Penn State University - 4 Things I Wish I Knew Before Attending

www.gobeyondthebrochure.com/4-... - When I started my college experience, I selected Pennsylvania State University to start out. I did end up transferring, so here are some things that may have been useful to understand prior to going to PSU as a freshman. Two words. Penn State freshman Greek life. Legacy and tradition are rooted in brotherhood and sisterhood at PSU, my friends. Brace yourselves, because especially as a freshman, chances are high you are going to be spending a lot of time as a frat rat whether or not you are officially in a sorority or fraternity or not.

It's also not true that there is no accountability with large classes, I was there almost 10 years ago now. We had clickers with an ID registered to us. We used them to check into class, take quizzes, and also for questions and polls. They were a part of your class participation grade - also usually we had TAs and groups so you can still get help or even meet with the professor to ask questions if needed. Also the frat thing may be a big part of PSU. But I literally never went to a Greek party, didn't know a single person involved in Greek life - and it literally had nothing to do with my PSU experience... We mostly hung at houses, went to shows, chilled at Websters (book store), Chronic Town (hookah lounge), and shows at the state theater & at the time levels, or played pool at Zenos or Sharkies. We all still got great educations - we had study sessions at our houses and had cookouts..and a lot of the people in my major didn't party at all, not ever. Penn state also has an awesome art program and amazing arts fest in the summer, it's also got some. Of the most stunning lakes and mountains and hikes - I reccomend having a car, and spending your summers there. Going to Pine Grove Furnace State Park on summer days and swimming at the beach with my dog are some of my fondest memories in life. Sunday coffees outside at Cafe Lemont. And trips to Bald Eagle State Park, camping at Huntington lake. Central PA is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been... And I live in maui.

Great advice. I absolutely loved living in the dorms and even got involved 20 years after graduation, but if you don't have some kind of connection to PSU, direct or indirect, living there and having fun will be more of a challenge.

As a local, my life basically revolves around the university and I’m only in high school.you will not go a day without seeing a penn state logo. That is a promise. But living here is great, because you will always have a sports team to watch because of the town having a minor league baseball team. It’s fun.

It's hard to watch this video because it's different from my experience becoming one 30 years ago. It's someone else's experience. I see the campus at least once a year as I pass on the highway but visit with my in laws instead who live in State College. It's been 20 years since I have been downtown and even longer since I was on campus. I also went to Mont Alto a long time ago and it was a different place. I liked University Park better than Mont Alto because I felt like a Penn Stater. One of the best experiences at UP was meeting my wife. The truth is it wasn't for everyone and eventually the partying got old. I did both UP and Mont Alto. Both were markedly different. At Mont Alto, there were always the same people. The campus was quiet as people went home on the weekends. We felt like second class students. Facilities like gyms were locked. We had a Weekly Collegian. Without a car, you were stuck there unless you knew someone who had a car. Now that Mont Alto is 4 year, I would not have gone there today. There are other changes as an alumnus I am not happy with. Getting rid of "Freshman" and the other grades that followed are ridiculous. Dorms being Freshman only are ridiculous. You are on your own as an upperclassman for housing. This is someone else's experience and not mine.

I had gone up there a long time ago back in my youth for a tour. I stayed a few days. A few things that I might add are: The campus is really remote. It seemed like it took forever as we drove up the mountains to get there. This could be ideal for someone looking to get away. In my case I liked a city location better so that's where I ended up. Also being in the mountains the weather is chilly up there with plenty of snow. The campus is big. Way too big for my parents to even consider walking so we did mostly a bus tour. Classrooms are large but was not a deal breaker for me. I can do well in either large or small classes. A big plus is that the campus is great for sports and working out. If you like physical fitness this is a great place. There are plenty of intramural teams and others to workout with. He mentioned the PSU culture is rampant in in the nearby towns. Yep, but that could be a positive or negative. He also mentioned the beer and drinking parties. That is true but the town doesn't offer much else to do. And we all know that this stuff goes on at most colleges but PSU does get mentioned in most party school surveys. I also would say that academics are solid. It's not Ivy League top 10 academics but most of the programs up there are certainly Top 50. And certainly on the level of MSU, Rutgers, UMaryland and other big state schools.

I go up there at least once a year to play golf. There are some nice nearby golf courses. I have also heard that PSU's golf maintenance degree is ranked #1. That can actually be a good paying career when golf is booming. Additionally PSU also has other top ranked program. Our weatherman on local TV says PSU is #1 in his field.

Yes, where I went to school in Philly there are no mountains. The best backdrop would be the downtown office towers. However since I left, the school has created some beautiful gardens and plazas almost like a slice of suburbia in the city. It's a big improvement since my days. A suburban school such as Maryland could also be an option. However the suburban traffic is terrible. PSU's rural location certainly has it's strong points. My nephew got busted for underage drinking last year at PSU. His parents had to go up there it was a big deal. He said that there is nothing to do but go to parties and drink. Hopefully he has not developed a drinking problem. He wants to transfer to an HBCU. I am not sure if he will go thru with it.

I was there from 1975 to 1978, and they were the best. All you need is a GPA of 2.5, not a 4.0. Have a great time because you only have this time of your life ONCE. Trust me. My memories of 40+ years ago are so fresh because I had a great time. Remember, I had no internet, or cell phone and everything was so much more simple. No regrets whatsoever. Wouldn't change a thing.

As an “old time” graduate (1965-66) I have been stunned over the last ten years. In the world today, THE UNIVERSITY has shown hesitancy, poor judgment, and lack of sensitivity. We have lost the integrity that was evident years ago. Now, money is all!

Not everyone had the same experience at Penn State you did. My experience had different origins than yours. Mine was the result of standing up to hazing at another school. Having done both branch and UP campuses, I have to say there were some negatives. Image and entitlement were king. A sense of superiority and status permeated some of the people there. You had to like Joe Paterno and if you didn't like football, you were weird. I met Joe Paterno before the scandal and didn't like him. He was an ass. Then there was the attitude you had to pledge. Some people thought you were beneath them if you didn't come from money. It was hard for you to be yourself when people wanted you to be like them in order to be accepted. My running joke was that it was high school plus 4. What makes it right to say you belong at PSU and others don't? It's sort of refuting my comment.
