Fun fact: They had been looking for a place to do this video and Matt was looking for venues for his upcoming wedding and saw this place. He sent pictures to the other 4 in the band and the rest as they say is history.
Instead of being solemn, this version is fully inspirational. The progressive build up to their wall of sound is mesmerizing. Then they drop you off the cliff only to catch you and float back down to having Kevin finish so beautifully. Most times when I hear Amazing Grace, I'm left with feeling sadness and despair. This version leaves me feeling joyous and full of hope. ❤🙏
Scenery? It's The Chapel Of The Wayfarer..in Palo Verde, California. A glass chapel nestled in the redwoods. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Spectacular!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not Frank Lloyd Wright, but Lloyd Wright, his son. Obviously the father had a strong impact on the son's aesthetic (and I, for one, am definitely on board with that).
At one point during the Sing-Off, a judge came down on Scott for crowding out his bandmates with his sheer power, and I'm guessing it had a profound impact on him. He has a huge voice: volume, range, skills. As you say, he's learned to hold himself back a bit. I don't know how many times any of us has heard Mitch do such a strong, straightup tenor part: it's beautiful, and it sets up Kirstin's soaring solo perfectly. Matt's starting solo is straightforward and heartfelt, but in addition to his stirring bass notes throughout, his facial expressions are perfect: beatific and joyful. And Kevin was so sweet and strong at the end.
I loved that sound...and the arrangement overall. In a similar ballpark as pedal tones, I haven't personally figured out how to best utilize, or implement, them.
My understanding is that the drone sound is meant to imitate a bagpipe's constant drone, since the song is often used at funerals with a bagpipe accompaniment.
I knew when I saw you were reacting to this amazing version by PTX that it was going to give you multiple “eargasms”. My favorite for sure…..until I hear the next one.🤣 Your part of the PTX family now. My suggestion for the next is “Imagine “ or “Mary did you know”.🎶🎶💕🦋
Thank you , Matt is like warm Carmel. Avi was hot chocolate, no way can you pick one. They are both great ,no one can pick one over the other. You are one of the first who pointed that out. I wish people would just get over it! Avi is gone--- Matt is here, both are great !
That discordant droning sound at the beginning was intended to evoke the playing of bagpipes, which is very common at funerals (as you mentioned). The only reactor I've heard who twigged to that on first hearing was of Scottish descent ,so I guess he had an advantage. Also, did you catch the symbolic 'wings' on the back of Mitch's jacket? I believe they're alluding to his 'angelic' voice, but just my interpretation. Yes, we were all surprised by Kevin in this, too. Such a perfect closure to this iconic song. Thanks for another great Pentatonix reaction.
I hadn’t thought of the “wings” this way, just as Mitch being Mitch! I don’t think he has the ego to go along with his voice being so-labeled - particularly in this song, in which he sings in a lower register. (No disrespect intended!)
This is a cover of a version by gospel singer Chris Tomlin in 2006, who did this arrangement of the classic "Amazing Grace" with the lyrics "My Chains Are Gone" added in. Pentatonix and their spin was exhilarating.
The constant droning sound at the beginning sounds more like the drone of a pipe organ to me. And by the way, this Chapel is actually sitting on a cliffside overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Palos Verdes, CA ( spelling correct) and is surrounded by some redwood trees, but not nestled in the redwoods. If you are a born Californian you know there is a difference in "oceanside" vs "in the redwoods".
Newp...I've only been to CA twice to date. Went to Monterey once and I believe Huntington Beach...and both were something like 15+ years ago. Wait...forgot a San Diego trip and two to Ft. Irwin....but there's never anything fun with those trips lol (speaking to the Ft. Irwin ones). So, five total 😊.
Subscribed! Thank you for not stopping during Mitch’s solo lol! I love it. That being said, I thought all their solos in this were superbly done. I love Pentatonix’s take on everything song they do. And I like your background visuals and your comments. 👍.
Another great reaction… I know you’re aware of Kevin’s solo work… I’m very impressed with his “KOver” of Down. A lot of singing range and looping of cello and his amazing vocal perc. Other recommendations… I see you’ve done a couple of Home Free. I’d love you to react to their Man of Constant Sorrow. Their vocal perc guy Adam Rupp had some amazing effects in that. Also Id add a vote to other commenters recommendation of PTX’s Imagine cover. More Kevin high singing, also awesome Avi bass and such a clever staging of the “message” of the song.
Glad I stumbled upon you channel. I've been a musician/singer for 43 years and you speak my language. Thank for the video 👍 ** Check out Voctave "Oh come all ye faithful". You'll dig it
WOULD YOU CONSIDER REACTING TO A ALL FEMALE ACAPELLA GROUP FORMED BY MEMBERS OF PENTATONIX'S CALLED CITIZEN QUEEN AND TWO OF THEIR COVERS OF NEVER ENOUGH AND NO MORE TEARS LEFT TO CRY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!AAA
Nice to see that you've included PTX back into your playlists. Can you feel the love tonight....90"s dance medley...Mad World could be a nice next stop. Great reaction. Thanks and stay safe.
Rooted for Pentatonix all through the Sing Off ten years ago... huge fan. I've listened to this version of Amazing Grace hundreds of times and still get chills.
@@Motivatedk9 An atheist friend of mine asked me why I go to church... I thought about it for a while, and then answered... "It keeps me humble and grateful".
Hello! Thank you for the video! Please pay attention to the young singer Diana Ankudinova.Make reactions to the songs of Wicked game, Human🌞🌞🌞DIANA ANKUDINOVA is a talented young singer. I would like to know your opinion. I think you will be surprised. Diana has a very unusual voice and artistic presentation for her age.🌹🌹🌹 Thanks in advance
You should also review Superfruit (Scott and Mitch's spin-off channel/group) covering Katy Perry's RISE (featuring Brian Justin Crum, Mario Jose, and Mary Lambert) from a few years back.
That drone sound through the first part is reminiscent of the bagpipe which is the usual instrument played when the song isn’t sung. Matt does that beautifully. I think what makes PTX so unique is the individual quality of each voice. I can tell who is singing without looking. And yet those totally unique voices make up the singular harmonies that make them different from every other a capella group.
Ed Boyer - the group's excellent sound engineer. But the thing is they also have an excellent arranger - Ben Bram. And of course this excellent group of singers who can execute it
