On my 4300SS the screw he installed to hold the crosswind arm to the spool shaft (15:59) goes on the line spool (clicker spring screw). The crosswind arm screw is longer to go through both sides of the crosswind arm saddle and has a smaller head. I checked my spare line spool to verify. Edit: you can see it during the disassembly too, so who ever worked on it previously used the wrong screw. The owner doesn't know it but he's opened up the threads on the crosswind arm to accommodate the screw. Just one side because it's not long enough to go through both sides.

Well, the installation of the proper drag washer which was keyed did the trick. Lesson learned: pull on line to test the smoothness of the drag. Make sure to consult the schematic for missing parts if one is available.

At the end of the video, you accidentally said Mitchell reel instead of Penn reel. However, you did a great job in cleaning and lubricating the reel. Thanks!

My bad - I call a lot of things wrong - springs are screws and screws are springs and screws are nuts and I guess Penns are Mitchells - Thanks Terry - Dennis

These are great reels and command a high price on the collector market. The later reels were made in China and were graphite(ssg) I have multiple ssg's and have had no problems ever with them. Still can't beat the good old USA reels though! Thanks Dennis I enjoy your channel and thanks for the hard work!

You are welcome Mike. The older spin fishers are built to last. Most are a little noisy now, but nothing a new bearing can't fix. I just did the 420 and 430 and 712Z in addition to the one I posted. All are nice, solid survivors. - I plan to post the 420 soon - Dennis

In the schematic shown at the beginning of the video, there is no Teflon washer under the metal drag washer (#57, part #057 716). After I gave my friend the reel, I felt very embarrassed when he showed me that the spool got harder to turn, as he pulled line off the spool. I had tested for drag tightening, but no spool turning via pulling the fishing line. Upon removal of the drag nut, I noticed there was no metal washer on top of HT-100 washer. The Mysticparts associate also confirmed that the Teflon washer was not needed. Did the Teflon washer provided made a better drag system, or the owner liked using it? Happy and safe holidays to all.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 2 года назад
That teflon washer should smooth operation not impact it. The spool could tighten without it as the turning would clamp down the adjuster knob. Not sure what was done with this one previously - Dennis

Yesterday, I serviced one for a friend. The slider knob for the anti-reverse system was/is welded. Penetrating oil did not help. Next option is to drive a pin out inside of the reel. I am wondering if there is enough room to drive the pin completely out to remove the slider and do a better cleaning. The reel turns in the right direction. I wonder if I should leave it alone. Thanks in advance for your advise.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 2 года назад
You risk more than the reward. I would leave it alone if the anti-reverse is holding. If you try to drive it out, you may damage parts that are no longer available and then you would have nothing but junk - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle Thank you for your reply. I agree, especially since it works on the right direction.

Progress report: An overnight soak helped the slider to move. It is still tight and hard to move, but it can be moved.

Just grab the pin with small needle nose pliers and pull it out. You might have to reach behind the pin with a hook pick and pry it gently up so you have enough to grab the end.

Great video. Not familiar with this reel series. I like the fact that they were made in USA. I’m not very fond of the Chinese made Penns particularly with the first reels for Penn made in China. Just wanted to tell you I just acquired a mint Mitchell 396 PUM. Wanted a 498 but this one was so gorgeous I couldn’t resist it. I have now pretty much completed what I wanted to collect from the vintage Mitchell’s - 12 reels in total. Gotta stop sometime! Been a banner month for a collector besides tomorrow is my birthday.

@@mikemcelveen2973 i love the Mitchells too! Just finished restoring a 402 last night and it is sweet! The 396 was sold by the same person on eBay if. It is the blue/gray one i saw. Both reels did not go cheap! The 396 went for the most. I loved that 498 but it was the wrong hand for me.

@@2ndChanceTackle Dennis, if Mike is referring to the reel i think he is, i've seen two of them on eBay with one selling for $125.00 this very afternoon. It was wrong handed for me (499) so i didn' t bid on it. The 396 i got cost even more yet still less than half what others i've seen cost on eBay. I am stopping this madness for a while. Honestly i think i'm getting addicted. Anyway i have enough Mitchell reels!

Dennis, thanks for the video. I just ordered a click spring and a fiber drag washer for my two 4300 ss’s. Noticed in your video the reel you cleaned had a Teflon washer also. My reals didn’t have that. Is that needed? Also how much to service and check my reels and turn around time. Thanks Ron

The Teflon washer is on the back side of the line spool. It's not part of the drag stack on the top side.

Yet another great tutorial. I have a question Dennis, do you grease felt drag washers? Or simply oil them?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 года назад
I oil the felt washers. Grease can bog them down and result in tears. Oil is lighter and does not hold debris as much, but it does evaporate quicker - Thanks for asking - Dennis

I have a 4400 ss. I assume that they are basically the same????
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 года назад
They are not. The design of the two differ. The 4300 and the 4200 are the same, but Penn changed the anti-reverse set up on the bigger 4400 and above reels. The 4300 has an anti-reverse dog in the cast that intersects with the main gear. Your 440o has the anti-reverse set up under the rotor and utilizes a friction dog set up to the A/R - Dennis

The spool removes like a Mitchell 300, I’ve not seen a Penn do that before that would remind me of a Mitchell no matter what
