Pennsylvania Turnpike: The Lost Highway

The exact stretch of road as seen in the new John Hillcoat movie "The Road" with John Hillcoat with Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Robert Duvall.
For a much cheerier ending, join Mannie Gentile as he takes the Museum of America cameras to the Southern Pennsylvanian countryside to explore the mystery of the vanishing turnpike. Hold on to your hats as we look at a post-apocalyptic landscape that maybe, just maybe, a perfect place for a zombie movie. Yikes! Or at least some fantastic hiking and biking in one of the most unique places in America - the Lost Highway

I, as my handle implies, was a steel hauler in the '60's. I can still remember well the "hole in the wall" as we truckers called the old, narrow, smoky tunnels. Seems that I can remember two tunnels, one called "Blue Mountain Tunnel". Even with headlights on, you couldn't see oncoming traffic until you were just a few feet from them. It would have been very easy to hit mirrors the tunnels were so narrow. This is a very interesting short film and I thank the great guy that put this on here, even so many years ago. We need more of this old history that has been forgotten.

@@ernestpassaro9663 No it's still there. There was an identical bridge like that between Rutherford, NJ and Passaic. It was also built around 1900. They replaced it in 2001 with a wide bridge. I am a veteran "abandoned Turnpike" explorer, having found this via an old road map from 1940, and figuring it out from there. I have been to both Sideling Hill and Rays Hill tunnels, , actually drove my car on a part of the section leading up to the the west portal of Sideling Hill in 1980. Later, I would walk and bicycle a good portion of this stretch, culminating in a bike ride through both tunnels, starting from the Cove Valley service plaza to US 30, and then back around. I have photos to prove it all. Thank you for this cool post!

As you exit the Turnpike eastbound at US 30 to take I-70 eastbound to Baltimore, you'll see the beginnings of the abandoned road as you bend toward US 30. Unfortunately, the Turnpike Commission took out the bridge over US 30 shortly after closing it in 1968. It would be interesting to put in a smaller bridge for bicycles, resurface the road (a thin coat is all that's needed), vintage signage, modern LED lighting in the tunnels, a replica of the service area as a rest stop/restaurant/museum, and access areas for visitors. Would make a great bicycling and tourist facility, but mucho millions would be needed to restore and maintain it.

My mom moved to Philadelphia from Johnstown in 1959, I was born in 1960. We made the trip from Phila to Johnstown many times through the 60s into the 70s and I remember all of those tunnels and when this part was abandoned. Of course like so many the stops at Howard Johnson's were always a highlight. I always think of those giant multi colored lollipops. At one time, I could name them all from east to west.. (can't now)

What a neat video! A gem from the early days, a window in to 2000s America, and informative and lovingly made! There's lots of stretches of abandoned highway in the Canadian Shield--several miles of PTH 10 south of Flin Flon MB for example. Winding roads with lots of blind spots, narrow lanes, narrow shoulders, and now overgrown and increasingly inaccessible...

Ahhhh, Breezewood. Crossroads of ... well, something. I remember driving west from Virginia in the '60's & '70's, you HAD to drive through Breezewood if you wanted to keep to the Interstate Highways. It seems like you had to do several whifferdills (to borrow an aviation term) to get from I-70 to I-76, or the other way around. It seems like it would have been so much less costly to simply construct parallel two-lane tunnels alongside the existing ones, and then reorient the right-of-way to conform to them. But, hey, what do I know ?

Nice video, guys! Excellent history recount and fun to watch. I live close to Breezewood and will be biking the two tunnels soon. Rode my Triumph there the other day, but didn't realize you can't get motorized vehicles up to the tunnel. Can't wait for spring.

Lotta memories.1st time Jan 20th 1959 to Wash DC, Navy deployment. Back n forth several times on leaves. After the Navy 'in 62 made trips every 6 wks to n from DC for 5 years. There was a hiatus in 67-68 and this explains why no tunnel when I got back on the road in 69, the change was so subtle. LOL Definiotely miss it. Just like I miss Old Rt 66! (only 3 times but same

We used to drive through it. I remember the tunnels and the toll booths every so often. The Restaurants were Howard Johnson's I think the name was, and they had the best fried clams.

And at the current highly inflated price of the Pa Turnpike, most likely the WHOLE thing will become deserted.

Yeah... I loved the commercial using the word "free" and "freedom" over and over... for just about the most expensive road to travel in the entire U.S. About the only thing worse... is the George Washington Bridge. Driving truck out of Philly, I'd run US422 to Harrisburg, then US322 to State College, and then US220 up to I-80, and then on west. Even with the extra miles, it was FAR cheaper than running Pennsylvania's money train. And, with Ohio getting more expensive, I'd run I-80 to I-76 to I-71 down to US30. I was all four-lane 70MPH all the way across Ohio... and NO tolls.

@R Go Well then, why don't you go stand at the toll booth and pay everybody's toll for them if they're so good. The only road in worse shape than the PA turnpike... is the New Jerkey Turnpike. They both use the tolls for all their pet social programs instead of fixing the damn road. All that money collected, and the roads are crap.

So true. I think the current toll to go from Harrisburg to Carlisle is $6. That’s like a 10 mile drive.

@@donf3877 the George Washington bridge is the worst fucking bridge in the world even worse than the Verrazano if that’s possible never ending traffic jams I avoid it when possible

Sometimes when I have to go to Connecticut from nj I run the New York State thruway all the way up and cut across 84 to Connecticut it’s still faster than using the George Washington bridge !

Nice video.I was in this area last weekend.I knew I was in the right area when I saw the Sideling Hill Rd.overpass and the signs for Breezewood.Hubby and I were driving back to Harrisburg from Knoebels and we went thru 4 newer tunnels.

I believe the relocated Breezewood interchange uses part of the original turnpike to get to it from the relocated turnpike.

Love this! I travel back and forth from Delaware to Ohio on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Back in 1963 our motor blew in the old Chevy while we were traveling from NYC to Cincinnati on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. My dad had to buy a new car in Breezewood. I wonder now if we had broken down on that old section of the turnpike. Thanks for the video! I think I'll look into biking along the old section.
