SDM converted to screw drive seems to be pretty good, it's so much faster than my 50-135 still running the SDM. Should I convert the 50-135?
@vincemokry2380

I'm curious. How do you convert SDM to screw drive? Does it have to be done by a professional?
@snappiness

I just converted my new-to-me 50-135 this week. The sdm was starting to fail so I don't have a comparison to a perfectly good one, but it's way faster now. I went ahead and did my 300 f4 which wasn't dying and it's also faster. So I say go for it.

@@vincemokry2380 No it doesn't have to be done by a pro. @PentaxTips has a great tutorial video on how to do it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GzAucMahZP0.html

I should add though, from what I've read, a good sdm motor vs screwdrive is only a bit faster.

@@snappiness Yeah I've read the same thing, my DA*200 ain't that bad but the 50-135 is super slow! I think I'll give it a whirl to see how it goes!

I don't have the original one but from what I've seen and read, the IQ is fantastic! One thing I love about the original 16-50 is the focal length window. Enjoy the lens man, it's a keeper!

I do not have the old one but recently got the newer one. I grumbled about the cost and the bulk/weight. After seeing the image quality I've decided I will keep! Based upon your shots here, the image quality of the older version (it's not really that old) is comparable to the newer version.
@LeeIveson

@@vincemokry2380 I've seen a comparison somewhere between the two versions, the new one defiantly handles chromatic aberrations better, it also looks to be sharper.

I've had the DA* 16-50mm f2.8 since early 2009, originally used on a K-10. Over that period, I have 9345 shots (that I have kept) and had no issues. Never thought of converting to screw drive as It seems fast enough and the SDM drive has never failed. (unlike my DA* 50-135 and DA* 60-250)
@LeeIveson
@LeeIveson 2 года назад
Plenty of time to put this lens through its paces then! Well I've never used the DA*16-50 with the SDM only in screw drive so I can't make a direct comparison in terms of AF speed. I can only compare to my 50-135 & 200 DA* lenses which both have working SDM, the 50-135 is slow! The 200 is not so bad, I think i have been spoilt with the PLM motor in my 55-300 which is really fast. But if the SDM is fast enough for what you need there's absolutely no reason to change it over to screw drive, the focusing noise does not bother me so I'm ok with it staying screw drive but just out of curiosity I might try converting it back to the SDM as the guy who sold me the 16-50 said it still works?

That are some very good photos! I doubted between the 16-50 and the 50-135 today and went for the latter. I compared flickr photos and the 16-50 photos in flickr were not super inspiring. Good thing I didn't watch this video, very nice images would have made me doubt longer! I do have the 16-85 though, so gives at least f3.5 for some aperture at wide end, and the tele reach to 85 makes for good enough portraits despite smaller aperture.
@LeeIveson
@LeeIveson Год назад
That 16-85 looks nice, I never ended up going for it just because I had the 18-135 at the time.

Have the 16-50, the WS is failing on mine, I can feel it. SDM works fine. Got is second hand ages ago and haven't used it much due to bulkiness. It's sharpness is horrible wide open at 16, gets better from there. It is the one lens that convinced me primes are the best choice in photography. I have the 50-135 and it still works, but I need to train the motor from time to time because it wants to get stuck. So, that's a lens that forces me to use it
@LeeIveson
@LeeIveson Год назад
I'd agree that the 16-50 is soft wide open, nothing like the 50-135 which is much better, at least for the copies I own.

Lee The lens is to close to my Sigma 18-250 3.5 -5.6 HSM the versatile lens surprized me I went for a photo walk to photograph fall foliage and came across a artificial lake full of Egrets. I ended up with great pictures BIF even two fighting a 50 mm lens would not have worked and I couldn't use the 55 - 300 PLM as it is not wide enough for fall foliage

@LeeIveson 2 года назад
Well what I did last time out at the motocross track was have the DA*16-50 on my K-70 & the 55-300 PLM on my K-3. It worked out pretty well, although a little more work in post it's a nice setup that covers a large focal length. I do see the appeal of those sigma super zooms & the Pentax versions too, but WR is a must with the stuff I normally shoot, if they had that then I would consider them 100%.

I converted mine cause in cold weather, the sdm was lazy to start and i missed some shots. Beautiful colors. I don't care about noise. I'm not a wedding photographer, and i'm getting in an age where i have more obituaries than weddings... I made lenses related albums on my flickr leon2201. It might be interesting if people want to see how a smc f 28 , 40 limited, 200, 300, ...performes on a k5iis or k1ii.

Only convert to screw if your SDM has failed. You'll never know when you want the lens to be quieter (weddings or stage shots etc...). The difference speed wise is negligible.
@LeeIveson
@LeeIveson 2 года назад
They can be converted back to SDM if the motor hasn't failed though?
@jaq1967
@jaq1967 2 года назад
@@LeeIveson Sure... But not a straightforward thing. Needs planning. If you've converted to screw and you find yourself at short notice you need the lens for a function that is discreet then you're the one somewhat 'screwed'. Tbf, the only reason you'd want to convert to screw is if your SDM is fucked. You gain very little speedwise I'd doubt you'd really notice. What you do notice is the NOISE. Maybe it's the noise that gives you the idea it's fast? Probably. I've got 3 x DA* lens all with working SDM. I converted one to screw, then converted it back. Speed no difference in my opinion. I prefer the quiet zoom too.
@LeeIveson
@LeeIveson 2 года назад
@@jaq1967 For the stuff I shoot I don't need silent AF especially not when it's that slow, better off just manual focusing! I also have the 50-135 & 200 DA* lenses which are in my opinion much slower to focus than this converted screw drive 16-50. I guess I'll find out if I end up converting them all over to the screw drive.
