penny and gang sit and watch NCIS to see her scene only to find out that she has been cut out of it, leonard ties to help makes it worse no copyright intended, entertainment reasons only
While tat is true you don't say that to someone who is already feeling rock bottom. You say that cold hard fact when they are in a more stable state of mind. This kinda rubbing salt in the wound for Penny.
She's naive, she's your typical popular high school girl trope, she was just unaware of the reality. I mean a waitress? That was her job, a waitress, she had her acting career but that didn't go anywhere. At least Christopher's acting career went well for him. He didn't quit because it didn't lead to nowhere, he was asked to leave because he's been doing it quite some time. Unlike Penny, Christopher had many acting roles, several hygiene, razor, and food commercials. He may not had a main role in TV shows but at least he appeared as a background character in them.
@@antondegroot6061 Not really, there's only 1700 players in the NFL for example, how many athletically gifted people do you think got passed up for those mere 1700?
@@VindexSolis it's not literally 1 million to 1. For it to be one million to one, if we assume your number (1700), there would have to be 1.7 billion people interested in a career as an NFL player. Not only that but the number 1700 is incorrect, there are roughly 1700 players active on NFL rosters during the season (53 per team), however that's not accounting for practice squad for example, during preseason there are 90 players per team, which would make that number 2880. Plus, there is a very high rotation in the NFL, yes there are players that play over a decade in the league but that's not the norm, on average an NFL player's career lasts 3 season, most of the players are out of the league by their third season and there are hundreds of new players that enter through the draft every year. However, with that being said, I agree in the figurative connotation of the phrase that a person's chance to make it in the NFL is "a million to one," and I do agree that people should be made aware of that just like in the video Leonard made Penny aware of how low the chances of succeeding in Hollywood really are.
Barbie Lee Hans Gruber from Die Hard. The Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Snape from Harry Potter. Judge Turpin from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. You'd probably know him if you saw him. His voice is unmistakable.
Actually, I think you can make a strong case for the fact that Penny is the most important character on the show. Every character that interacts with her comes out for the better. Sheldon learned to moderate his anit-social impulses and establish contact with others because of her. Raj got to the point of being able to talk to women without alcohol because of her acceptance of him as a trusted friend. Amy is clearly becoming more self-confident having Penny as a friend. Leonard has grown emotionally every season because of her. Just a thought...
And she got Howard with Bernadette, discovered how Raj could speak to women with alcohol, she was the first one Raj could speak to and convinced Sheldon to man up and be Amy's boyfriend.
If you think about it, the series is really "about" Leonard and Penny, with Sheldon as their "wacky neighbor." But it's done subtly enough that you don't notice.
+xntric49 Yes, she is a very important character but I'd say the main one is Leonard, it was him that got all these people together, he was friends with Howard and Raj, was roommates with Sheldon and he approached Penny. Sheldon is the Icon, Leonard the Glue and Penny the evolver? I dunno, something like that.
***** Yes, you're right, and there's no argument that Sheldon is the superstar. But here's my belief: A less funny Sheldon would just be a less funny Sheldon, but a miscast Penny would have made the whole thing fall apart. We have to believe she's hawt and way out of Leonard's league, but we also have to believe her life is a mess and that her eventual pairing with Leonard is realistic after all. She, and they, pull it off perfectly. Of course, I'm talking about the first six or seven seasons, not the seasons we're in now that are just stretching things out for more money. The show should have ended with a happy wedding for Leonard and Penny, and it should have ended two seasons ago.
Honestly ,I'm surprised that it took this long for anyone to tell her that acting wasn't going to happen. If she's been at this for over 5 years and hasn't gotten one role, then it ain't gonna happen. Leonard for telling her the truth is probably the best thing for her , since she isn't getting any younger and its time to face the real world while she has a chance to live a good life in it. We all get older and we all have to face reality at some point, even though it's sad and we hate it more than anything else imaginable we can't live in a dream forever and we gotta wake up sometime.
I agree, and I would also add she's quite lazy and unmotivated. not like she was really putting her heart and soul into it. And she's acting like it's a shock to her when Leonard said it's a small chance, I would have thought that was obvious from day 1
@David Stephens actually they didnt, there might be a few scenes inspired, but on the whole friends was orignal and the best sitcom. P.s I love the big bang theory, but friends forever.
Have to agree with Leonard here. I understand how hard it must be for Penny to hear this, especially from her boyfriend, but someone had to give her a reality check at some point. He's right on many fronts and it's high time that she realize it.
I believe that you should always encourage people to follow their dreams and let the circumstances be the ones that judges if they're ready or not. It's better for them to realize these things on their own, not by someone's opinion, specially if that someone is special to them, their opinion means a lot and if you realize they don't believe in your dream it becomes more personal than objective.
Denics well that's true unless the person demands that you be honest with them. Penny demanded honesty, he gave it to her and she couldn't handle it. Truth hurts, what Leonard said was true and it was high time she heard it. If I can avoid disappointment by someone telling me the honest truth I will not be arrogant enough to write them off. Often times it's better to go to the school of instruction instead of the school of hard knocks. You need to know the pros and cons honestly of what you getting into before just jumping in head first. I'll support my significant other's decisions in anything and she knows that and she also know I will give my honest opinion and the pros and cons of it. She unlike Penny can handle the truth cause she knows it does not mean I don't support her or that she's incapable of doing it. Penny and Leonard still had some growing in their relationship to do in this time. Eventually Penny will learn Leonard supports her no matter what regardless.
I get that, but everybody has unrealistic childhood dreams, and for your hopes about those dreams to be raised, and then so cruelly and unexpectedly crushed is devastating, and I don't think that calls for a reality check. When you are broaching a sensitive topic with someone who is already upset, it pays to be tactful, and there were ways to say what Leonard said without hurting Penny like that.
Alex Severinski she wanted comfort lol, why do so many people love to beat Penny down so much even when her reactions to certain situations are completely understandable?
Dane Youssef that’s not even what I said. Penny is not a bad person for wanting to believe the lie that she is a good actress because she loves acting. Get off your high horse, nobody’s perfect and that includes you.
@@graffititurtle11 Boy, you have more than your share of flaws. One of which is your own inability to comprehend someone else's words yourself. She IS a solid actress--but the talent pool has an overflow bigger than the ocean. The point is she asks for something in particular--she gets it, and of course--guns down the messenger.
For women in particular, finding success as an actor is incredibly difficult. If Penny can't do it once she hits her 30s, she's pretty much done. She needed a reality check. Leonard was in the right here.
If penny is relying on her beauty to get an acting job then yeah, once she hits her 30s it becomes a bit more difficult. Not if she was genuinely talented.
Guys lose their looks by the time they reach their 30s but somehow that doesn’t matter for them. Double standard. Or we’re all supposed to be seeing the world through the eyes of men.
Penny: Give me your 100%-honest opinion Leonard Honestly? Penny: Yes, honestly! _Leonard telling her his honest opinion_ Penny: How could you say that!!!
@@after_midnight9592 its not a woman thing, people just wanna hear supportive thing when they are going through a rough patch, regardless if its true. There is a deluded idea going around that men are likely to accept reality much better then women.
As long as she got paid, I'd call that a win. In an over saturated, cut throat, predator filled industry like show business, getting out with a cheque in one hand and your dignity and self-respect in the other is literally the best you can realistically hope for, even if you scene gets cut. I mean, Penny should take comfort in the fact that the show that cut her literally paid her for nothing.
What good is getting paid once if she doesn't get publicity? Getting paid once doesn't really matter if no one knows who you are and therefore you don't get anymore jobs.
@@nathanevans1382 Considering that she was playing a corpse and didn't even have a 'got killed in a flashback' scene, I don't think there was much 'publicity' to be had.
I really think Penny is being unfair. I do think that Leonard messed up a little bit with what he said at 2:26 and any other unnecessary slips, but as far as his honest opinion goes, he's a smart guy, and Penny's odds are low. The belief that Penny wouldn't be a tv/movie star with awards is rational, and that opinion is probably the same with the other five in the group of friends. Was he supposed to lie? If yes, what would be the point of Penny asking that question if the only answer she would accept is yes. Also, is Leonard supposed to potentially have a negative effect on Penny's life decisions just to make her temporarily feel better?
What he did wasn't wrong at all she asked for his honest opinion and he gave it. It just she was a emotional at the time so she couldn't handle lenord not beleiving in her.
Never thought of it: While the discussion at the end is extremly heated, it basically is a 'discussion' between two actors who actually did exactly that - they "won the lottery" and earned millions through TBBT (though Kaley Cuoco definetly had a bigger breakthrough).
"I'm sorry you got cut off but don't beat yourself up too much. Let's face reality that Hollywood is a very tough and competitive environment especially for aspiring actresses. But, look. Penny, do I believe you're talented? Yes. I believe you will have a successful and long career as an actress. You might not win awards or be the most famous actress there is but I want to let you know that I will always be proud of you for what you are trying to accomplish. There will be other parts for you and when that presents itself, you just have to grab on to it and do your best. I love you, Penny. You know I'll always be there to support you. Through ups and downs." That is what I would've said to Penny if I were Leonard.
What Leonard said really hit home for me. I'm in Singapore and even though I've had lead parts in tv shows that were supposedly "larger productions", my career's nowhere the success that most people think it to be. And this is Singapore, for god's sake.
poor penny :( that sux big time. Even though Leonard is totally right and she knows that but it still really hurts to have your dreams crushed. I think it was bad timing on Leonard's part to tell her the truth. Should of waited a bit till she wasn't so emotional.
+Theresa Kim true but i was talking about them cutting her part. She was so excited and had all her family members and friends watch only to have it fail. sucks
It's so unfair that she asked for honesty, he gave it to her and she got upset that he said what he really though. No wonder people don't tell the truth.
She dropped her dream-- to sell pharmaceuticals. Was her dreams bringing money for her? No. But funny enough, her failure as an actress has made her a damn good sales rep. She makes more money than Leonard now. So why is Leonard being blamed for his honesty when she asked for it.
It's really relatable with real life actually, there are many people including the past me that can't handle when their dreams is unrealistic by the odds, yes there are people who can accomplished it, but there are more people who fail to accomplish their dreams and slammed by the reality to do something ordinary and not special at all. I know because I've been in that position and it took me almost 3 years to get up from those kind of nightmare.
Leonard had a point. Getting into acting is a 1 in a 1,000,000 chance. It's difficult for everyone and Penny needed to hear it. Why Penny got upset is beyond me. Maybe because it was the truth??? Also, I like how TBBT had an episode of NCIS in it and an episode of NCIS had an episode of TBBT in it. Plus, when Penny said to her Dad that she didn't need to come to LA to beat up Mark Harmon I laughed a little because the actor who portrays Penny's father (Kieth Carradine) was in an episode of NCIS.
Actually I think Sheldon would have done a better job at consoling her. Leonard means well but ends up being socially awkward and saying the wrong thing whereas Sheldon is soucally awkward about it consoling people, doesnt know what to say but just happens to end up saying the right thing. And he was socially "trained" by penny as well. Ofc it could be that people expect him to mess up and not say the right thing so arent disappointed by what they hear, or they dont want to shout at him when he's trying to help because they see him as childlike and treat him like a kid. Or because they know its hard for him abd uncomfortable so appreciate more that he's trying
I felt really bad for Penny in this episode and can actually relate somewhat. My sister and I were in an advert for our local library, they shot her in one scene and I was in several (nothing scripted, just us talking, reading, on the computer, etc.). We waited several months to see the final advert. When we finally saw it, my sister had been cut out completely and I barely made a cameo. We were both disappointed, but I felt worse for her. And sadly, Leonard is right about his honest opinion. He doesn't think Penny is talentless--on the contrary--but the truth is, it's very hard to be successful in life and get into careers like acting. It looks easy but the majority of people don't make it. It happens to a lot of talented people. Heck there are LOTS of talented people in acting who get little to no recognition or have short careers. It sucks but it's the reality :(
An ironic thing happened when that episode was filmed which Chuck Lorre talked about "in an after episode memoir thing, while filming that very episode there was a scene where Staurat and Raj we're supposed to be approached by a beautiful young woman asking for directions - played by Lexie Contursi - and they run off from her but they had to cut that scene to get the show down to the required run time
I tried writing a book I wrote a novel when I was 18 in hugh school worked so hard on it for over 4 to 5 years and I finally got it published in 2015 and well it didn't turn out the way I had hoped. No one bought it ajd my mom wrote a cute book before me and no one gave a damn. It's very hard that when u try hard for yourself and no one seems to care. I feel for penny here. She wanted ao much to be an actress and no one treated her right. Now she ends up being a sales woman for Bernedette
I always found it amusing how Penny made such a big deal about her mini-scene in Navy CIS that she even invited her friends over and her family in Nebraska invitied all of their relatives to watch the scene together. She would have been seen as an extra for only a few seconds but everyone acts like she played an important role in the show.
This reminds me of the actress, Polly Holliday - she got the part of Gloria Chaney in Mrs. Doubtfire, but she only had one scene and the rest were cut. She was probably so excited to land the role of the Hillard's nosey neighbour, only to find most of her parts deleted.
What Leonard says at the end that anyone making it as an actor/actress; the odds are a million-one. Yeah, but what about the people that do make it, sure some of them have to work and try really hard, but some who make it don't really have to try that hard sometimes, I mean some people who don't even have substantial experience make it, but then again, the effort in trying for the part is required and you always get accepted or rejected for a reason. The reason I'm saying this is because I've read about how some famous actors/actresses made it where they are today and where they started and for some of them; who didn't have a lot of experience in the business are more or less famous and successful to this day.
The thing that they are both missing here is the being an actor isn’t all about being in Hollywood blockbusters and massive hit tv show. It can be just about earring a little with small parts in films and roles in less well know stuff.
I'm sorry penny didn't get the part she hoped for but guess what - that's life. i wanted to be classical violinist and travel the world. but I'm: in a dead end job, hardly have any friends, most of my family don't talk to me/involve me in their lives/think I'm stupid, struggling with infertility, overweight, I've got a seizure condition, type 2 diabetes...the list goes on. you get my point: life's full of disappointments. you gotta pick up the pieces and move on. i know, easier said than done but life is tough. penny's got potential, a nice hard-working boyfriend who truly cares for her, close friends, she's attractive (in a nice way), and she's smart to an extent. penny needs to get her whiny, selfish butt off the couch and open her eyes to what she's already got.
The majority of people don't have tons of options out there. Yes, that might be true, but it's easy to get stuck in a rut when you don't see a lot of opportunity.
The problem is not what Leonard is saying but how he is saying. Yes, there is million to one chance for an person to become a successful actor or actress and it takes a huge amount of talent, hard work, sacrifice to do that. What Leonard said to Penny was logical and practical and to the point but, that's not what you say to the people when they are feeling low. Again it's not Leonard fault either cause he doesn't know all social norms and things people need to say each other in different situation. I feel sorry for both Leonard and Penny.
I'd say it has more to do with timing in this instance than anything. People tend to fall into 2 groups. WHAT to say and HOW to say. But there's more to it than that. 1. What you say 2. To whom you speak 3. Of whom you speak 4. How you say it 5. When you say it 6. Where you say it
Penny bases her assumptions on the premise that life is fair and everyone gets what they deserve. Even thou there's people out there exploited, ignored and unrecognized regardless how overqualified they are. Not to mention that the showbiz industry also tends to exaggerate, reward and glorify actors who lack any talent whatsoever.
He should have just been there for here then when she was upset and then later when she'd calmed down had a proper rational talk about it with her and let her decide if the struggle would be worth it in the long run, but be supportive regardless. He didn't say it correctly and he didn't say it at the right time.
I am not with Leonard for obvious reasons. He said Penny just got 3 lines anyway... what?? Is that something you're supposed to say to someone so close to you who has been struggling for 7 years to land even just a single scene in a TV show? Leonard was there from 1st episode and he knew how Penny wanted that shot! Whether Penny is naive or not talented enough, it doesn't matter - that is not the point. The point is he knew how difficult the journey was for Penny and how excited she was to just have those 3 lines in one episode of that show and to show that to his friends and family. Whether 3 lines or 1 line, it's a strand of hope for her and what did he do? He just shoved it out of sight like nothing. "Ahhh those are just 3 lines, you're not as talented as the other hopeful actresses anyway." Wow, what a douche.
Penny shouldn't have demanded honesty from him and then getting mad at him for being honest. Douchy move by her. Then again, I am not surprised Penny has always treated him like shit before and after the marriage, even when he has done so many things for her, trying to change himself for her etc. Leonard deserved better than Penny.
@@everythingisawesome2903 I agree. And for those who say that he does not support he acting endeavours, that is far from the truth. He bought he a second hand car so that she can go to job casting.
I really feel bad for Penny here and what Leonard said just made things worse. Just because Penny got cut out of an episode of CSI doesn't mean that it's the end. Lisa Kudrow got fired from Frasier and then got to be on Friends and, despite Leonard's scoffing, a guest role could lead to bigger things. The guy that played Miles on Lost got the job because of a guest starring role in the Sopranos. Yet, at the same time, I think Leonard said what he said because, deep down, he doesn't want Penny to become a famous actress because he's afraid that he'll leave her if she does. I'd also like to note that, despite Penny being the character least successful with her dream job in the show, Kaley Cuoco (sp?) is actually the most successful in her career out of all of the actors on the show.
Two things. I completely agree with Leonard. If you don't start out early. You probably need an edge and Penny has only been there for a few years. And three lines on NCIS probably wouldn't help that much. Two, Sheldon would have been better.
From what I heard, it’s a combo of luck + skill. Being talented isn’t enough; it’s also a matter of being in the right place at the right time. And there’s a **WIDE** variety of reasons why scenes get cut. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re a bad actor, sometimes the people in charge feel like the scene wasn’t necessary. Which, for actors trying to get their foot in the door (get noticed), can make them feel like they got screwed over. Which sucks, but it happens.
while i think leonard was wrong in how he tried to ‘comfort’ penny, i also think she was a little too harsh on him. i mean, she did ask for his honest opinion and then chatsised him for giving his honest opinion. but at the same time, leonard was a little harsh with his lack of belief in her. it can be tricky with managing being a supportive partner/friend towards someone trying to follow their dreams that might be a one in a million chance, but the way leonard reacted was like kicking penny when she was already down.
There's just one thing that I find extremely odd. Why didn't penny pick up on the idea of going to ComiCon with the guys. After all it would give her a chance to act a role in costume and meet with television celebrities directors writers and talent agents. Just one of those things that just raises a few questions particularly why wasn't it explored.
Since when do agents and producers go to Comic Con to hire new actresses? That's no casting, it's a fan convention where thousands of people dress up as their favorite characters.
Penny is very irrational here.. Leonard was speaking facts.. Maybe he should have rephrased his words but.. He is right. If she can't take any other answer apart from what she wants to hear.. That's being unrealistic
I watched this episode too many times and I hated the outcome and also the following episodes because her part was cut. Poor Penny. I doubt there’s an explanation on why that happened but if there is then can you dumb it down for me? I’ve been curious ever since I first watched that episode
Lenard was right, he told her at the wrong time though he should of waited when she wasn't feeling down...he should of waited when she was in a better mood...
George Pierson its from the episode where Benham Parsa steals a drone and has it 're-programmed' to kill people, he uses it to attack some important event, that leaves Delilah paralysed.
Lilymcd. 12 you mean colors. Just normal colors. Some of them happen to be in the rainbow, just like colors tend to be. But the rainbow has more than 5 colors.
Honestly, if they did make a Friends and Big Bang Theory crossover, this part of the episode would be a good placement for Joey to show up a an acting coach and help Penny. But that won’t happen except in fanfiction
The difference between Joey and Penny is that Joey loved acting. Even if he never got famous and just had to do weird plays, he would still do it. He worked really hard and acted in whatever he could to become an actor. Penny doesn’t have the same drive as Joey. She just wants to be famous.
