This is one of those Pentatonix songs that I listened to at least five times when I first heard it, because I wanted to see what each one of them was doing. You're right, his name is Kevin :) he is incredibly talented. He doesn't sing a lot in their songs because his part to bring the beat is so important but there are a few where he sings, this one and 'Imagine', 'Say Something', and 'Amazing Grace' are a few where he sings.
This song was written by Christian song writer and comedian Mark Lowery. I got to see him perform it live at my cousins church years ago. But nobody does it better than Pentatonix. Such a beautiful song with a beautiful message. Thanks for reacting to it. I really enjoy your channel.

Kevin is the most talented member in my opinion. As you just heard he can sing beautifully, haven’t found a better beatboxer. He can play several instruments and can speak a few languages . Oh, he also has a medical degree .
If you want to feel something, look for last year's live stream version of Silent night. They had one light on and sat the microphones down. It was the most emotional part of the show for me. There is also a live stream version of Mary did you know.
Kevin was raised as a Seventh Day Adventist and Avi is Jewish who was raised to believe in Jesus. They were best friends the six years Avi was with the group. Shared an apt. in L.A. and motel rooms while out touring. They were "more religious" than the rest of the group. More moral in their upbringing. Kevin is a classically trained cellist and has a degree from Yale in Pre-Med. Avi is a Classically/operatically trained basso profundo. Avi helped Kevin with his singing and Kevin taught Avi in percussion and beat boxing sounds. They were like brothers while in the group together.
Interesting that you mention their faith. I noticed a change in the group around the same time Avi left. They seemed to become more worldly and definitely less faith based. I think that's why he left - he refused to be a puppet and play the "game." Just my opinion, anyone is free to disagree.
The first time I heard this song it was being sung by the man who wrote the lyrics, Mark Lowry. It's almost heart stopping when he sings it with The Gaither Vocal Band. The first time I heard this PTX version, it instantly became a favorite, as well. Loved your reaction. Mine was much the same.

The best live version I believe will almost bring you to tears (or in my case sob) is the 2022 Christmas spectacular live stream. I remember listening to this years ago for the first time and having an out of body experience (soul left my body from all the chills).

Kevin is the reason Pentatonix has a special gift of bringing you into the song. He is a Tenor with a high pitch, not the low base associated with Beatboxing. He also plays the Cello and listens to Classical music. He speaks Mandarin fluently because he was planning to go into the medical field in Asia. He graduated from Yale University---Premed when Scott snatched him away. They are all incredible people.
Kevin is a world class cellist who speaks who speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese and composes music, as well as perform, a real Renaissance man.

Kevin doesn't get to sing lead very often. He's usually busy beatboxing. But when there is no beatboxing needed for a song or part of a song, he is almost always singing , filling in a fifth part in the mid-range of the harmonies.
Hi Alex, a second song where Kevin surprised me with his angelic voice is "Amazing Grace". He sang there the last phrase similar to here. One of the best Amazing-Grace-Covers i heard already (the best in my opinion is the metal-cover of Dan Vasc, you already reacted to). Best wishes from germany😉

This song always made me wish we had heard more Scott/Avi duets - their voices blend so well together! And yes - Kevin sings! He has a beautiful tenor voice, and his falsetto is amazing! Because he's usually busy beatboxing, he doesn't have a lot of time for solo singing (although he does it in a few songs), but he sings in harmony in the background more often than you may realize. I usually joke that this is the only PTX song I know of where Kevin has twice as many solo lines as Kirstie does!

Not only is it impossible to not have chills, it's impossible not to cry. The lyrics, location, vocals and harmonies break me every time! THEN I see someone see it for the first time, having my same reaction and I live it all over again. As for Kevin the beatboxer, he can do so much more than beatbox! He's a phenom all his own. The original was written by Mark Lowry and performed by him, Guy Penrod and David Phelps. David Phelps and Mitch Grassi are my two most favorite singers in the entire world. Both tenor singers and have much of the same range. If you wanted to see the original performance I would highly recommend it. It will give you goosebumps also. It's one of the few in which I cannot decide which rendition I prefer the most. Both are spectacular
Great reaction. Thank you. Kevin does not sing lead often because he is the one providing the beats, tempo, etc for most songs. When he is not doing those, he provides harmonies and background vocals to songs when needed. They all just do whatever is needed to make their songs great. They several songs that have 5-part harmony, Kevin sings in those since no beatboxing or other percussion sounds are needed.
It's so rare that Kevin sings it's a shame he doesn't too often but Noone else can do this part for him in the group like Scott can for the bass person (avi/matt) he too important for the songs he the backbone of the group
Yes...Kevin sings! Actually he sings more often than most people know. When he's not actively beatboxing during any song, he's a backing singer, even if it's just for a couple of moments. The camera's not on him as much as the rest of the group, so we don't see him joining in. Have you checked out Making Christmas yet? Or My Favourite Things? Halloween in coming up in the US and Canada, so it's spooky season!!
And added note....they do ALL songs live. Anything that they do in the studio can be done live identically...if not better. Just saying. Bohemian Rhapsody I believe couldn't be performed live by Queen due to the layering or something ( I'm not a musican and don't understand all the terminology. I just live good music) but PTX can perform Bohemian Rhapsody live with no error. I've never seen a group like them. Kevin doesn't sing much because his mouth is busy with drums and cymbals. Also, he never considered himself a singer and didn't exercise his voice so he would have strong carriage and stamina. He always wanted to get in on the good verses of religious songs because he is very dedicated religious so we heard him now and again. Recently he put in some time with a voice coach to develop his best octave and have strength so these days we hear from him more often. Now we can add singer to the long list of talents Kevin is brilliant at. As for the question being asked; Of course she knew. An angel came and told her it would be.
