As my wife's gift for Christmas, we got to see them last week and they did this as the 2nd or 3rd song of the night. It was so great to watch and they add some choreography to highlight the signer of that "day"
Yes, you were right on the money with the drum line for 9 (which they had Matt sing because he actually is a drummer), and 10 pipers piping was meant to be like Scottish bagpipes. And get this - 11 ladies dancing was meant to have an ABBA vibe - Dancing Queen, get it? Lol! For the rest, they just picked different genres. So clever and creative!!
I have hated this song over 50 years. Only gave the PTX version a chance because I love everything else they sing. Glad I did. Now I actually enjoy it and even catch myself singing along!

Tip -- if you get one of the earlier Christmas albums, make sure you look for the "deluxe" version, which will have extra tracks. There is also a "Best of Pentatonix Christmas" album with a lot of their best songs and four new ones. It's from 2019 so it does not include anything from their last 3 Christmas albums.
I'm a huge pentatonix fan and I like all of their Christmas songs. This was my first time hearing their version of this song. It's never been a favorite Christmas song of mine but you are right, they really add a lot of life to it and put their own style on it. Made it so much more enjoyable for me. Their original Christmas songs are good too. That's Christmas to Me, Thank You, Evergreen. (The last two are not a capella, but still very good songs.) Two of their Christmas albums are platinum-selling albums. "That's Christmas to Me" was the *fourth* best-selling album in 2014. Christmas and Pentatonix go very well together.

The individuals display their own 'personal' genres for the 12 days to give pop, jazz, soul, contemporary, etc. etc. They always have a hidden meaning or tribute in their songs too. Ex: If you have reacted to Amazing Grace, in the intro Kirsty and Matt hold long notes that emulate the age old bag pipes, Mitch has fringe on the back of his jacket and down the underside of the arms to suggest angel wings, the all white attire represents purity or heavenly presence. In Daft Punk Medley the Blue is a tribute to The band Daft Punk. In Mary Did You Know the light surrounding Kirsty's head from the cave entrance is a subtle hint of the Virgin Giving Birth to the Messiah or Holiness or chosen of God to bear His Holy Son, Immanuel. I'm sure I missed a lot of subtile infusions. But it is more than just the music. there is something for every one. Enjoyed this and looking forward to more PTX. I got to see them sing this live on Sunday and it was AMAZING! The whole show was out of this world. HIGHLY recommend seeing them in concert if possible, wow. Great reaction 😊
I have been a Pentaholix since the first year(2011 The Sing Off), and my favorite way to introduce others to the PTX experience is the Christmas albums. I have made gifts of PTX christmas music to friends and family every year since the first album, and have convinced several store owners that they use PTX music for the sound tracks in store. And you have to see the one from their TV special when Mitch's animated character says "Hold my eggnog" at a christmas challenge. just so Mitch.

Ptx are always a feast for the ears. However ... it has to be said that THIS is an ear orgy. Highly enjoyable but OMG so many bits and pieces in every which direction. I love when Scott hits the 12 days of Christmas. It amuses me because he kinda out-Bubles Michael Buble!! (come on Michael ... you know it's true). I loved your reaction.
Uh NO! The original song is very boring so boring it seems to drag on forever 😆 You need to listen to the original, PENTATONIX modernized it, made it extremely fun by setting it to different song genres. They do this live as well THEY ARE AMAZING!
