The Pentax 67 back in the 80s and 90s was the camera of choice for a lot of great fashion photographers, Sante D’Orazio shot all of his Victoria’s Secret catalog work on the Pentax 67. Bruce Weber Mario Testino all of the greats use the Pentax 67.They are awesome cameras, I know I bought two of them in 1990 and have them to this day, I’ve did most of my commercial work on the paint at 67. They even made a Polaroid back for the camera to take your test shots with, which I loved. Great episode keep up the good work.

Good job on this. I always wondered why I never had a connection to my modern digital cameras until I got a rolleiflex and now I'm shooting a Mamiya 645. Yeah man it's more than just taking great photos it's the feeling sound and experience of a camera that makes you want to use it

I’ve had my Pentax for a while and I just got my Mamiya today and I’m really enjoying it! I’ll definitely have to use the Mamiya more but I love the rotating back. I’m will be keeping both cameras as I love my Pentax too much to sell it.

I hate to say it being a mamiya shooter, yes the pentax lenses are faster and sleeker. And don't suffer from balsam separation as much for some reason. But the mamiya lenses have a *french insert phrase* to them, that something that can't be articulated. They also appear sharper than the pentax 105mm and the 90mm 2.8 which is the competition to the sekor c 90mm 3.8 and the 127. I love using the mamiya so much, the huge finder, the sound of the shutter, the feeling of holding a big black box that creates images..

Good video on both cameras. I grew up when those film cameras came out, the Mamiya 67 was known for it large negative and good photos more of a studio camera. The Pentax an oversize like 35mm. Like you I own and use the Mamiya 645 Pro with light meter penta-prism cause its lighter and 15 photos on 120 film. The only negative is no film swapping mid-roll like on the Mamiya 67. Really like the portraits you took on the Mamiya 67 in the video. At this time as I am transitioning from film more to digital mirrorless where camera Olympus and Sony where I can still use some of my film lenses into the future.

If I shot in the studio it would be the Mamiya. I have a 1933 Thornton Pickard Ruby 6x9 which the Mamiya was based on. Rotating back but with a focal plane shutter 1 to 1000 and a 135mm f4. 5 Taylor Taylor Hobson Cooke lens. A beast but mostly wood so quite light compared to the very heavy Mamiya. My carry camera is a Pentax 6x7 with a 55mm f4 wide angle lens which I use most of the time. I also shoot with a Moskva 4 folding 6x9 rangefinder camera with a 110 4.5 lens. It gets the most comments when I am out shooting because it looks awesome.

I too have both. I cannot decide on one over the other. Each has it's own ups and downs where they each excel and excel differently. But I am just getting back into the photography again after being into a digital mode. It's much like comparing the sound of a CD as compared to some old vinyl. There is nothing like a great 33 1/3 platter or film compared to digital. Especially with the medium formats and the really great affordable lenses.

Good to know that the mamiya rb67 is a good inexpensive camera. I have always wanted a hasselblad camera but dang that price! My 120mm cameras so far are an old holga and a super old lubitel 166.Edit I do have a old Kodak starflex Brownie that has not been used. Still had the user manual tied to the strap I picked up at a garage sale not far from your OG house.

I've got a Yashica Mat 124G and the RB67. Having only used the RB a couple of times so far, I'm thinking the Yashica would be the go to set up for street and family stuff. It's like holding a m43 camera compared to the RB, haha. Both are excellent cameras, though.

Also a motor drive film magazine is good, it saves on the 'double action' cock and film wind. Just cock the shutter and the film winds automatically.

@@HayesPeterson I've got two . They're not much heavier than the manual backs and make the camera much easier and nicer to use, so long as you have 4 AA batteries. The left hand, 'multi angle grip' is also worth getting. For handheld and walkabouts, I use a prism finder, a motor magazine, and the grip. It's very heavy, but you get used to it. The picture quality's worth the effort. As for lenses, my favourite is the 50mm wide. Razor sharp and fun. Really well priced on Ebay

There's a regular flash pc sync socket on every Mamiya lens. The shutter is in the lens.

Sorry if someone else has asked and you've answered… I'm very interested int he Pentax 67 (late) version. My concern is flash… I haven't seen much about it at high speeds with that camera. I shoot mostly natural light for now, but I want to work my way into using flash with this format. It seems that the Mamiya can use high speed sync and Pentax cannot?
@HayesPeterson
@HayesPeterson 5 лет назад
takoboi Hi! So because the RB is a leaf shutter it can sync with flash at all speeds. The Pentax is curtain shutter and cannot sync at all speeds. I haven’t tested the max sync speed but I would start at 1/60 and try 1/125 as well. I also plan on doing a shoot with the Pentax and flash soon so if you don’t want to test that yourself subscribe and you’ll see it in a few weeks. 😉
@fangxusun1723
@fangxusun1723 5 лет назад
The flash synch speed of pentax is 1/30, yeah, you heard me right, it's pretty much useless. Mamiya can sych any speed up to 1/400.
