People have all kinds of rising expenses to deal with right now. Higher food prices, higher rent / mortgage payments, inflation eating away at monthly budgets. But as if that wasn't bad enough, local cities, towns and governments are also scrambling to squeeze people now too. In the form of extreme water bills, unpaid traffic tickets from years ago, whatever they can do to squeeze you from every angle.

I had a water leak and my bill was high, but only 100. Turn off all the water like irrigation, don't flush toilets etc. Then go watch you water meter and see if it is counting up, watch it for a minute or two. That will tell you if its leaking. Looking back at the billing history may also give a clue when it started.

The CA DMV didn't get my change of address and charged me for my RV. I sent letters to the tax board but never heard anything, 2 years later they reached into my checking account in another state and took the money. I just let it go but they did the same thing the next year. I then wrote to the CA DMV and they checked and gave me a refund, they were pretty cool about it in my case. I came legally to the US with my family two years ago. I have a job where I make 55k / year, and live in a suburb of DFW (Texas). Until now, we could afford renting, but now we are being kicked out and our rent might go up over 100%, making it so that we cannot afford housing anymore. With three kids, we might have to downsize to a two bedroom to barely make it. We are Christians and trust that God is our provider, he has never left us homeless, and will not do it now. Thankfully I should be advancing in my career and make a little bit of money every year, but inflation is so high that it seems worthless. Anyway, for those Christian friends out there, he is faithful. These times are when we really need to hold to him

A city i used to live in had water bills that high. They undervalued the high end houses ($2-20M) because the rich people that run the city decided the tax bills would "drive out wealth". But then they were short on funds so they jacked up the water rates. They charged working class people a fortune so they could undervalue the houses of the rich.

Do the crime, pay the fine. If any state becomes more efficient in collecting monies owed to it, like this example, then they are becoming more efficient which is what private enterprise preaches. Amen. This example is not a good one. Anyone who ignores a ticket based upon supposed conversations with lawyers can expect to pay the piper at some point. Instead of whining and blaming everyone but himself. To me, it seems the State is getting its act together - collecting what is due. YEARS ago in Costa Rica I was asked to pay a ticket before leaving the Country - I was impressed they had the ability to get it before I left and wondered when the U.S of A would catch up. Here we go. Only fair to the law abiding citizens who pay their fines. Don't defend the guy who tries to duck a fine.

Why are people squeezed this way ??? - Property taxes: Never heard of California's "Proposition 13" ? This was a proposition approved in 1978. It meant that property taxes weren't able to rise by more than 2% per year. But this meant that the state of CA saw the gap between tax revenues and their costs widen (more and more). When the state wants to build or expand a road then the state has to buy the land to be able to construct/expand that road. But land prices went through the roof while tax revenues rose at a much much slower pace. So, CA has to resort to other fees, levies, surcharges etc. etc. to make up for the shortfall of tax revenues. - Proposition 13 was (heavily) pushed by (wealthy ??) home owners who didn't want to see their property taxes go up at the same pace as their the value of their houses/homes. What do you mean by "Free Markets" ? This is home owners rigging the markets in their favour. - Some 10 years ago I heard the words "Capitalism is Socialism for the rich". Then I thought that the person who said this was a out of his mind. But when I learned about "Propposition 13" then I realized that these words hold more truths than I previously thought. - CA also got hurt by Trump's "tax cuts" in 2018 (???). Complicated story. But the bottom line is that state and local taxes are no longer deductable from federal taxes and that meant a higher tax burden for tax payers in CA. - Water bills: You may NOT like this but the reality is that several US states are about to face "water shortages" and then I mean "FRESH water shortages" and that also includes Florida. - E.g. One reason why meat prices have gone through the roof in the last say 20 years is that there is a reduced amount of rain in western parts of the US.
