Siim Koger yeah the thick sound of the song comes from heavily layering the sounds. Queen achieved that dynamic sound that way. But I agree that without any distortion, the orchestra didn't quite work. Except that opera part of course! That was gorgeous

To be fair, Pentatonix were kind of like guests at this concert - it wasn't the same as their regular tour concerts.

They kind of suck at doing other people's music. Which is all they do.

@@erindoremi Thank you! It annoys me seeing all the comments on how the orchestra should not be there. Sure, argue about audio levels and choices in the arrangement. But people really don't get that the orchestra is the "thing" for this event and Pentatonix are the guests. As much as I love Pentatonix in their acapella pureness, people really don't seem to understand how freaking humongous it is to be asked to sing with this orchestra at this location!

In their original studio performance they have recorded more than 10 voices, without this little help the song would sound so empty and it would be really messed up.

Robinson Crusoe but did they actually? It didn't seem like they used overdubbing at all in bohemian rhapsody. Maybe a little overlap but not straight up adding other voices. All of Ptx vol 4 was pretty clean from using overdubbing.

The vocal arrangement doesn't really lend itself to the adding of an orchestra. Parts of it worked better than others.

The orchestra did sound very good, but I admit that they were pretty loud. Maybe mf or mp would've been better. I play the violin hehe

you blame the musicians but what about the conductor? he's conducting a forte-fortissimo, so that's what they played.

It's a fine line. Ultimately, if an orchestra wants to play fortissimo, they're going to do it even if the conductor is showing piano..... Yes he has responsibility here, but it should have been worked out ahead of time. That's what the dress rehearsal is for. I play in a symphony currently and each time we have a soloist or guest, the conductor in rehearsal will start the piece and then move to the audience to check the balance and sound quality which I'm sure they did. If my rinky-dink orchestra knows that, I can't see a professional one not doing it. Even if he was conducting fortissimo, it's the players job to back off of the soloist since it would be a different level fortissimo than the soloists. Sometimes adrenaline gets the best of you and you forget in the heat of the moment. That's what I picture happening here. It's such an iconic song, I feel like I'd want to wail away at it when I got the melody lol

I love the orchestra backing too!! It was so impressive in person. I obviously love the a cappella as well, I'm a professional singer and I can definitely be a purist about it. But this orchestra did amazing and I thought it complemented them well.

I also thought that it added to the "grandeur" at times - from 3:00 to maybe 4:00, in particular - but at other times came a little too close to drowning out their own unique grandeur.

I was there...it was classy but they were not themselves; they hardly moved around. They are better acappella but it was a nice show and the fireworks were spectacular.

Am I the only one who thinks Avi is just taking a long hiatus?? They'll never find someone like him to replace... those 5 people were MEANT to be together. And they obviously can't do it with just 4 people. This is the perfect opportunity (which they have been taking advantage of) for everybody else to explore their solo/duo projects. Ride that wave for a while and when Avi is ready to come back, hop back in but at much slower pace. After all, that was Avi's issue - the group got so big so fast. Obviously this is just my theory bc it's what I wanna believe... I hope I'm not too far off. *sobs*
