Pentagon tracks Russian fleet as it travels to Cuba

Russian naval ships and at least one nuclear-powered submarine entered Cuban waters Wednesday readying to conduct military exercises in the Caribbean in the coming weeks. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin has more on how the U.S. is tracking the fleet.

Not necessarily. It's foolish to expect a few small Russian vessels in international waters to pose a danger to the US. The US Navy's presence in the area is much greater and much more powerful.

Because it matters. They may not be a threat, but they are a message. Unfortunately for Putin, they are not the message he thinks they are. In Russia, people are led to believe this is a threat and impressive, but in Russia, they also don't discuss the types of drills the US does. The US would never send such a pathetic bunch anywhere; the only reason someone would is because they can't do better or aren't willing to risk more. It is actually surpassing the German economy.... Russia has much more nukes than the US... Russian objective in Ukraine is not to take the whole of Ukraine, it is to absolutely destroy the whole of Ukraine's military capability for ever... Russia is a country of impressive beauty, rich culture, and significant history, same like Ukraine. An alternative approach could have been for Ukraine to peacefully unite with Russia. This process could have been celebrated ceremoniously and without violence, ensuring no harm came to anyone. Both sides could have benefited from such a peaceful union. I am genuinely saddened that stronger efforts were not made diplomatically, both internationally and by reducing military presence, to ensure peace.

The main ship and the sub can both carry Kinzhal and Zircon missiles, and are nuclear capable. Also, the tugger can tear sea lines with it's lines, and the third ship can target drones. All of the above is open-source info and the public need to know it is dangerous for such vessels to be so close to the U.S. What is more, there are EW measures on those vessels, capable of EI (Electronic Interference/Jamming) in the Florida Keys, etc... Yes, we are monitoring the ships and sub, but don't leave out info nor downplay the fact that they'll be doing air and naval exercises, including with their "White Swan" long-rang bombers stationed in Venezuela, along with a Chinese airstrip being built in Cuba, not far from Russian/Chinese espionage posts, which Newsweek covered, but you did not.

Lol. Unfortunately for them, most of the rest are stuck or out of commission0. According to what is publically known they only have four modern tugboats that can make it to the Atlantic, four late Soviet-era ones, and two mid-20th-century ships. The rest of their Northern Fleet tugs are not designed for oceans. If they wanted to use their sea tugs, they have six, a mix of ancient and relatively new ones.

Interesting to see the frigate _Admiral Gorshkov_ is now sporting the hull number 454. The photos on Wikipedia show it with hull number 417. I've read that the Russian Navy paints different numbers on its vessels, to give the impression of having more ships than it really does have, and here is evidence of that.

The Russian fleet comprised a single surface warship a frigate, which is the smallest ocean crossing warship, an ocean crossing tugboat for a towing back to Russia, an oilier to refuel the surface ships and a single nuclear sub. The nuclear sub is the only one that will give detail data on its underwater noise profile for future reference.
