anti reverse pawl and spring. Thank you for making this video. It helped me out.

Is the 109 stronger , cheaper , special application VS the 9 ??? why not just make them all disconnect handle ??? Thanks 2nd Chance Tackle !!!

The 109 was the original and it has a different design than the 9. This 109 is a knuckleduster reel that has a handle that spins backwards. The model 9 took the Frame and size from the 109, but updated the internals to include the more traditional bridge and free spool release. Thanks for asking - Dennis

To grease or oil or use nothing is dependent on the type of washers. Fabric washers get grease. Felt washer get oil, teflon or plastic washers are non absorbent and do not get lubricated. Carbontex washers are optional - no grease or just a light coating that is wiped dry. Thanks for asking - Dennis

So u have helped me so much. I just repaired a 109 for my friend. His grandpa left him. He has an ocean city 112. I can’t find much on it. It has his great grandads name carved into it. Have u had a video on that? He carved 1945 on the side. Could it be that old? I can try to send a pic if that sounds true. I’ve also hot rodded a penn 6/0 thanks to u. Thanks

Yes, it can be that old. The reels came out in the 1930s and were produced through the late 1950s. I did a video on how to service them. You can watch it here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jLiFDXc54Nw.html. There were a few changes through the years, but this should help guide you. Thanks for asking - Dennis

What sort of tool should one use to inject oil through the oil ports on these Penn reels? I've tried to use a needle bottle but I never seem to be able to actually get much (if any) oil into the reel.

I use the same needle oiler that you are trying. Many of the ports will not take a lot of oil.

Hi Dennis, Just when I think I knew all the answers about Penn dog and spring combinations you and the 109 change the questions !!??! Really enjoyed this one. The volume seemed a little low on this one for some reason? Great video overall, Thanks. Best Wishes, Cons

Thanks for the note Cons - this is one of the most confused models with folks. They make the mistake of thinking the 109 is the mini 209 and that is not the case. The mini 209 is actually the model 9 - I always get notes asking what is wrong with their 109 as the handle spins backwards - Dennis

The more I see all these conventional reels the more I wish I could use them but my vision won’t let me do that. I got the 488 today and it is indeed beautiful. I put that rotor brake pad on the bail release mechanism and put a new clicker spring on the spool in addition to switching out that ball bearing retainer with the bail trip ramp. Now it is like brand new. Thanks so much with helping out with all that. You, more than anyone, know how much I love these great saltwater Mitchells. I got a very nice 306 today with the box and papers. Is is very stiff from being overloaded with grease but I think it will be very nice when I’m done with it. I completed my collection of the Shakespeare 2700 spinning reel series with a 2701 that came in today. I’m looking forward to getting that Daiwa Sport 1960s reel that I showed you. Take care Dennis! I’ll be leaving on a trip next week. --- Chris

@@2ndChanceTackle it is perhaps the best of my 488s. I never thought I’d get 4 of them. I think I’m building mu own saltwater Mitchell museum.
