I did full restore of this reel including full respray and its looking brand new again but for some reason when turning spool the handle feels heavy, i done all usually checks like clutch (which is new with new spool) cannot see the reason why.
This reel reminds me of my Daiwa Emblem X 5500T Longcast reel. It also has a worm gear oscillation system. That Daiwa is just as big as this Penn and is also called a pit or carp reel. Of course my Daiwa does not have an AR clutch. I’m glad you found the problem with this Penn. I finished working on that 1961 Spinfisher 700 first edition reel a little while ago. I had a hard time getting the rotor off but after trying a number of things I finally got it off. The bearing and pinion came out easily but the bearing would not separate from the pinion. It was working very well so I just left it there and lubricated it as it was. The reel has some paint damage on the outside of the rotor but the rest of the reel is in very nice shape. The green handle on this reel is actually in a little better condition than my other reel like this. On a shelf in my study I have the first Penn Spinfisher 700 greenie from 1961 and the last reel using this basic design - the 706Z. In my collection I have all the 700 reels that came after this first 700 through all the versions of the 704 greenies and ending with the black and gold 704 and 706 Z reels. It’s like being in a little Penn Spinning Reel Museum. Great diagnostic video Dennis. I look forward to your next video on this reel when you get the parts. - Chris
They are alike. This one is very solid, particularly with the metal case. This one has taken a beating, that's for sure. Good luck with the 700 and your Penn Museum
It is probably a broken piece inside the rotor cavity where the bail arm connects. There is a plastic piece that looks like the #7 that often breaks and jams which stops the bail from opening. Remove the side cover by the bail arm and check that first - You may need to replace the part if broken - Dennis
Dennis, on one of your videos you used a long cue tip that had either wire or plastic brushes along the shaft. Please tell me the name of this cleaner and where I could find it. Thanks Brett Roberton
A viewer sent me those and unfortunately, I don't recall the brand or where to get them. Thanks for the note. Sorry I can't point your to a source - Dennis
