Pennsylvania Isn't What You Think It Is Anymore

Is Pennsylvania ALL crummy? Maybe not.
Part one: • Unboxing Pennsylvania:...
There’s a lot of history in Philadelphia. In fact, there’s been a lot of important historical events that have happened in this entire state! Pennsylvania served as one of our important hubs for spreading ideas and getting America all pumped about overthrowing British rule. Then, the state thrived, saw some really bad times in the mid 1900s, and is now trying to recover from it’s economic decline.
There’s a lot of interesting history in Pennsylvania, and some neat stuff that you probably didn’t know, too.
We’re going to look at all of that stuff and even meet some people who LIVE in Pennsylvania. It’s time for Cornerhouse Tales: Pennsylvania. The Rust Belt State.

I was raised in Bucks County and my wife and I were married by the mayor of Newtown. We saw first-hand the transformation of that part of the state into a bedroom community for people from as far away as New York City, who brought with them their brusqueness and Ill manners. As an example there was a small restaurant in town that used to serve breakfast but as it was small you used to have to wait maybe 15 or 20 minutes for a table. For a local this was no big deal - you would just grab a newspaper and read about the crime in Trenton. But for the new folks this was intolerable and there was a lot of yelling. I used to ask people why they moved to the area and they said for the peace and quiet.

Newtown is caught in a complicated location. In the Philly area, but pretty far out. Close but not too close to Trenton. On the side of the Philly burbs that points out towards New York. Part of Lower Bucks County but fairly distinct from other parts of the area like Levittown/Fairless Hills/Bristol. I do really love Newtown and think the historic downtown is gorgeous, but it's hard to say what the town's identity even is anymore.

I live in Shamokin,PA and let me tell you this town has got to be the dirtiest township in the state. It breaks my heart I used to be Coal Region proud, now I'm just embarrassed to say where I'm from. This town has so many new people coming because of the cheap housing, the people coming are not bringing anything good. It's now a little Philly. Don't get me wrong Shamokin was never the finest place to live, but we sure did have pride. This area is so poor since Covid things got much worse, houses falling down and laying there for years. People living in house that are barely standing, Gov has all this extra money to help little towns like mine, instead goes to water!! It's a shame what this town is coming down to...

I love Erie. It is such a beautiful place to live. The beaches on Presque Isle are so nice, they are great spots for hanging out with friends or spending time with family. There are a lot of amazing restaurants in Erie that have a variety of foods. The weather in the summer is great, but in the winter it sometimes gets bad. There are a lot of cool places to go have fun at. There are bowling places, water parks, amusements parks, nice hotels, laser tag...etc. This is a great place to live or visit! Erie is a pretty decent place to live. The cost of renting apartments isn't too high and there are plenty of jobs available! The only issue would be the drug and crime rate, but I would think that most cities have this issue.

Having lived in Lancaster county for over 30 years, I can tell you firsthand that there's a LOT of Rumspringa Amish kids 'driving' drunk. Normally, they'll be at a barn nearby or whatever, and the horse simply knows the way home. Back in 1984, a friend visiting from New York and I were standing outside one crisp October night. Suddenly, we started hearing AC/DC's 'Back in Black' coming up the road. Sure enough, it was a horse-drawn buggy full of drunk kids with a boombox. Neither of us had seen such a thing, and then, to our astonishment, one of them flipped us the bird and said, "Hey! F*ck YOU!", and at first they laughed, then all of us laughed hysterically as the horse was on auto-piliot. 🤣 It was my friend's strange introduction to the Amish and at the time, I had no explanation for it. Now though, I know about Rumspringa. It happens far more common that you'd think. 😉

Wisconsin v. Jonas Yoder, 406 U.S. 205 (1972), is the case in which the United States Supreme Court found that Amish children could not be placed under compulsory education past 8th grade. Pennsylvania has a strong growing system of private, religious, and home schooling networks. Pennsylvania has the founding role in creating the Bill of Rights, both for freedom of religion and speech (1st Amendment ) (thank you Quakers) and the right to keep and bear arms (2nd Amendment) (thank you for beating the RedCoats). In some places in PA, look out for bears while you go fishing, Grrr! :-)

I really enjoyed the interviews with the two men. I think they nailed their regions on point. I'm from Scranton, originally from NYC, and I've been here for 7 yrs now. I could tell you that it's a hot spot for New Yorkers, Philly, and New Jersey peeps leaving the big cities from the start of the pandemic. We are a rising city from the dust of the coal mining demise. There are talks now that Amtrak is looking to extend it's service from NYC to Scranton. We are extremely diverse, a good mix of the OG generation, LGBT, Immigrants, White, Black, Asian, and Hispanic. The city is filled with a community bond, and everyone helps people in need here. The prices of houses have soared, now about 50,000-100,000 more the past yr too.

My family is from Scranton. The Davis'. As a child, my Mother played in the coal banks. She told me how my Great Grandmother would yell at her for doing that since it was so dangerous. The city was beautiful except for the coal then. My relative was the editor of the Scranton Times in it's heyday. Irish and Welsh relatives immigrated there. Idk of any coal miners in the family.

May not speak for all, but I'm speaking for many. Go to Hershey? Who in this world has to travel over an hour to get somewhat, satisfactory medical care? Out of all of the counties in PA, Schuylkill county ranks a dismal #67, that's 3 from the bottom in medical care. People are friendly in some areas, but, if you look at the reviews from people who were born and raised here, only 2 1/2 out of 5 will agree with you. I'm from a major city, with quality hospitals, great city services and, people who care about each other. My taxes were half of what I pay here. Don't live where you think "I must" live. Not sure what delusion you live under. You must live near Bloomsburg, Hershey or Danville. Most people in "Skook" don't. Black Diamond Museums, coal mine rides, a theme park for chocolate lovers and corruption is all that appears to exist here. This county's inhabitants are leaving in droves. For folks thinking of moving here, the move could be your worst nightmare come true. @@redneckswitwheels

@@redneckswitwheels Already replied to you. I don't claim to speak for all of us. Hershey, Danville, Bloomsburg and the "wealthier" areas surrounding Schuylkill county don't suffer from the same decay and stagnation afflicting a huge area of this county. Most people around my neck of the woods are not friendly. Maybe I shouldn't blame the county for their lack of concern for their neighbors and just blame them, themselves. The medical care in Schuylkill County ranks so low in the list of counties, it's pathetic. Who would move to Pottsville or Shamokin? These cities were abandoned over 50 years ago. There was no reason to stay. Big money was no longer in control.

I am Italian and I lived in Philadelphia for eight years and I worked for my company that has a factory there. There I was able to hire young engineers and pass on to them all my experience and they rewarded me with their friendship (not easy in the workplace). I saw both the misery and the dignity of many poor people. For me it is a unique place where I have many friends and where I have never felt like a foreigner. I am sorry to read negative opinions about a city and a state that I love. Unfortunately I saw degraded neighborhoods that I did not imagine could exist. I am no longer young and for me America was the one in the movies of when I was a boy where the poor were not seen. It hurt me to see extremely poor people living in a Country that can give so much. However, I would gladly go back there.
