My name is Brycen Smith, I have spent my adult life building my career as a professional hotrod builder, but I have a passion for old ford trucks and, more specifically, 1967 - 1972 "Bump-side" Fords. This truck is my second personal bump-side build, and it is the product of years of professional knowledge and skill but built after hours and in my home garage. "Penny" is a 1967 F250 that I purchased from Doug's four-wheelers in Pella, Iowa. I named the truck after finding a 1967 penny under the truck's seat as I proceeded to tear it down for the rebuild. I converted the truck from 2-wheel drive to 4-wheel drive and proceeded to spend 22 months rebuilding the truck and making it into what it is now. The chassis is its original 1967 F250 2wd frame rails with 1973 F250 4x4 cross members and suspension mounted to it.
I had the chassis fully sandblasted, then painted with POR-15 rust preventative and topcoat paint and completely rebuilt with all new suspension parts, axles, and hardware. It has a completely rebuilt NP205 transfer case and freshened NP435 transmission and a 352FE engine. I did fix some rust in the cab; it got cab mounts, floor pans, and cab corners. I proceeded to repaint the firewall, bottom of the floor, and Interior. I added a new right-side inner fender and core support paired with the original left-side inner fender and had them powder coated. I wired the truck with American Auto Wire 67-72 Ford truck harness, installed Vintage Air sure fit for '67 Ford pickup trucks, Dakota Digital VHX gauges for 67-72 Ford pickup trucks. It has electric power steering, Wilwood master cylinder, with all new brake lines and brakes to stop the fully rebuilt Dana 44 front and Dana 60 axles. The engine is the 352FE in the truck when I bought it, along with the NP435 transmission and Dana 60 rear axle. The NP205 transfer case and Dana 44 front axle are from the 1973 donor chassis. Peny has 3:73 gears, new limited-slip differentials, and rides on 255/85/16 Toyo Open Country M/T tires with powder coated Ford 16x7 steelies. The truck has a full stainless steel exhaust custom with Borla mufflers that I built myself. Everything on the truck was gone through, every nut and bolt removed and either replaced or freshened up.
The seat cover is from SMS Auto Fabrics to replace the original pattern that was in the truck. The carpet is from LMC, as well as the dash pad and other various interior parts. I've used LMC on past builds and will continue to use them in the future. I got the core support, passenger side inner fender, front-end hardware for the fenders, and sheet metal from LMC. I decided to swap the truck to 4-wheel drive because I wanted a "highboy" Ford when I was looking for a truck, but when I found Penny, I loved the truck and the way it looked so much that I decided it was the one I wanted to buy, and I would make it 4x4 myself. The patina on the truck is the original paint for the truck, and it used to belong to the Iowa Realty Company. On the bed above the body line, it says the "Iowa Realty Co. Inc." and on the door, it says the "Farm & Ranch Department" and "Des Moines." It has some local history to where I live, which was part of what made me fall in love with the patina of the truck. Finding a solid truck in Iowa with all the body panels still matching without having significant rot through a lot of the panels was a rare thing, so I wanted to bring it back to roadworthy condition. My main goal with the truck was to keep the original flare to maintain that originality aspect while making it have some creature comforts and making it into a 4-wheel drive truck. Everything but the exterior paint job has been redone, refinished, or reworked.
Driving Penny is a unique experience for a couple of reasons. Because of the patina, I think the truck is more relatable and approachable for people. I get lots of waves and people that compliment it. But then, when I pop the hood and open the doors, people are speechless. Penny truly is one of a kind.

Incredible job on your classic F-250. I had purchased my grandfather’s 67 F-250 Camper Special, Custom Cab with 352/4 speed. It was the best truck that I have ever owned. Mostly highway miles as my grandparents enjoyed fishing and camping and it was very well maintained.

Nice! I had a 68 F250 Highboy myself, many years ago. Bought it from a neighbor and used it on the farm, pulling grain to town, cutting firewood and the like. Miss that old truck. Good Job Young Man! If you ever want to sell it, I'm interested 👍.

Brycen, what a beautiful truck you have created out of a Ho-Hum 4x2 F250. I have always loved the Ford F-250 / F350 High Boy 4x4 chassis....Watching your video blog on this beauty brought tears to my eyes....I guess If it were me restoring this beauty, I would have put a new Harbour Blue paint job on her....and replaced the white bumpers with chrome.....But, I do respect your wanting to keep the original patina for the historical content on the vehicle.... What can I say...the truck is a show-stopper...I suspect if you were ever to sell Penny, she'd go for a "pretty Penny" LoL....

Thank you! I couldn't bring myself to paint it. All of the character would be lost and it would just be another repainted old truck, but maybe on the next one. A patina that rough and especially that solid is rare and the 54 years it took to become that.

My favorite series f250. I have a 72 f250 factory high boy. Two tone green XLT ranger with factory AC. 4 speed power breaks. I put a 69 429 engine mated to the original transmission. I added power steering from a 78 f350 along with the front Dana 60 with disk breaks. The trucks of this vintage Ford’s are tough as nails

You lost me at “ patina “. As a guy who’s done paint and body for 20yrs I’m tired of the patina fad. Paint the truck.
@prddesign
@prddesign Год назад
Unfortunately for you, Patina isn't a fad. It's here to stay. While I love a nice, quality paint job, they can never replace the 50+years of history showing on original paint. I've been building custom cars professionally for over 18 years and have been a part of many high-end builds with high-end paint jobs. Unless it's high-end paint, I dont want it. I'd take original paint over mediocre paint any day of the week.
@GiveMeYourNachosButthead
@GiveMeYourNachosButthead 11 месяцев назад
Nah I disagree with you as well! I always appreciate a nice paint job, but tbh, nothing beats the original color popping out (even if it is faded and rusty after so many years of sitting outside), plus I look at it as a way to just not care about scratching or chipping paint while doing some 4wheeling or hard work with the truck. They’re made to get dirty, dented and take a general beating!

My childhood days on camping trips and fishing, my dad owned a 65 Ford camper special and a 73 Ford. I would love to have a old school "dependable" old Ford 4x4 restored as a daily driver over the crap made now days. No heated steering wheel? A pair of gloves given from someone from Christmas does the trick. You know not to drive like an idiot, air bags not required! But.....Seat belts are cool!

outstanding. Have had a few bumps and the forward sloping front end, full length 'bump' along the side and the toughness of these is why I love them. appreciate your work and certainly motivates me to build one more factory style instead of dropping a godzilla or build a 427FE in it and lay it on the frames as I would tend to do. of course nothing wrong with those builds but something about Penny is special and I think its the fact that its a factory style. new trend coming on! lol. thx for all the details.

She’s a sweet pickup for sure, great call on the 255/85’s on 16” steel wheels, I can’t stand this trend toward 20” rims and 14” wide rubber band tires on these old 4wd pickups. The only things I’d do differently is I’d forgo the power steering in favor of putting an overdrive transmission, probably an NV4500 but maybe a T-56 if budget allowed. The nice thing about the divorced T-case on Hi-boy’s is you can swap to almost any overdrive trans you want with just an advance adapters bellhousing and a modified stub-shaft to go between the trans and T-case.

I think that your cab lights on your pickup maybe original. My brother in law’s 67 F250 camper special he ordered with a 352 with an automatic had 3 cab lights that looked similar. 67 on back could have 3 or 5 cab lights if it was over a certain width, and a overhead camper put it at that width. 68 on had to have 5 cab lights. He lived in El Paso so he also had add on AC. Why do you call it Penny? On the farm we call one Bud, because that was the former owner’s name. Hello from north east Montana. 10 miles from the Canadian border.
