More than forty years ago, a small group of Oregon teenagers with developmental disabilities helped launch a global self-advocacy movement. Together they formed the organization People First, drawing over 500 attendees to the group’s inaugural meeting.
That 1974 conference is generally thought to be the beginning of the developmental disabilities self-advocacy movement. Today, People First is an international organization dedicated to supporting all people with disabilities in over 40 countries.
In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), OPB is joining with other public media partners around the country to promote inclusion for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. The “Move To Include” initiative highlights the unique and diverse stories of people with disabilities. These stories and additional resources are available to teachers, families, and students through the PBS LearningMedia collection.
Move To Include is sponsored locally by Relay Resources.

My mom was a laundry worker at Fairview , I used to hangout there as a kid while she worked . I remember a parade everyone did for I think Halloween or something and one of the guys there with Downs syndrome was a gorrila in a cage .....He took that role seriously and scared the crap out of me as he thrashed about LOL 😂 I always liked the folks with disabilities there's no reason to not face our issues we have or name them ....such is life, it makes us who we are.

Love this. But the lack of financial supports on the outside is criminal.

My 1st 6 weeks of life on this planet were at the Fairview home. My mother was put there because they thought she was promiscuous. She told me many horror stories before she died of how they would punish people there.
