Pentax 17 First Impressions and Sample Images

I've had the Pentax 17 for two days now (June 27, 2024), and have shot two rolls of film, color and black and white. These are my impressions of the camera so far, including some thoughts on the design and one minor issue I've had using the camera. I also examine Pentax's warning about using filters on the camera, and my experience so far shooting with an ND filter.

Hey Eric. Steve here. You surprise me! I thought they were only taking pre orders and shipping sometime next month! Nice review and yes I want one but not yet. You’re not the only you tuber to point out the annoying led’s. As for the loose battery door screw, yes they will get lost and Ricoh really should offer a fix. That was just simply an oversight.

It’s called Pentax 17 because it’s half frame - (basically) half of 35mm film. 🤗

Why does it sound like your're in a submarine? Good review though, I also agree that the body seemed to be stitched together as an afterthought. Pentax put so much effort into the details, but apparently only into the inner workings of the camera. Outside it seems the money compartment was allowed to do what's possible to built the cheapest case.

Nothing to add to the camera...Coalville isn't that far out of the way. It is on a major route so makes since the camera hang out their for the night.

Try turning unsharp mask off and add sharpness in lightroom. You can control the grain better.

Me too, I only use Lightroom (not classic) I can’t be bothered to learn photoshop or the classic version. I scan using the v550, black and white only. I send colour to the lab. But I find if I add plus 20 in sharpness in Lightroom, a little clarity and a little texture I get a nice balance between grain and sharpness. At least in my opinion but you might find another combination more pleasing 👍🏻

Odd observation. Why does it look like three different textures around the outside of the body?

I think they meant to put leatherette on the back of the camera but for some reason didn't. I'm going on record as predicting that Pentax will send everyone who bought the first edition of the 17 the leatherette pieces for the back. And future editions will ship with covering front and back.

You explained why I don't like this camera to me. It's pretty but it is not well engineered. The battery cover screw, the weird grip, the 5 different textures/finishes, the zone focus, the lack of any manual mode... I know Pentax was working with the bottom of the barrel and no executive support but this is a rough product.

It does seem rushed, as though they were working to an internal deadline and decided to ship a 90% product. It does seem rushed, as though they were working to an internal deadline and decided to ship a 90% product. My guess is that this camera will be improved upon in a future autofocus iteration. I also predict that sometime this summer Ricoh/Pentax will ship out precut leatherette pieces for the back of the camera to everyone who bought this version (and at the same time, the 17 will start shipping with leatherette on the front and rear). I cut some leatherette from a recovering kit that I had and applied it to the back of the 17, and it looks and feels 100% better.

@@campyonlyguygood review and photos. The unsharp mask on the Epson scanner did a very good job imo. I think you’re right about the leatherette. My guess when I first saw reviewers talking about the back of the camera, was that Ricoh is probably going to offer different coloured leatherettes to customize the look of your camera.
