I was lucky enough to be able to purchase this camera without ending up on a backorder list. Here are my initial thoughts about this camera. There's still much to learn about it.

This is the first of several videos that I'm planning for this camera. There are a lot of things to like about this camera, although it is somewhat costly. However, when a digital camera body can cost upward of $3,000, maybe its $500 price isn't terribly high.

To be honest, I had the initial reaction of "wow, I thought this was going to be 200$ max". Then I thought. I thought about how this was built from the ground up. R&D, engineering, plans, design.... I think it's pretty cheap for a camera that will most likely last a long time.

I was surprised that its physical dimensions were very close to the Olympus Pen FT. By the way, the Pen FT weighs 21 ounces (1 pound, 5 ounces) or twice the weight of the Pentax 17.

I received my camera directly from Pentax (I bought the bundle). So far, it seems like a well-built small camera. Like you, I added a lens hood that I purchased, but it blocks too much of my view in the viewfinder. I guess that's my only gripe, I wish Pentax created a customized hood for the camera (but this is a 1st world problem). Happy shooting!

I have a number of 90s-00s point and shoots and I was pleasantly surprised how high quality the 17 feels in comparison. Given that everyone described this as just a toy, it's actually kind of shocking how much better put together it feels as compared to the three 90s Pentax Point and Shoots I own.

I've been thinking of doing some "shoot out" videos to compare different cameras of the same type: 35mm folders, 1970s SLRs, some half-frames, TLRs, etc.

In some ways it is expensive, but remember that Pentax had to design and build this camera from the ground up. They even had to bring in retired engineers to show them how to build the wind-on mechanism. There is a lot of very expensive design and engineering that went into this.
