Pensacola Tourism Film 1964

Tourism film by Dodson, Craddock & Born produced on film in 1964. The Spanish music--well, ALL the music, is just hilarious, and the scriptwriting old school. Be watching for the segment on the Pensacola Open (held at the Pensacola Country Club in 1964) where the narrator points out Tom Watson in the blue sweater--but it's all in black & white!!! Shows the old Casino building at Casino Beach (Pensacola Beach), Fort Pickens State Park (now Gulf Islands National Seashore) and ginormous mahogany logs dropping off the side of a huge cargo ship into the harbor to be lashed together and floated down to Bayou Chico, where they were "processed" at the Mahogany Mill. A fascinating look into Pensacola's past, even if some of the facts are a little sketchy....

My sister just shared this video on her facebook page, and as I watched it, I couldnt believe my eyes... There I was, as a child marching in the parade...And my most embarrassing moment caught on tape as I dropped my baton! I still cant believe this video has existed all this time and I never knew about it until know.. almost 50 years later! This is a great representation of Pensacola. Pensacola Tourism did a fantastic job on this :)

I was cleaning up my computer of old emails and come upon this that I had saved several years ago. I came here in 1956 for flight school. Came back to Whiting Field from 1962-1965. Finally retired here in 1975. I am going to forward to some of my old friends. I remember most all things shown. Thanks fro preserving it.Bob Cleveland

+BOB CLEVELAND Hey, Bob! Thanks for your note. Glad to stir up those old memories--I hope most of them were good ones! Ha! And when will you come back to visit? You wouldn't recognize downtown--it's quite a happening place now. And a new baseball stadium on the bayfront, a public plaza where the old municipal auditorium once stood. Lots happening. Come see us!

I grew up about halfway between NAS Saufley and NAS Mainside in the 50's and 60's and spent a great deal of time watching the hordes of T-28's flying overhead. It is where my passion for aviation began!

I don't check this site often, but I'm glad so many folks are enjoying this old video rescued from the trash compactor! We are now Airbnb hosts, and I give my guests an orientation tour of the downtown area, Seville and North Hill if they haven't been here before. We stop at Seville Quarter (everyone loves the interior of this place!), the ball park, and Joe Patti's. Don't we live in a fabulous place? I can't imagine ever living anyplace else.

Robin, I just want to repeat all the good things everyone has said abt this video...what a jewel!!! Thank you thank you thank you, I have lived here, all my life not born here, but a Navy brat and this is where Daddy was stationed in 1968, and from then on, he always said he had that Pensacola Sand in his shoes, he couldn't get it out, so he just had to stay here!!!! I am sooo glad he did !! ... now people can see why we are so proud!! thanx....Sheri

Hi; stumbled on your U-tube, found it very memorable. I was stationed there in 67, have great memories. We held a squadron reunion there in 02 and wow you've really lost a lot of the beach in front of the old Casino, like 1/2 of it. Found out the old San Carlos Hotel was torn down...spent my 1st night in Pensacola there, Great Old Lady! Some of the old sites are still around like "Richies", well by now it's probably been demolished too. The old Tiki Motel on Santa Rosa Is.....gone. "Time stands still for no man." , BUT the memories live on! Thanks Robin for taking the time.....

Thank YOU for leaving such a nice note. Most folks just take an opportunity to talk about what's WRONG with Pensacola. I think it's improved 1000% since I moved here in 1982. It's such an outdoor kind of a place; you have to get out and enjoy it and do your own exploring to find the hidden gems, of which there are many. Thanks for watching!!! And please come back and see us soon!

What a great TIME CAPSULE find! About this time (age 14) I was helping on the family farm 30 miles North and loved trips to the WIDE OPEN beach. I was selling vegetables to groceries downtown and watermelons to NAS sailors on the base back then. Thanks to whomever posted this!

Thank you! We moved here in 1947, so it was refreshing to see. Couldn't believe the shot of the airport! I can remember when 9th Ave was a dirt road out that way when they started building the junior college.

Thanks for commenting! 27,000 hits and counting! I worked as a writer for an ad agency back in the 80s and had to write a historic district walking tour. I started doing research on Pensacola, and I was hooked forever. What an amazing place this is! I now collect vintage Pensacola "ephemera"--paper goods that were never meant to last--postcards, menus, photographs, matchbook covers, and old visitor guides and brochures. Been here 30 years and may stay 30 more! Cheers

Just viewed this wonderful video! I am a member of the National League of American Pen Women -Pensacola Chapter. The NLAPW(based in Washington, DC) will be 120years old in 2018 and the Pensacola Chapter will be 75 years old as well. Our group is researching our founders which date back to 1943..we are in search of discovery regarding our founders who were very active in the cultural life of Pensacola. We are looking for clues about women such as Occie Clubbs- educator and historian, Celia Robinson- who wrote"Jackson and the Enchanted City"-about old Pensacola. Please message me on my Facebook page. Perhaps you can offer us more insight about old Pensacola?

Robin, thanks so much for posting this. Michael had given me a copy years ago, but I couldn't share it. This is perfect! I couldn't help but count the losses of what were touted as such important parts of our community almost a mere 50 years ago. Seeing the San Carlos broke my heart. Good job! Vicki

I loved watching this, and even enjoyed the music! ...But the year of this film's production, cited as 1964, is one of those "sketchy facts" you alluded to, for at 8:09, a 1967 Buick Electra 225 hardtop sedan passes through the frame, and at 9:26, we see a fiberglass boat (which I can't fully identify) powered by a black MerCruiser stern drive. (These drives were never painted black until the start of the 1967 model year.) Because Buick and Kiekhaefer Mercury both introduced their next year's models early, in the preceding autumn, those two film clips could have been shot as early as September 1966 -- but certainly not before then.
@rrowan55

Thanks for watching, Don, and for your comments about the year. 1964 was written on the old tape box itself--it was all we had to go by. All the best to you.
