For them, they might as well have left Ross 128 a year ago, or a day ago, or two minutes ago (though how long or short their lives might be, and what their processing clock speed is for perceived rate time flow in a non-accelerated frame, are another matter entirely). The aliens would have no a priori reason to believe that the humans on Earth were dead, only the assumption that the status quo holds and humans remain alive (though with the signal lasting precisely 1 day, it's safe to assume that they've received and correctly interpreted our radio waves, hence could guess that we'd be alive). The mapping signal though, that had to have been from a ship far closer than Ross 128, since it was standard electromagnetic (assuming no wormholes in the process, since none were alluded to).
