New ICAST introductions from Penn's Squall Series of reels. New 2 Speed models, new levelwind models, well priced, well designed and no doubt nice reels to own.
I mainly fish the good ole Atlantic Ocean but I live in range of the Chesapeake Bay. During the spring I troll the bay for big stripes bass and I bought 6 Squall 30LW's for it. Super simple for novices on the boat. The level wind mechanism makes knowing how much line you let out easy, just count the times it goes across. Cool little series of reels.
Bought the 30lw yesterday. Looks great value for money. Looks spot on for the Tope I'm after ( small hard running sharks in the 20-60lb bracket ). Thanks for the vid.
I fish on a boat that won't be able to stop for a while when trolling. I am thinking of purchasing the 50 due to the line capacity. What line setup would you recommend?
Hi, love the vids. The squall 30lw is about £30 more than a comparable Warfare here in the UK. Do you think the price difference is justified ? Does that £30 represent a good investment or is the difference not great between the range ?
+Rob Lawrie Yes I do, the Warefare reels are a budget piece, not nearly as good a reel. We do stock those, but I've not posted them on our site - CharkBait.com. Not really the same sort of animal.
I just got two Penn SQL 30LW Squall Level Wind Reels off eBay the Item specifics are a little better then the same size Penn Warfare 30. They both use same amount of line that was funny . The squall is only like $5 USD more. If you have no money get a Penn 309 it is the same size as a Penn SQL 30LW. I just do not like my Penn 309 at all.

Can do within the line test limitations of the mentioned reels. Realistically I'd fish the 50 at 80 lbs and the Fathom at 60 (in terms of the drag setting you should run, 30% of the line test at the tests mentioned). Many guys will opt for a true 50 class reel, the wide version often preferred given added line capacity. More often than not, 130# braid with 100-130# leader connected to your cable. For that kind of pressures, best to run an all metal reel rather than graphite framed like the Squall.
Mark Smith yeah I wanted the Fathom because of the full metal construction, but the Squall due to the high line capacity. Heard guys talking about reels flexing or blowing up when they're graphite, but never met anyone who has personally experienced it. A true 50w reel like a Penn international or Avet would be ideal, but unfortunately not in my price range right now which is why I'm stuck between the Fathom and Squall, I'm just a broke college kid looking to get into some sharks lol.

Hello Guys, I bought the 30VSW straight out of the box, and was retreiving with a 24oz sinker with no fish on the low speed, and for some reason the gear would slip... not the spool, the gear or what holds the gear in place, its like you retreiving and suddenly the leaver would jump and inch then retreive smoothly then would jump again, can anyone here tell me what would have caused this?
I can't be certain what's happening from description. First thought was improper braid spooling, slipping on spool itself under load. But, it sounds like perhaps anti-reverse not engaging, but with gear moving/jumping, really clueless from here. I'm not a gear head however, someone else may have much better understanding than I.
@@CharkBaitUSA Thanks for the response... I did contact the Tackle Shop and they had their service guys look at it. They decided to change out a few parts on the gear side just as a precaution... but the problem persists.. to better explain think about if the gear had a few teeth mising on after the other... so when the mechanism reaches that spot because there are no teeth there will be a jump to the next available set of teeth, that is the best way of explaining it...I forgot to mention that I am in the Caribbean, so sending the reel back to the Tackle Shop here then they will have to send it back to their supplier in the US...just a task in my view... I am mechanically sound so if someone could guide me on what is or could be the problem, then I can order the parts and repair the reel myself..
@@anthonybryan9082 - Sure seems like something not engaging, but already changing out parts indicates that either there was some serious defect in assembly OR the repair shop wasn't sure themselves...and the problem persists. The slip you mentioned or lag, that's something common with two speed gear when changing speeds. The gear change needs to happen when there's not a load on the reel, then the gears can mesh. But, to slip as described, I'm thinking something else involved and really I'm clueless - but no gear-head myself... Sorry I can't help more, will ask others and if another here can assist will post.

I had a 24oz sinker with no fish and retrieving around 300Ft of line..hence the reason I wanted to double up on the speed...I saw on Amazon where 2 people mentioned this problem but so far there doesn't seem to be a fix...So I am hoping someone out there has had this reel and this problem and has had it repaired
