Hi there,
Welcome to The Happy Chicken Coop RU-vid Channel.
Today we are talking about....the use of chicken diapers and hens in the home.
As the world continues to change so do the amount of people that get chickens. And sometimes that means people take the meaning of a pet to a whole different level.
That's right, keeping chickens in the home using chicken diapers!
I'm not knocking this, to each their own, but I imagine having a chicken walking around with a new diaper every day can be a pain.
Similar to having something that poops just as much if not more than a baby and changing it's chicken diaper at the end of every day.
If this is you, you are better than I am! Enjoy the video!

I considered making my lavender orpington a house hen. She does not fit in with the flock and is picked on constantly. When she got sick and I had her inside, I really really thought about it. She is so sweet, just wants lap snuggles and to bury her head in my elbow all the time, if it's allowed. Ultimately I decided to put her back outside because she missed doing all the regular chicken things too. Instead, I picked up a bunch more orpingtons, so she has an army now.

My wife keeps threatening to bring her favorite hen in the house. She loves that dang thing. Don’t think she ACTUALLY will though.

Speaking as someone who has kept diapered chickens for over 10 years I'm wondering where you got the idea for daily bathing from. A little trim job (just a couple scissor snips after a molt, practically nothing) and changing them often enough means at worse you might have to do a wet wipe when they had a particularly nasty cecal. It takes so long for feathers to dry and effective bathing strips oils enough that water bathing of any kind is best avoided. I do it monthly if my hen needs it. With the diaper off overnight she usually doesn't! Preening time is cleaning time, she takes care of any untidyness. Daily bathing would be untenable but it simply isn't a part of house chicken husbandry. You can always tell when someone has actually kept them and when someone hasn't just based on how complicated they're under the impression it must be. It is extra silly when directly compared to keeping chickens outdoors. I'm disabled with poor mobility and still find the actual practice of keeping my gal effortless. She gets fed and watered once a day, and changed a few times as part of other daily routines, and all the rest is spending time together happily. Raising chickens outdoors is something I can't do anymore though- too many factors to cause injury and disease even in a large enclosed run, too much hauling feed (and water during freezes,) cleaning the coop and run is so much harder than just dealing with a diaper, monitoring the flock is far more difficult, and the horror stories I have of things happening to my birds despite my best efforts for their health and safety, from coop break ins/attacks by humans to lightning striking the run to extreme weather conditions like floods and tornadoes... yeah. It's a bit 6 of one half dozen of the other at best. I'll take my easy-going, spoiled house hen any day. Speaking from direct experience she's easier to keep happy than an outdoor chicken just based on her environment being more controlled! But it certainly isn't for everyone. House chickens are dusty, creating allergens, changing them is still gross and not for those who can'tstand mess (granted if you hate mess maybe don't keep any bird at all,) they fling food everywhere, you will find feathers in the oddest places, and you have to basically toddler proof everywhere they are allowed to be because they WILL peck an electrical socket or get trapped in a cabinet or knock over something precious. A robot vacuum of all things has been one of the best investments I've made in chicken keeping

Wow, very interesting story! Thank you for sharing. I had no idea what it would be like. Of course it is a newer lifestyle it seems so I imagine, most people, myself included couldn't imagine basically living with an animal that isn't easy to 100% tame. For example, because I've trained my dog she lets me know when it's time to go to the bathroom. Whereas I would find it difficult, if at all possible to teach a chicken to hold it. On top of that, a chicken doesn't have a sphincter, so if you don't have a diaper on her, it's whenever nature calls. But from what it sounds like, you're saying she doesn't relieve herself after a certain time of day and kind of knows when to? Also, I imagine though if you have a few diapered at a time it can get hectic. Where does she lay her eggs for you?

If you've ever had one of those large Conjure birds that are really noisy as a pet, then a chicken is much easier. Also, you get breakfast, eggs! They're quiet, they just hang out with the dogs inside and they snuggle and sit with me when I have my coffee. They actually purrr when happy. I have lined diapers That you just rinse off with the bidet in the toliet, easy. They go outside during the day in a steele run and then come in at night to sleep. You don't need to bathe them daily because the Diaper is a pouch and the poop doesn't get near their vent usually. I use Avian Fashions diapers. They're no different than one of the dogs in our house. Everyone gets a long great. I have six dogs in the house. A pyrenee's, malamute shepherd mix two chows and two chihuahuas. They are the best pets ever! I like knowing they're safe and secure inside. They sleep in an old 7 foot tall ferret cage that I gutted and put a bar in the center. I leave the door open, but that's where they roost at night. Their diapers are off at night. And I have a plastic pan at the bottom that I just take out and rinse off. I put down a pee pad on top of it and usually just throw that away daily. They'll stay in their cage quiet all night long. As soon as I get up. I put their diapers back on and put them on a dog gate that my husband built to block off the kitchen and front of our house. They like to sleep in more in the mornings. LOL They don't get as much sun as chickens outside but mine still lay almost daily right now. My jersey giant lays every other day and my Australorp lays most every day even now in December. I have just enough eggs for me and my husband.

There's a video around here with a hen that's house trained. In the morning she is let out, like a dog and the size of the drop is ... huge.

A...pet...chicken? IN the house? That would be a pretty fast way to a fresh can getting opened around my place...chicks go in the brooder in the garage as babies, the first and last time they ever see the house is after processing day...

Not my cup of tea ... no judge. But when do we draw the line? All that poop I would think their feathers would be too messy... who has the time to care for all that hygiene, I barely have time to paint my nails!
