This is not a reprise or a reinvention! Penny Dreadful is a genre of stories like horror or fantasy not just one series. It is not the same as the first Penny Dreadful series because it is a type of story not just a series.
I hope people don't start saying that this series is not that good because "it's not like the first Penny Dreadful". City of angels must be treated as a totally different series, without comparisons.
@@livingdeadgirl5090 I wonder if they had left, "Penny Dreadful" out of the equation, would viewers/reviewers alike, feel the same way? Perhaps if people today, found out what a "Penny Dreadful" is, rather than referring to THAT as the 1st series on Showtime? Again, feel the same way?
@@Kiss__Kiss Yeah... Certainly the first title is a big factor for the negative comments that the series is receiving from PD fans. There are fans literally ignoring the existence of COA just because "it's not like PD". I understand that they wanted something closer to the original, idk, but... it's another theme, there are different cultures in a different place, at a different time. Of course it will be different.
Playing Magda (the Demon), Elsa (The aryan blonde), Alex (the nerdy assistant) and Rio (the zoot suit latino gangster) makes Natalie Dormer one of the most fascinating actresses around. She is a young attractive artist but also British so she really does not know much about the latino culture in America and did a good job at it. But that takes a lot of talent and reading. I would be surprised that Natalie Dormer is not nominated for a Golden Globe next time.
@@kene301187 I saw an interview where she said pretty much the opposite. In it, she said that there was a personal project she wanted to work on, so she asked D&D what her GoT filming schedule was going to be like (so she could figure out when she could do her project). It was then they told her she was actually being killed off, which took her by surprise.
I know the interview you’re referring to. Benioff and Weiss just killed characters who are alive in the books for no reason other than to consolidate the plot because they can’t write.
@@emdazed That's what he says. In the plot of the 3rd season, there were clearly new elements being put to push forward for a new season. Even the final scene of the series alludes to continuation. I am very sure it was production troubles. Penny Dreadful was one class act for a show.
The moment I heard that there was going to be a "Penny Dreadful, second series", I was all "NOOOOOOOOOO" Then there was the moment I found out that N Dormer was going to be playing some kind of demon and I was all "YEESSSSSSSS" And in the first two minutes of Ep 1, I was in love with this new Penny Dreadful.
Natalie Dormer is a phenomenal talent I am entertained in 2020 by an actress who knows her craft the characters are genuine. She is great in this series, 5 Stars.
Here. A dark writer is observing this show rn. He actually has a youtube. You have never seen writing or darkness like his. He is most beautiful. Please. Go to him. Adore his time on earth. 💙 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n7rjEEk7q9M.html
This looks and sounds really good, looking forward to seeing it. I would watch anything with Natalie Dormer in it, its like having a stamp for highest quality on it.
I just read today that Showtime cencelled this show and tbh I didn't know anything about this show and the previous version with Eva Green. I mean, I thought Eva was Penny Dreadful. LMAO Now after after reading such sad news I started watching this one and I fell in love with the argument. I loved the pulling-the-strings thing, that voice in your mind that ain't yours and makes you do the unthinkable like some evil entity could manipulate you that easily. (Indeed, I think it happens for real. Call it demons, schizophrenia, "god", "the devil", aliens, reptilians, the dead, the monster inside you, whatever. There are some people more susceptible than others.) Dude, I loved it and makes me think that one of the main causes for the show to flop was the way they sell the show. I mean, it's like black mirror in a way, many people don't know that BM has its "special mode" like Technology always involved, independent episodes, etc.) Acting, writing, the topic and direction are gorgeous. I don't see other heavy reason.
Would love to hear more about the relationship between Magda and Santa Muerte and how that plays out in the context of what's happening culturally in LA
@@briankocheraabcdt4628 I didn't mean how they're related, I meant the dynamic. It's quite obvious they are at odds, but Magda is all in with her crusade to create chaos and stir things up while Santa Muerte is the exact opposite and doesn't seem to want to get involved, like when Tiago's mother is pleading for her to help
Lorenza Izzo as Santa Muerte and Natalie Dormer as Magda were excellent...but the show was...well indeed dreadful. Dreadfully boring, bland, with an unremarkable cast, nonsensical storylines and plot points all of them wrapped in a thick, mind-numbing and idiotic blanket of wokeness and virtue signalling. Add to that shoddy special effects, crappy cinematography and it is no wonder it got cancelled. Instead of doing a standalone show that could have explored the richness of Latin American culture, especially the it’s mythology and supernatural elements...we got this ill conceived spinoff with the title of “Penny Dreadful” attached to it, something that didn’t bode well before the show even premiered. I’ll say this though, Santa Muerte, was one of the best designed and realized characters I’ve seen in a while. From her look, to her presence, makeup, costume and just stunning beauty of both the actress and character she inhabited in a quite memorable fashion. Too bad...this was such a missed opportunity.
The platform... That is like one of the best new films i have ever seen. Ppl need to give it a shot. Its graphic. Violent. Its about life. Can't give too much away but basically ppl sign up or find a way to get into this experiment where you are randomly placed on a level, and a "platform" comes down from the ceiling and has a wide variety of food. The lower you are... The less food you get to share. & you die if you keep the food. It will blow you away. Watch it
A great actor but woefully mistaken... how insulting to compare or even suggest there is anything similar to pre war Germany and Brexit shows how out of touch she is.
I mean this with the utmost respect, she's a "Beast." I get the white characters, but why the Latino. I could think of at least 10 gorgeous, acting, dancing, Latino sisters that could kill that role.
What I like in Hollywood actresses is they are all down to earth almost all of them and it makes you feel at ease. And it seems not that it's all merely the professional etiquette either. As far as I'm concerned I don't see them just as sex dolls they surely deserve respect.
This is so funny, I've been re-watching West Wing and trying to pretend Trump doesn't exist. I had no idea there was going to be a new Penny Dreadful. I finished watching the first 3 seasons for the 3rd time about a month ago. Rory Kinnear's portrayal of Frankenstein's monster makes me tear up, no matter how many times I watch him. With all that is happening throughout the show with the characters, the fight between good and evil, somehow I think he is what elevates the show into more than just a horror series, or another vampire/monster show. By following his journey after having his humanity torn away, only to be snatched back from death, abandoned by his maker, left alone to make his way among cruelty and contempt with nothing but books and theatre for solace and companionship. Perhaps I identify a little too closely with him, but truthfully, he was the only character I wept for, with the exception of the finale. I am a huge fan of Natalie Dormer. I might not have bothered to try a new incarnation of the program, but there are some performers whose work I enjoy, and she is absolutely one I make it a point to see when I can.
so they are going to reboot penny dreadful? I like they bringing a show that was cut short but this trailer kinda looks more like american horror story than "penny dreadful"
Most entertainers that have been aired recently in their homes due to Corona virus look horrible, even the news reporters. Like these people don’t know how to groom themselves. Natalie looks amazing though. She’s a natural beauty.
Children you are not save lord save us, race riots, division, city of angles and demons, shape shifting a bit like real life America now lol I didn't mind this show, I like Natalie :)
Melisandre that is such a Lie. It was not cancelled it was always gonna end with mother evil dying and it was always set for 3 seasons. And PD was masterful
Duckman 100 it was cancelled they were meant to do season 4 with the mummy and people weren’t interested into the story so they cancelled it I thought penny dreadful was amazing and was sad when it was cancelled
