BB, That is a “fair” review of the Penn Pursuit in my opinion... I am not a tester or expert, but I have used spinning reels here on the gulf coast since I was 5 years old. That translates to > 55 years. I graduated from a Zebco 33 to a Mitchell 300. (Still have one of those old Mitchell 300s. Right handed cast / left handed crank seemed natural for me. Until recently I used spinning reels as disposables. Use to failure point and replace. Several (various maker / models) lasted many years. One of my all time favorite rigs (Abu Garcia Reel / 10ft Eagle claw medium heavy rod) was pulled overboard at middle bay light around 1980. That rig had layer waste to large Mahi, Mangrove Snapper, Kings, Jack Cavalier, Bull Red, Black drum... I would likely still have it. By the way... Graphite is a superior material and should hold up to all normal wear and tear. Like you shared, the drag system is Penn’s best. I bumped up to the 6000 size for set rods so that I had Bull Reds, Big Uglies, and nuisance Cow Nose Rays covered. However, my 4000s have been exposed to all such and faired well. The 6000 allows me Togo up to 30lb braid. Paired with 12 ft rods and 4 oz weight, I can get a lot of distance casting. Getting out past the cow nose is important to me. Bottom line... high use folks like yourself are qualified to critique tackle and are high frequency users. Most general public, occasional users, would do well to listen. This line of Penn reel is a cost effective choice. By he way... the 6000s I got were cheaper than the 4000s. Volume and popularity.... supply and demand. Best BB!
Thanks so much! I can’t imagine the amount of changes you have seen in reels over the years. I do have a Penn Battle 6000 that I use a lot, and the 6000 is a great size for those bigger fish we catch in the surf!
I have one of these. Very smooth for the price. I will say they are not the same size as other 4000 size reels I have, these are a little smaller. Next to my older Daiwa 4000, the Penn looks like a 2500 size reel. Good for small to medium fish. No worries yet.
I've had bad luck with these lower end Penn reels. My last Penn fierce2- 4000 barely lasted 15 hrs. of use. You get what you pay for. I just picked up the 11' Penn surf rod & reel combo from Bass Pro. Haven't used it yet, but lets see how that holds up...
What's up brother, got the pursuit works pretty damn good on the surf.Haven't had no problems with it.I fish in Port Aransas, Tx.Caught some giant red drum with it.👍👍👍🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟
I've been using the pursuit III 2500 for 10 months or so to catch bait (everything from baby goatfish in 20 ft to mackerel scad in 80+ feet), baby GTs, and the occasional bonefish off the kayak and it's still at least functional (I think that's saying a lot considering how much salt this thing's been dunked in). I did have to clean rust from the anti reverse clutch springs (I think they're called?) a couple times with a Q tip and some corrosion X, and the pitting on the main gear is starting to get worse. It definitely is not happy anymore when cranking under any kind of load. However, for 30 something bucks or w/e I paid at the time, seems like it was worth it.
How did you get the braid to evenly lay on the spool? I’ve tried shimming the spool to the point where the clicker doesn’t even make contact with the gear on the shaft and it still stacks line at the top of the spool like it’s not going high enough on the upward stroke.
This is the third fierce series reel combo ur2.pl/2314 I've bought and I can't say enough about the value. I work these reels and rods pretty hard because I fish several times a week on Jetties and in the surf, so they can beat up but they've never let me down and are easy to maintain. Great value!
I’ve not owned a fierce, but the main different between the 2 is the full metal body on the fierce where as the pursuit is a composite. What kind of fishing will you be doing mostly?
Good review Brad. I’m not clear on the order of good, better best on Penn line. I’ve got a couple of Battle II (4000 & 5000) and think they are salt-water approved. Could you clarify please?
The order is the Wrath, Pursuit, fierce, battle, spinfisher and slammer. The spinfisher and slammer are the only 2 that are fully sealed. The Battle II is a great reel. I have one as well. It does have a metal frame which helps a lot with durability. It also has sealed bearings which is a huge benefit for saltwater fishing.
Hi there. Great video. I have a question. I bought the 2500 combo it’s amazing so far. I’ve had it for about 2 months. I dnt like huge spinning reels what are the dimensions on the 4000? I’ve been thinking of getting the 4000 combo as well.
Question: both the PENN PURSUIT III 3k & 4k combos cost the same. I mostly fish for Cats & red fish in Texas. Which would you recommend. One has a med/light and the other is a Med/Med 7' rod.
What size would you get for a Ugly Stik GX2 6'6"? Is the 4000 too beefy? I've been watching every video seeing if it looks too large. I'm freshwater fishing for everything up here in Ohio
@@BeardedBrad92 I ordered a 4000 before I saw your comment. I hope it's not too big for the rod. I'm using it for catfishing mostly. I have Ambassadeur's, but I had an Ugly Stik spinning rod I needed a reel for. Hopefully it's not too big
It won’t be too big. Main reason for going to a bigger size reel is lime capacity and drag. If you can get away with smaller reel it just helps on the weight. 4000 will be just fine, just a little heavier
Hi. Looking into getting a pursuit. I’m going to be staying at a vacation home that’s on the bay. We are allowed to fish out back. What size reel would you recommend in this reel? Thanks
I think the 4000 size is a good size. It’s light enough that you can throw kites and not wear yourself out too quick but it’s also got enough drag and line capacity to fish for black drum and red fish
Bravo how do you plan on using the reel the most? 5000 will be fine for throwing set rigs. If you do any inshore fishing throwing artificials, then 5000 is going to be a little heavy
Bearded Brad I plan on doing both. I have a 6000 conflict. With your help, I’ll be using the 6000 for a set rig and getting a 4000 for artificial. Thanks helping me make sense of it. Now to find a rod for them both
I have mine in 2500 size about 7 months was using it for small river tarpon and freshwater snook with no problems, later I decided to use it for saltwater and I catch big Jack crevell 10lb+ and performs awesome the handle got too heavy but with some drops of silicone lube like new again, I'm planning tu buy the 4000 one, you think it works well for me if I use it for tarpon over 50lb??????
i been wanting a really nice spinning reel for awhile now i seen this on academy.com so i searche don youtube and i seen one other youtuber angler mention this reel was highly recommended and was a very nice smooth reel so i bought it on academy.com and youre now the 2nd youtube angler to tell me this is definitely worth the $50 and that for $50 its a ver good reel and not to mention its a really nice reel. i fish lot for bass and channel catfish so im glad i purchased the size 40 of this reel. thanks for this vid man please do keep up the good work
@@BeardedBrad92 you're absolutely welcome. im glad to know that its not just me but a lotta guys and anglers love this reel so in a few days when it gets to me im def gonna wanna spend time to break it in. i also am glad you mentioned size 4000 is in the middle just what i needed
@@BeardedBrad92 i will def let you know how i love it after i use it and i think what i'll do is i'll the link to this vid in m description box so my viewers can come and see this then maybe they to might feel like buying this ima def shout you out
@@BeardedBrad92 so i tried out the reel and im keeping it. works great and perfect i noticed that the reel i got academy sent me is a 6:2.1 gear ratio when i thought i bought a 5:2.1 gear ratio lols but either its great and im really glad i found this vid.
@@BeardedBrad92 in California I do a ton of Pier and jetty fishing. Also surf fish for perch. I have a 7'2 MH fast action rod that I want to get a feel for. Someone told me to get a 2500-3000
I have multiple setups depending on what I’m doing. For surf fishing I like using 9’-10’ rods. I really like Star rods. I have 10’ med/hvy and a 9’ medium that I use surf fishing. I have a 8’ med/hvy that I use for throwing heavier spoons and big poppers. The have a 4000 size reel on each of those.
Yes I have the combo. Not crazy about the rod, but I still use it from time to time. I use a 7’ Fenwick Medium action most of the time when throwing lures
@@BeardedBrad92 ok thankyou. do you think the Penn pursuit 3 rod and reel combo is good for $65 or could you recommend any rod and reel combos under $70 pls
@@BeardedBrad92 ok nice. If I use like small 3 inch swibaits, gotchas, mirrodines, rapala lures, and spook Jr would the medium rod 4000 reel work on those or would it not have that much good of an action?
@@BeardedBrad92 Love the 9ft GX2s! I have two, both with 2500 Pursuit 3’s and 10lbs braid. Caught a 41” bull red on it in the surf. Took a while to fight, but really fun. Berrypro makes a heavy 10’6” steelhead rod and I am thinking about getting a 4000 pursuit 3 to pair with it. Have you heard anything about Berrypro?
