This video is kind of a direct response to James (Snappiness) most recent video (link below). I also give my thoughts on what Pentax's next lens should be (or words to that effect).
Enjoy.

This is a great addition to the conversation, and I agree. I love using the older lenses, and I don't shoot paid gigs so the stakes are lower, but certainly for Pentax to keep moving forward modernizing the basic lenses is important. Sort of a different but related conversation that came up on my video is the wildlife/sport people and the limitations of those kinds of lenses in the Pentax system, which is also a real shame. But if you're a small shop what do you decide to focus on and who do you please? Interesting to watch the approach they've taken so far. Like I said for me it doesn't really matter, I can just sit on the sidelines and eat popcorn and shoot my slow lenses and it's fine. But I do feel bad for people who want to shoot Pentax and it's just getting harder and harder to stay in it.

After the announcement of the DFA 21 I was actually OVERJOYED. I thought this was the beginning of a revamp strategy by Pentax of the FA Limited lenses and that we'd now also (soon) get a new DFA 31, DFA43 and DFA77. Optically similar, perhaps slightly larger as they now contain better AF tech and of course weather sealing. But alas... instead the original SMC halted production and the HD Coating (+ round blades) was all the love they got. And it's not that I don't believe Pentax might not ONE DAY actually revamp the three amigos... but it's just that I have been with Pentax long enough to know what it means when they do something like this, it ultimately means it will be a LONG time before they revisit this issue on these particular lenses... (time I don't have). These types of decisions by Pentax actually speaks volumes if you listen properly.

You hit the nail on the head. I’d go a step further and say forget about backwards compatibility- we need newly designed lenses and I feel backwards compatibility limits design on the camera and future lenses.

Great observations. The FA Limited trio has attracted praise. Pentax has a huge back catalogue of lenses that should be reworked to increase their use cases and I don’t know how hard that could be. All Weather or Weather Resistant versions of long-standing models with updated coatings and PLM auto-focus would be a great way to keep the faith. Relaunching classics clad in modernity would be something to buy into. I just got the 14mm and the 12 to 24mm zoom. Both lenses have great potential but need weather-proofing, better coatings and silent focus motors built in. I wonder how difficult it is in reality, to reimagine the mechanics and electronics for us. I am writing this in January 2024.

Well, I think Autofocus has been Pentax's Achilles heal for quite some time now, and what people do not realise or give enough credit to the process of AF is the glass itself. Pentax bodies could have the best AF possible, but putting SDM, screw drive or DC glass on the end is shooting itself in the foot. Even my Fuji lenses vary massively in terms of AF performance depending which lens I have mounted on the same body. AF always will be the sum of all its parts. So right now Pentax feels a little lack luster in taking this seriously. There are just two PLM lenses in their entire catalog. If ever there was a need for a modern lens makeover for Pentax it would be the FA trio, they are renowned all over the photographic community, they are excellent lenses but as is will never give the user a 2023/24 AF experience regardless of body attached to.

I agree that many of their older lenses would certainly improve if they went to PLM. Weather proofing would be a bonus but not a deal breaker in my opinion.

I just find it bizarre that for the company that everyone seems to respect for weather sealing and durability, there are a surprising amount of lenses NOT weather sealed. For example, for the APS-C Pentax system there is only ONE prime that is weather sealed (the DA* 55/1.4). Ten primes exist for that system and only 1/10 are weather sealed. :S

Agree: PLM or end of it. It really is last burden from the past that cripples Pentax performance.

Interesting take. I shoot Fujifilm also, as well as Pentax. But I'm not a pro, so the shooting experience is a critical component to my enjoyment of photography, and in that sense I enjoy shooting with the (ha!) FA Limiteds more than I enjoy shooting the lovely lenses I have for my X-T4. Even though, as you say, it's vastly easier to nail the focus with the Fujifilm lenses. And there's just something about the rending of the Limiteds combined with the K-1 sensor that I just can't get from my Fuji system. Very soon, I plan on adding the new DFA21 to my kit, and I look forward to shooting the the 21, 31, 43 and 77 for the foreseeable future. Screw-drive and all, LOL! Thanks for the video, keep up the good work.

Thanks for taking the time to comment and yes I really can understand that mentality. I feel Fuji is for 'work' where I need to deliver results and the experience for shooting takes a back seat. When I get to shoot at a slower pace with less pressure I love to reach for the OVF (K-1/645D). The DFA21 is the only lens Pentax has released recently that has genuinely excited me! Do stay in touch, would love to hear your thoughts on it when the day arrives and that you have one. Pentax were supposed to send me a review unit but a stuff up in the ordering meant that never happened :''(

I shoot Fuji as well (E-3, T-2) and love their B&W rendering. I mostly use my Pentax manual lenses as the focus peaking really breaths life back into these old lenses in a way Pentax digital cameras don't, at least not without split screen.....unfortunately not all Pentax digital bodies have a split screen option. Can't find one for my KP. :(

I hear those baked-in Pentax shooters that say they can nail anything with any Pentax camera or lens, it is technique that matters. Yes, I agree to a point. Now I shoot K3ii for paid work, like studi and weddings. I can nail much more with K5ii now and even K-r. Also I had a retired wedding photographer friend helping me with one wedding this year, and he had Pentax in his hands for the first time. Before he was Nikon shooter all his career. Well, almost all his photos were properly focused and K5ii in his hand surpassed my yield with K3ii regarding AF. He had some troubles elsewhere using camera and settings, but AF did work for him. So Pentax can provide results. But it is so much easier to get the results if AF is more reliable. I realised that when I had opportunity to test DFA*70-200 on my K5ii in really low light against my Tamron 70-200 - revolution in focusing and reliability and repetitive results. Even tracking on K5ii became usable. I was stunned. In same venue I testd that against Nikon D810 and that camera not even want to fire without AF beam. With Tamron I could nail people, but with Pentax lens I could do it recklessly, faster and more brain could be dedicated to artistic aspects of photography. Another exaple was testing K1 when it came out against my K5ii. Unfortunately I used my Tamron 70-200 for the comparison. I was just terrified how bad K1 performed. It should be at least slightly better than K5ii, but it was same. AF had exactly the same characteristics. Even image when used in crop mode had same characteristic in IQ. OK, for sensor part, both are same generation and technology, so K1 anf K5/ii/s feel very similar (almost same) other than size. K1 advantage come only if good FF lens are used, but Tamron 70-200 is not good lens in this regard and camera performance, so even for IQ both were similar, even worse if edges are thought. But AUTOFOCUS -> it was limited by lens, not camera!! Years later I bought MZ50 film camera and ws amazed how well that Tamron works with 1991 camera with SAFOX IV AF. I'm back to zero with demand that Pentax do update all they have with modern AF ... at least their best lenses. Another proof that K5ii AF is already good (I can't say for older cameras since only one i have is K-r and it is low level camera) is catch-in-focus. I can focus moving subject at f1.4 with M-50, no problem. It's lenses, I am convinced that needs update. Final proof are modern DA screw lenses vs older one. DA35AL vs FA35-80 ... the "modern" DA35 is accurate but slow and work non-reliable in low light. While FA35-80 is astonishing fast to focus and work much better in bad light (like forest), but often oscillate since screw steps are to coarse. Solution is to quickly change zoom a bit or step back / furward a bit. Trade off. Modern PLM can't have this issues.
@SummersSnaps

"But AUTOFOCUS -> it was limited by lens, not camera!!" Yep, and that's all this video was about and how my love of certain lenses on the K-1 (FA Ltds) are still left behind since 1990 tech. That's quite astonishing to me when you think of things like that, these lenses have been in production for 30yrs and in that time only some rounded blades and HD coating came to them last year... So for me I think my romance with Pentax is kinda faltering because whatever new full frame system they will bring out in the near future will be somewhat nerfed with using those gorgeous lenses. I would have to consider DFA21, DFA50 and DFA85 as options that have had the most recent AF updates applied, and I cannot see me really hulking around that kinda weight all day at a wedding :S It feels like Pentax have the optic recipes down pat, just update the DA and FA lenses already and whilst at it give them some WR love!

I'd prefer a 150-600mm to compete with other brands and as there's now no option above 450mm apart from using a teleconverter or a third party lens. The Bigma i's a good lens but nowhere near as good as the 60-600 on a D500 or D850. The range of third party lenses over 500mm for other brands leaves Pentax at a disadvantage. A fixed aperture 55-300 f4 could cover the shorter distances.

I remember saying this when I first picked up my DA*50-135, for all its great rendering & weather sealing the slow SDM focusing motor is a massive reason why I don't use that lens for any of my action sports stuff & why I've been saying for ages that it would be my 1 stop lens IF it had the PLM motor in it. I think when I asked this question before "why don't they put the PLM into the DA* lenses or LTD's" you said that PLM didn't have enough torque to drive a large aperture lens like f2.8, things might have changed in their designs since they brought out the 16-50 2.8 PLM so what's to stop them now? They seem hell bent on pissing everyone around to the point we all consider other options. #PentaxMarketing101 FML
@lt1caprice57l
@lt1caprice57l Год назад
If I'm not mistaken, the 16-50 was re-engineered so that all focusing is achieved by moving a single element, which means that while the lens itself is big and heavy, what's handled by the PLM is not. That might not be possible with the 50-135, who knows? What I do know is you don't need PLM for speed. My 16-85's DC is lightning quick, not quite as much so as my 55-300 PLM but leaps and bounds quicker than anything else Pentax has ever done, including screw drive.

6:57 - any professional shooter need to know few things be fore he trust a brand: 1) this model is not last! I would be able to upgrade when time will come (to replace used gear or to catch competition). If this is not the case, I would not invest in glass. 2) lens lineup that I need and also vision that there are / will be lenses to which I can upgrade when I need (replace or upgrade). Lenses have to be competitive by main meaning of purpose. Tilt/Shift lens need to be sharp, "sport" lens also need to be fast in focus, etc. 3) broad ecosystem and is a niche brand, so I know I will be able to sell my old gear simply and good, not to lost all on it, also to be able to buy someone's else used gear if I want to, and also have broad third party accessories support (that works). 4) having repair / store near or in same country at least, to get fast turnaround when something goes wrong or rent ability. 5) all that considering still remaining at prices that return investment ... ... for hobby user all this is irrelevant, I guess. But those users really are not bread and butter of any brand.

@SummersSnaps
@SummersSnaps Год назад
Well it's as DPReview said, its essentially a change of production line issues for the K-70, so new screen, a couple of Custom Image profiles tossed in (that you can get anyway with f/w updates on the other cameras, perhaps these custom image profiles will work on all lenses however and not just the select few that they currently have been doing)... They prolly should have just named it K-70ii, like a f/w + small hardware change/upgrade rather than confuse everyone with 'KF' (that makes it sound new and unique and thus sporting new features/upgrades).

@KobieMC Год назад
I agree, but let's go even deeper hehe... One thing they could do is simplify the lens lineup. Take their sales figures of the most popular screw drive prime lenses per fixed focal length and revamp those lenses with PLM. Basically, if the 31 doesn't sell as much as the 35, then turf the 31 and make the 35 PLM and so on. For telephoto, even if they made a 400 F/6.3 or a 500 F/8, people would buy it compared to the 150-450 due to size weight and price. At the end of the day, (back to reality now) I think the smartest move they could make is to just end screw drive and SDM. Just focus on revamped lenses for DC and PLM motors. Pentax seems to rest a bit too much on its Laurel's which unfortunately has tanked companies throughout history. Some of those companies were absolute leaders in their field too (Blackberry, Nortel, Nokia, Kyocera etc). Technology advances and to stay relevant, you need to advance with it or die. It's really that simple.

Ring ultrasonic motors.. not PLM. You want torque and speed. Not just to play with small glass elements. 400/6.3 or 500/8 will be a good idea..but for Canon, Nikon and Sony. Much better than Canon 600/11 and 800/11.. make 400/8, 600/8, 800/8 instead and sell many. That is aperture still perfectly usable for daylight landscape/wildlife/planes/birds etc. For Pentax I would prefer to have 150-600/4-6.3 or 60-600, because there is no customer base to buy so many telephoto lenses and pay for development cost. But I have to stick with Sigma 100-300/4(+TC) and 50-500/4-6.3...
@KobieMC
@KobieMC Год назад
@@xmeda If Pentax could get SDM (Ring Ultrasonic Motors) right then I would agree. But they did figure out how to have a heavy large glass wide aperture zoom with PLM (16-50 PLM). It's just the focus element that needs to be light, everything else can be heavy glass.
@stevenjohnson4283
@stevenjohnson4283 Год назад
I don't get this, Pentax has * glass in those focal lengths in the DFA* 50mm 1.4 and DFA* 85mm 1.4 and I think the 85mm has the ring motor. The 50mm is made with Tokina because its also the Tokina Opera.......... They're weather sealed and apparently better AF. So I don't understand the assertion in this video that Pentax moves at a snails pace because the 43mm and 77mm limited lenses aren't PLM. Yet the pro users were complaining there was no 50mm 1.4 or modern 85mm 1.4 pro level lenses, but they've been out for a while now. I think the 50mm 1.4 is 4 to 5 years old, and the 85mm 1.4 is close to 2 years old if memory serves me right With the money you've spent on an XT4 and lenses you probably could have bought the DFA* 50mm and 85mm. But who goes from full frame to shooting apsc fujifilm. But I know, its a thing now. 5 to 10 years ago it was Full Frame, buy a Full Frame its better than apsc blah blah blah. Now everyone wants to downsize to an oversized apsc Fuji. My Pentax K-3 is still smaller than an XH1, XT4, XH2. Now I watch Matt Osborne who shoots Leica M manual focusing and SL auto focusing cameras. He shoot manual all the time by himself doing portrait work. You don't hear him complaining about shooting manual primes on M cameras. I see later on in the video you mention the DFA* 50mm and 85mm existence and how they're stellar lenses, but its a huge contradiction. And this is the culture of the Photography industry, it is filled with irrational contradictions based more on wants than on anything else.
@SummersSnaps
@SummersSnaps Год назад
Hi Steven and thanks for commenting. It is hard to put into a 9min video all of the reasons and thought processes going on. Allow me to expand further. There are no contradictions here, I simply mention the connection between manufacturers releasing new camera bodies with new tech but being nerfed from that experience with using inferior and outdated lenses. We've seen a fast pace of improvements within the MILC world and 5-10yr old Fuji lenses (for example) being retired as the new versions enter the market to match better with the newfound tech in the new bodies. The XF33/1.4 LM WR and the XF23/1.4 LM WR for example replace their older versions and the PERFORMANCE difference is actually very significant. With Pentax their fastest AF lens tech (that rivals MILC speeds) are PLM lenses, but to have only 2 lenses to date and only for APS-C really disappoints. Now my personal preference is the Limited lenses because they tick so many boxes (for me). Small, light, compact, excellent IQ etc etc. Of course these are not clinical or reference lenses, they have problems such as CA, distortion, edge and corner performance wide open, but the trade offs are acceptable to many of us. The biggest problem is screw drive and lack of WR which started to really hurt my event and wedding work when using such tools. When the DFA50 and 85 came out I was definitely glad to see such glass, but... they are VERY different beasts from the FA Limited's and that cost of perfection comes at a price, not just to the wallet but also in size and weight. Despite Pentax having such amazing ergonomics, weight fatigue is a very real thing, it hurts to shoot Pentax for a full days wedding, more so when the very next day you have to do it all over again. In my heart I knew I could not really entertain using such lenses, they are better suited to studio work (and I'm not getting any younger!). There's more to this of course, as other independent reviewers have stated, the only thing 'wrong' with the DFA50 and DFA85 is what they are attached to, incredible optics stuck on 2016 tech (and 2016 Pentax tech which was a fair bit behind its DSLR competitors at the time of release!). With the K-1 limited to a burst of 13-18 shots at 4.4fps, with the addition of the mirror making some of these shots slightly front or back focused, add to this the weight of the pairing and lack of a complete DFA prime outfit (no DFA24, 35, 135 etc)... and the fact that the (K-1) shutter still makes a very audible sound (so one could argue silent AF for Pentax is null void)... and the complaint list starts to grow and logic dictates to (begrudgingly) start looking around at other alternatives. I decided that for all the benefits of the DFA50 and DFA85 had to offer, it would be a frustrating shooting experience and really the perks of those optics are held for shooting wide open yet the keeper rate would be quite low when using a Pentax DSLR. Happier times would be had shooting such thin DoF with MILC systems where better focusing aids existed along with no more slightly oof shots (due to the omission of the mirror). And lastly I did not touch upon video, but PLM seems to be the only tech Pentax has yet for AF.C in video. As I looked at my goals I decided video was moving up on my list of needs and the entire industry seems to feel the same, being able to offer video work for clients is becoming more and more in demand. But really the point here was Pentax's pace, and that with the announcement of such minor upgrades to lenses I hold dear sent a crushing message to this tog. I needed to stop waiting for Pentax to make what I want. These types of small 'upgrades' that Pentax makes to their catalog are frustrating and act as band aids to a larger problem (production time). Look at the K-1ii Limited's, silly grips and hotshoes in (some) revolting colour schemes, wasting time when really its an entire new camera we should be wanting, they do this to 'fill the time' between genuine releases but these releases are 5-8yrs apart and sometimes with very little genuine improvements! So it's hard for me to get excited about an imaginary forthcoming Pentax K-1iii, it could do 10fps, buffer of 50, as light as a K3iii with genuine improved AF, but if the options that await for me are still the ancient glass that currently exists then its largely upgrades all for nothing. The glass needs dragged into 2022 as well. I know that changing DA and FA Limited lenses to PLM would come at a cost, additional size and bulk, but add weather sealing and I am sure they would sell like hot cakes. Pentax makes some very slow prime lenses for APS-C that are not weather sealed, crazy for a company that prides themselves on rugged weather sealed bodies. All I really would like is for Pentax to acknowledge that its not enough to have a lens road map, but also it needs a lens upgrade map as well. Silence speaks volumes and even worse... silly upgrades. FWIW I could not have bought a DFA85 and DFA50 for the price of the XT4, not even close. Here in Australia Pentax pricing is bonanza. My XT4 cost me (new) $1990AUD, the DFA85 is $3199 and the DFA50 $2179. My entire Fuji kit (XT4, XT30II, 16/1.4, 32/1.8, 50/2 and 90/2) cost less than those two lenses... madness. pentax.com.au/_lens-sensor-size/full-frame-lenses I apologize if my video rubbed you up the wrong way, its not a Pentax bashing video, it is me trying to say that what would be a beacon of light would for Pentax to announce more PLM glass forthcoming, because that would let me know that Pentax are SERIOUS about the future, about producing a system that genuinely keeps up with advancing tech whilst not offering a tv to stare down through the eye piece.

Thank you for that thoughts Eddy - My two cents. Why PLM? You need torque for bigger glas - sorry the 55-300 is a toy lens compared to the serious lenses like the current 50 or 85 from the construction side. Also never heard of any SDM problems with the 85 and 50. So coming to Pentax and what they should do and what not - Looking at the market I doubt they are gaining new customers at the moment. All what is produced is gear for the existing and constantly shrinking user base. Taking this in account it makes no sense to upgrade the current lenses - e.g. the limited lenses to WR and SDM or PLM motors. Just a few die hards, who shoot landscapes with the ltd. lenses would upgrade their glas to the new version. So it makes absolutely no sense to do that and throw a lot of money on R&D to develop such lenses. Also the landscapers mostly don't care about the special characteristics of that vintage lenses, as they mostly come to the table when shooting closer stuff. So these guys are mostly happy with the 15-30 which is WR. So we will see "current" tech just in new arrivals where the chances are high to sell some barrels. It would also be interesting to know how many 21 ltd. lenses went over the counter. Looking at the communities I see just a hand full of active user shooting them. We all love Pentax in some way - some more some less - but I think people should stop to hope to see something BIG coming from them. Maybe they'll surprise us with a new K3 III with sone nerdy but cool features, but I doubt it will happen - and if, for a competitive price. That they will fill the gaps in their lens-lineup with modern constructions in foreseeable time will not happen.

If they can PLM a 16-50 zoom, I think they could PLM some tiny DA and FA Ltds, even if the optical recipe differs slightly, chuck in some WR and you have at least an existing fanbase upgrading glass (in the same manner Fujinarians constantly upgrade their old glass for the new replacement one, something that is going to complement the newer body release and maximise AF potential bla bla). A new FF body with a slight boost in AF speed, accuracy, more WR/PLM lenses, enhanced fps, deeper buffer and it might be enough to satisfy current fans as well cement their position to being a decent MILC alternative. K3III is ok, but it is APS-C. To add similar specs in a K-1iii with new lenses that support the improvements to he body are in my eyes the only way forward for the company, otherwise what is the point? They might as well fold now. Reference lenses like the DFA50 and DFA85 will never be PLM due to their mass and weight, but not every lens produced by Pentax needs to be so clinically perfect. 'Not measurable by numbers', I'm sure the FA Ltds fall into that category (they'd score poorly today, but they are small, dinky and full of optical strong traits despite their flaws). Take this concept but modernize it (and maybe accept a small increase in bulk as a consequence), I am sure if done properly they would be attractive to the current user base. Like all things however, price will be a factor.

I know many people were kinda disheartened when the “new” FA limiteds only upgrade was the coating. I personally would have added a few to my bag if they updated the WR and AF. The lighter form is really appealing but I guess we just have to see what Pentax decides to do

@@dneira29 Hopefully the DFA21 signals a revamp of that entire range, perhaps even running along side the originals (if they sell well then I see no reason to cease product on the original design). If Pentax can give us DFA31 Ltd, DFA43 Ltd and a DFA77 Ltd with some better AF and weather sealing, albeit slightly larger and with an optical recipe that differs but certainly leans in the direction of the OG's, then I think many would welcome that line.

All the DA* lenses need a revamp. It would be nice if all of them could get a PLM motor, but as long as they get a new faster focusing & more reliable AF motor than what they currently have, I'll be happy with that. I don't care if it's DC, new SDM, PLM, or whatever as long as the lens focuses faster & the AF motor doesn't give up the ghost in a few years. They also need to add a longer DA* zoom lens to their lineup. Something like a DA* 200-600mm DC/SDM/PLM.
@SummersSnaps

100% and with that revamp we NEED weather sealing. It is actually bonkers that the brand most known for rugged weather sealing protection actually has such few lenses (primes especially which you would think would be fairly simple!) with weather sealing!

It doesn't *have* to be PLM. My 16-85's DC motor is very fast - not quite PLM fast, but leaps and bounds faster than anything else Pentax has done. But actually, on my 55-300, when beyond 200, the speed of the PLM drops considerably - it also has a nasty habit of turning the focus mechanism the wrong way, then coming back, which obviously adds a considerable amount of focusing time. The 16-85 doesn't do this.
@SummersSnaps
@SummersSnaps Год назад
Yes DC might be acceptable in a lot of instances where PLM is unpractical. FWIW I have not noticed my 55-300PLM do this 🤷

@@SummersSnaps well hells bells, maybe I have a defective one. And I just realized I don't have to push the button to retract it, only to release it from being retracted...🤔🤔🤔🤔 Optically it is excellent though.

@@lt1caprice57l Maybes, I do hear however that the plastic nature of this lens means the performance can worsen over time, things... 'move' with that plastic nature through wear and tear and changes in temperature (important here for us Aussies as we can shift 20 degrees centigrade daily in the summer and winter months within a 12hr time frame!)

Agree. DA18-135WR with DC motor is also very fast. But even many body-driven lenses are fast. My Sigma 100-300/4 on K3 is reliable fast autofocusing combination. The camera AF performance is affecting it in many cases, not the motor. Then I have old Pentax SMC-F 35-80mm F4-5.6 and F 28-80mm F3.5-4.5 that are bot extremely fast focusing lenses, because those were produced in SFX/SF7 era and those cameras have very slow motor. But on any modern body these just go nuts.

6:05 - it seem Pentax really has timing issue. Not like Japan trains, Pentax is always at the wrong station; once too early (1st FF digital, 1st this and that) or too late; transition to digital, transition to MILC, fast AF lens. I really am confident that all "Pentax can't focus" came from lens exclusively. Only than, when someone has HDFA*85 and they push it, other shortcomings slowly poor in. Like AF point too big. But that is few duded out there that are so far into system. 90% would never came so far and would praise fast AF and Pentax as system as ALL lenses for the last 10 years would have focus like DFA*70-200, HDFA*50/85, ... or even plain Tamron's FA15-30. They just ruined reputation! Old users that came from 1 AF poit SAFOX or 3 AF points SAFOX IV film cameras surely feel overwhelmed by 11 AF points on K5ii (which is really OK AF for it's time and even today if paired with capable lens) and their beloved old lenses that they know in and out + they are old fashioned how they shoot, too. Those users are devoted from film era. Pentax attracted them in 60'es when they were kids that saw The Beatles used Pentax. That reputation worn out. Pentax ruined reputation for young people that were raised in digital world. No fresh income into system since they left for other brands that had plenty of offerings. Expecting millenial would learn film technique is optimistic, since other brands spoiled them with easier systems. Now it is too late I believe. Even if sultan of Brunei offer them 10% of his wealth they would need 10 years to rebuild reputation and build trust and gear lineup that could be complete and meaningful. Until than people would adapt those "pixie dust" lenses to other systems. They will buying them 2nd hand ... no new income for Pentax either.

PLM is just system that is able to move small element. Nothing magical. Pentax needs to use proper ring ultrasonic motors on all hi-end lenses. Their DFA70-200/2.8 was best candidate for such system, but they instead used just obsolete motors while even very old and cheap Sigma 70-200/2.8 HSMII has fast ring ultrasonic motor (!) Fullframe in Pentax makes little sense. There are too many missing lenses in FF portfolio, that it is not even partially competitive to any other FF system around. You want ultrawide lens? No. Just old Sigma 12-24. You want 20/1.4, 24/1.4, 28/1.4, 35/1.4? Haha no! Just very old Sigma 20/1.8, 24/1.8, maybe old FA*24/2 and then Sigma 28/1.8, FA31/1.8Ltd maybe or weak FA35/2 with ugly hexagonal bokeg or Sigma 35/1.4. Their 15-30/2.8 and 24-70/2.8 are just rebranded Tamrons but with significantly higher price and no stabiliser. 70-210/4 again one overpriced Tamron. You want something longer than 450mm? Heh.. no. Dig some old Bigma on 2nd hand market. And I can continue with this for ages. Pentax FF is just a very niche toy for owners of old film era lenses who want to play with them. It makes zero sense otherwise. Competitors are way ahead and even systems that emerged recently (Canon R and Nikon Z) are already more covered by lenses. Any additional investments in FF system on K mount are just throwing money into black hole. Pentax 645 line is probably dead for good. Nothing new introduced for over 6 years. That is considerd proper death in digital camera world. Just the still overpriced 645Z on market being butchered by Fuji medium format options. APS-C is the only part they managed to somehow keep in bussiness and they should focus on it. Do not bother with beating dead horse (FF) and do something that has potential to improve customer base. And it is also time to re-think the OVF stance and prepare some usable modern ILC APS-C camera with new mount + functional AF adaptor for all K mount lenses. The other option is to be removed from market completely and soon.

Pentax definitely need to upgrade their lens lineup especially if they plan to release another full frame camera. The K3-iii would have sold more units if they had a range of new lenses to support the body. Fast focusing lenses with modern motor technology would have been an advantage when the camera was reviewed as the range of PLM lenses

I don’t think Pentax will have a future if they just continue making DSLR cameras and lenses. They could come out with ONE 36mpx mirrorless Pentax with a really good adapter, a 24-70 2.8, and like a 50mm. Prioritize weather sealing, ergonomics, and image quality above everything. Wish they would rerelease a 645 body with huge updates in the areas that need to be updated. The cameras are legendary, the quality is good, and people know Pentax for medium format.

Pentax released K-3 Mk III - action oriented flagship, pro, level camera. More then a year ago. Till now there is not even single pro level lens that will take advantage of new AF. 16-50, now matter how good it is is hardly action lens and 55-300 is consumer level lens with all pros and cons co ming with it. You can get really good APSC camera and best you can pair with it is either slow and prone to failure 60-250 or fast but not really good 55-300. Is there even a reason to get K-3 Mk III if you want to shot action? I would not hold my breath waiting for new lenses that are able to follow body tech. When we get them it will be time to realese K-3 Mk IV and those lenses will most likely be behind new tech anyway. No matter how I like Pentax and DSLR experience I think that Pentax is brand for masochists.

"Is there even a reason to get K-3 Mk III if you want to shot action?" I came to a similar conclusion and I will say this. IF your genre is outdoor, IF you are shooting with plenty of light, then actually the K3III+55-300PLM is a wicked combo. As you know I have a XT4 and I decided to just grab this newish XC50-230 OIS MkII lens that Fuji produce to see how well it performed (it is a fairly budget lens). Optically I think it was quite great and the OIS paired with the XT4 OIS was great, but I was really taken aback at how SLOW it was to focus, going from near to infinity was ZZZzzz... Now I can't comment if this is the experience of Fuji in general with zooms, I have not tried their other more premium glass like the 70-300 or the 100-400, but if it's a similar experience then all that tracking and stuff is really being nerfed from the focusing speed. (fwiw I have not found the focus speed to be really lacking in their primes). My point is... don't underestimate a DSLR+PLM, it is lightning fast, going from near to far instantly, and if the entire DSLR experience was like this then it could really rival MILC tech in terms of AF acquisition etc etc. Maybe it lacks the tracking and snazzy eye detection, but snappy AF with a AF point can be all a lot of us need. So right now I see the K3III as being a decent OVF+ zoom lenses + favourable light kit. 11-18*, 16-50*PLM and 55-300PLM would actually be a fantastic kit (I could see this keeping up with Fuji for being a competitive alternative). But indeed we need more, we need (as Snappiness says) a 50-135/2.8 PLM to round that out and a 100-450 or something, DC driven or PLM. Then we need the primes revamped and FF glass and... and... urgh... "I think that Pentax is brand for masochists." LOL

I have silve K-3 Mk III and I like it. I hardly underestimate it, I think as action camera It is great. It is just that Pentax lacks a complete package. I mean it has great 11-18 for wide and astro photography, just as good 16-50 as Al around pro zoom and... nothing to supplement the main genre this camera was supposedly made for. I shot airplanes and 60-250 is plenty good as those are not too zippy and even SDM is able to keep focus, but I can hardly imagine this lens keeping up indoor games or something like this. 55-300 was kinda quirky for my airplane shots that is why I replaced it with 60-250 but it may have worked for closer targets.
